What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind chill advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Bismarck, ND wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind chill advisory went out at Dec 25, 12:55 PM CST, 1 hour 11 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Dec 25, 12:55 PM CST, 1 hour 11 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Bismarck ND
1255 PM CST Sat Dec 25 2021

.UPDATE...
Issued at 1247 PM CST Sat Dec 25 2021

Snow continues to diminish from southwest to northeast. Any
additional accumulations will generally be in the trace to one
inch range with some slightly higher amounts possible across
portions of Sheridan, Wells, Foster, Stutsman, Kidder, and
Burleigh counties. The forecast looks to be in good shape. Other
than tweaking precipitation chances, just blended in the latest
observations to the forecast.

UPDATE Issued at 853 AM CST Sat Dec 25 2021

The forecast is evolving as expected. Up to 2.6 inches of snow
here at the airport thus far with one more push of light to
moderate snow that should come through. All in all, there was just
enough cushion last night for Santa's sleigh to operate smoothly. Still
think there will be some 4 to 6 inch totals at least across the
far south central and southeast closer to the South Dakota border.
Went ahead and cancelled the Wind Chill Advisory across the north
as values have improved and should continue to improve. All other
headlines look to be in good shape.

UPDATE Issued at 647 AM CST Sat Dec 25 2021

No significant changes with this update. Just under 2 inches at
Bismarck (1.9) through 6 AM. Made some minor updates to pops based
on latest radar and short term models.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 329 AM CST Sat Dec 25 2021

Currently, snow was indicated over far southwest ND, with light snow
extending north to around Interstate 94 (light snow has recently
begun at Beach and Dickinson). Higher reflectivities aloft area
extending into south central ND, but a drier northerly flow has kept
ceilings in the 7-10k-ft range as of yet. Latest Satellite imagery
shows a nice baroclinic leaf structure over the eastern High Plains
into the western Dakotas, and racing quickly east. Latest mesoscale
models depict radar reflectivities tracking east across the current
advisory area. At this time the see no reason to adjust the advisory
area. Based on latest NBM guidance the area of 3-5 inches of snow
has shifted only slightly south, but not nearly far enough to remove
any counties from the Advisory. Latest radar shows radar returns
(more cellular in nature) developing along the ND/SD border over
south central ND due to the FG forcing congruent with higher lapse
rates. As the synoptic scale forcing catches up with this later this
morning, think there may still be an area of enhanced snowfall rates
from far south cental ND into the southern James River valley.
Latest HREF depict this area with a good probability of over 4" of
snow. SREF probabilities of DGZ >100mb are also high over this same
area. A limiting factor may be the overall speed of the system, but
it's possible that a portion of the Advisory (most likely along and
south of I-94 and east of the Missouri) may need to be upgraded to a
warning.

There is a secondary wave that lifts from eastern MT into western ND
this afternoon, bringing some light snow o the northwest and
possibly the north central portion of the state.

Temperatures remain cold today with highs around zero north to the
teens far southwest. Any lingering light snow should taper off early
this evening with overnight lows tonight around zero southwest, to
10 to 15 below zero along the Canadian border.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)
Issued at 329 AM CST Sat Dec 25 2021

A second round of snow Sunday through Monday and continued very cold
temperatures highlight the long term forecast period.

After a quick break Christmas night, another wave rotates through
the mean western trough and across the Northern Plains Sunday night
through Monday. A broad area of warm advection and isentropic ascent
will develop as early as Sunday morning over southwest ND and
spread north and east through the day, with the mid level
shortwave lifting through Sunday afternoon/evening, and perhaps a
trailing mid-level wave moving through late Sunday night. The
potential for banded precipitation does not look as high with this
system, but it will be a more dynamic wave, with the potential
for some higher snowfall rates given that at least a portion of
the time the entire column from the surface to around 700mb will
be within the DGZ. Deterministic and ensemble guidance indicate
the higher probabilities for Warning criteria snowfall will be
over eastern ND. However, there is enough of a signal for heavier
snowfall rates back into central ND to include eastern portions of
the CWA in a Winter Storm Watch for Sunday into Monday. Winds
with this system will be stronger than Today's with a brisk
easterly flow Sunday transitioning to a Northwest flow Sunday
night onto Monday producing some area of mainly low-impact blowing
and drifting snow. The snow we receive today will also be
available to blow around. the strongest winds appear to be over
the western portion of the state Monday, which is likely the area
to see the least amount of snow. But with the snow today, and the
impacts from dangerous wind chills, which we haven't even covered
yet, will issue a SPS for the rest of the CWA that is not within
the Winter Storm Watch.

The northerly winds behind the exiting system Monday will usher in
the bitterly cold Arctic air that will remain over the forecast area
through much of next week. Expect to be sick of Wind Chill
Advisories and possible warnings by New Years!

There is another wave that moves through the area during the Monday
night-Tuesday timeframe that will bring another round of snow to the
area. At this time it looks like southern and eastern portions of
the forecast area will be favored for light snowfall amounts with
this system.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon)
Issued at 1247 PM CST Sat Dec 25 2021

Light snow will continue to diminish from the southwest to
northeast through the rest of the afternoon. Brief IFR
visibilities will be possible under any heavier areas of snow,
but most will remain in MVFR categories. MVFR ceilings are likely
to persist across much of western and central North Dakota through
the period, possibly lifting briefly to VFR categories tonight
ahead of the next system that will approach from the southwest on
Sunday. This system will bring more MVFR and IFR ceilings towards
the end of the period as well as some gustier winds.
