What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm watch went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Bismarck, ND wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm watch went out at Dec 25, 12:16 AM CST, 3 hours 7 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Dec 25, 12:16 AM CST, 3 hours 7 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Bismarck ND
1216 AM CST Sat Dec 25 2021

.UPDATE...
Issued at 1212 AM CST Sat Dec 25 2021

Previous update increased pops based on webcams and radar and this
still looks good. After a quick look at some of the models, it
looks like maybe a shift farther south, especially compared to
last night at this time. Updated pops through midday based on a
blend of recent guidance. This does not change any thinking as far
as the advisory is concerned, that looks good. Will update text
products shortly.

UPDATE Issued at 902 PM CST Fri Dec 24 2021

Upon further consideration with a continued increase in snow
intensity on webcams and radar, as well as a reduction of
visibility at nearby observation sites, decided to start the
Winter Weather Advisory early/now for southwestern North dakota.

UPDATE Issued at 809 PM CST Fri Dec 24 2021

Returns on the Bowman radar have been steadily increasing while
becoming more organized over the past couple hours. Meanwhile, the
NDDOT webcam near Marmarth has begun to show light snow falling
along the margins of these increased returns. With that, added
PoPs to southwestern ND a couple hours earlier and increased PoPs
over the next few hours. As expected, temperatures have begun to
tank, especially over the northern half of the forecast area.
Below zero readings are already being had in portions of northern
North Dakota.

UPDATE Issued at 558 PM CST Fri Dec 24 2021

Calm winds and mostly clear skies are present north and east river.
However, a deck of low/mid clouds persists over southwestern
North Dakota. Increasing cloudiness is to be expected for the rest
of the area through the overnight hours as the winter storm
system nudges into the region tonight. Presently, light snow is
being observed over portions of southeastern Montana with light
returns (not reaching the ground) being observed via the Bowman
radar over southwestern North Dakota. Light snow should begin to
creep into southwestern North Dakota over the next few hours.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday)
Issued at 254 PM CST Fri Dec 24 2021

The main concern for the short term period is accumulating snow
across southwest and south central North Dakota tonight through
Christmas Day. Very cold wind chills are also expected across
northern North Dakota tonight through Christmas morning.

A cold front that moved through the state earlier today has caused
temperatures to remain nearly steady or fall since early this
morning, with a blustery northwest wind and patchy blowing snow from
the Devils Lake Basin into the northern James River Valley. Winds
will gradually diminish through the evening as a surface ridge
extending south and east of high pressure over Alberta reaches into
North Dakota. This could allow temperatures to plummet across
northern North Dakota overnight, where cloud cover will not be as
extensive as farther south. Wind chills could approach 30 below
zero, which has prompted the issuance of a Wind Chill Advisory for
areas along and north of Highway 2, lasting from this evening
through Christmas morning.

A shortwave trough will get catapulted out of the base of an upper
low off the Pacific Northwest coast this evening and quickly reach
the Northern Plains by midday Christmas. Downstream forcing from
isentropic ascent, mid level frontogenesis, and low level warm air
advection will commence over southwest North Dakota late tonight,
but precipitation onset may be delayed until stronger support from
aloft arrives early Christmas morning, including strong mid level
DCVA/PVA and Q-vector convergence. The strong warm air advection
will also push mid level lapse rates into the 7 to 8 C/km range,
setting the stage for a potential mesoscale banding event, oriented
from west to east.

As is the case with most banding events, confidence on the location
of highest snow amounts is low to medium at best, even at this
shorter time range. The forecast track of the synoptic scale
features also carries some uncertainty, although 12Z guidance has
shown some consolidation between Interstate 94 and the South Dakota
border, which matches the run-to-run consistency of the ECMWF
ensemble. Even though mesoscale dynamics will be in play, the
synoptic scale forcing by itself, along with forecast snow ratios
closer to the 15:1 to 20:1 range, should result in widespread
accumulations around 3 to 5 inches across much of southwest and
south central North Dakota, with slightly lower confidence on the
western extent. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for areas
along and south of Interstate 94 from late tonight through Christmas
afternoon. HREF maximum snow accumulation suggests a localized high
end potential of up to 8 inches should mesoscale banding materialize.

Cold temperatures will prevail on Christmas Day, with highs ranging
from around zero along the Canadian border to near 20 in far
southwest North Dakota. Winds will be around 10 mph from the east to
northeast. A continued agitated/cyclonic flow aloft could bring
lighter snow to the rest of western and central North Dakota
throughout the day.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday)
Issued at 254 PM CST Fri Dec 24 2021

Highlights for the long term period include high probabilities for
accumulating snow Sunday into Monday, lower probabilities for
accumulating snow on Tuesday, and dangerously cold temperatures and
wind chills focused on Tuesday night through Thursday morning.

A potent shortwave is forecast to eject off the central Rockies on
Sunday. A broad expanse of warm air advection and isentropic ascent
will be induced over the Northern Plains as early as Sunday morning.
Precipitation may develop this early, but more likely will be
delayed until the stronger upper level support arrives by Sunday
evening. Recent deterministic guidance has alleviated the concern of
the potential loss of ice aloft, but some patchy freezing drizzle
cannot be completely ruled out. The heaviest snow is favored Sunday
night with the passage of the mid level vorticity maxima. The
potential for mesoscale banding does not appear to be present at
this time, but the strong dynamics in play along with a deep DGZ
could produce several inches of snow, with increasing values likely
from southwest to northeast. Breezy conditions may accompany this
system, which could result in some low-impact blowing and drifting
snow. Slightly warmer, but still below average temperatures are
expected on Sunday.

Bitterly cold Arctic air will be dragged into western North Dakota
on the backside of the departing trough. This will mark the
beginning of a prolonged period of very cold temperatures and
dangerous wind chills that is expected to last through Thursday
morning. There are some indications in long range ensembles that the
cold may not be quite as intense as previously thought, which makes
sense given another chance of accumulating snow from a quick moving
shortwave on Tuesday. Confidence is also increasing that the Arctic
air may depart at least the southern half of the region on Thursday.
Prior to that though, guidance remains centered on Tuesday night
through Wednesday night as the coldest period of time as the heart
of the Arctic high pressure crosses the Northern Plains. Highs below
zero are likely on Wednesday, any may struggle to climb above 10
below across the north. Overnight lows may approach 30 below Tuesday
and Wednesday night. Minimum wind chills from Tuesday night through
Thursday morning are forecast to approach life threatening values of
50 below in northwest North Dakota, with widespread 30s and 40s
below elsewhere.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday night)
Issued at 1212 AM CST Sat Dec 25 2021

All sites begin with VFR ceilings and visibilities before an
ongoing winter weather system works further north and east through
the night. This system will bring moderate snowfall to the southern
TAF sites with lesser amounts further north. As the system moves in,
a reduction to MVFR ceilings is expected at all TAF sites, as well
as IFR/LIFR visibilities while snow is falling. Easterly winds will
be light, thus blowing snow won't be an issue.
