.SYNOPSIS...
A disorganized storm system will move northeast from the Gulf
of Mexico to the east coast through Friday. While precipitation
has been scant over most of the area today, light snow will
become more common overnight, with about 2 to 4 inches of
accumulation expected over parts of the Southern Tier and into
Northeastern Pennsylvania through Friday. Lake effect snow will
start late Friday and continue into Saturday. Lake effect snow
bands will be focused on areas north of the Finger Lakes and
west of Syracuse, where 4 to 8 inches of snowfall are possible.
Scattered snow showers and squalls are likely elsewhere across
the region Friday Night into Saturday, with a few inches of snow
possible, mainly north of the Pennsylvania border.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
225 PM update...
Quick update for on-going trends. Main snow band stayed just
south of the area, now we're in a bit of a lull due to mid-level
dry slotting between weak upper level disturbances.
Frontogenesis band has been trying to get going straddling the
NY/PA border and into the Catskills, but it has been battling
the drier air aloft even as surface dewpoint depressions have
narrowed. Outside of this band, some patchy freezing drizzle
has also been reported, due to the lack of ice crystals in the
dry slot. With the dry slot expected to diminish early this
evening ahead of the next disturbance rippling up from the
southwest, expect the risk of freezing drizzle to diminish a few
hours from now.

As mentioned yesterday, if the Wed Night/Thu AM snow failed to
come through in the Southern Tier, we'd be hanging our hats on
additional snow banding expected to develop tonight into Friday.
Confidence is increasing for that scenario, even though the
total snow amounts of 2 to 4 (locally 5) inches are a bit
underwhelming for Advisory criteria. The impacts aren't that
much different one side of criteria or the other, and dropping
the advisory before anticipated snowfall develops would be
unwise. So, while the lack of snow today is far from ideal,
we'll let it ride. Will push out some updated text in the WSW
here shortly followed by short term update and LES/snow shower
potential for late Fri into Sat.

5 AM update...
Pushed north and increased snow pops for the next couple hours.
Increased qpf and snowfall to account for the accumulating snow
further north. There will be a pause this morning then this
afternoon snow will increase and push further north.

3 AM update...

Snow has moved in and has already made it to the southern tier
of CNY and the office. will need to speed up the timing. The
general theme has not changed and left the winter weather
advisories in the same area of NEPA and south central NY for
today into Friday. 24 to 36 hour light to at times moderate snow
event for the entire CWA. Amounts in the advisory of 3 to 7
inches and 1 to 3 outside the advisory in CNY. Snowfall amounts
lowered slightly which has been the trend. Snow to liquid
ratios of 10 to 15 to 1. Decent dendrite zone between 10 and 15k
feet in the saturated air. It ratios and dendrite zone lower
some Friday morning with the approach of the coastal low and
warmer air.

A deep southwest flow is bringing moisture into the area well
ahead of a weak surface low. The low moves from the Gulf to be
off of Long Island Friday. An upper level trough moves in Friday
kicking out the coastal low but bringing colder air in. The
upper level jet is just to the northwest of us today then moves
slowly east. The snow comes in several batches with one this
morning into the afternoon in the Poconos to southern Catskills
with isentropic lift across the advisory area. Tonight weak
waves move through with some moderate snow. Friday a frontal
boundary moves east through ahead of the upper level trough.
Sinking air behind this will diminish the snow in the afternoon.

Temperatures typical for February. Highs today 25 to 30. Lows
tonight 18 to 23. highs Friday 30 to 35. East winds 5 to 10 mph
today and tonight shift west Friday afternoon. Not much wind to
blow around the snow.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
The upper level low which brings snow to the region moves
eastward by Friday night. However, northwest flow still persists
on the backside of the departing low. This will lead to a round
of lake effect snow showers which lasts into Saturday night.
Deep moisture appears to be lacking but some slight instability
looks to be present as well. Leaned a bit on the typical
reliable RGEM model for QPF ands resultant snow accumulations.
Snowfall ratios should be around 20:1 enough to result in a few
inches where the bulk of the snow showers fall. Right now the
Syracuse area or just a bit south of there looks favored for
that at this time. Temperatures Friday night should fall back to
around 20 and only rise several degrees Saturday with cold air
advection. Bufkit soundings during the day show the potential
for some 20 mph or slightly higher gusts making it to the
surface as well.

Winds then shift to northerly Saturday night
into Sunday with more scattered and lighter snow showers
spreading into the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier. Saturday
night looks like the coldest night especially where some
clearing can occur with lows near 10.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure starts to build eastward into the region Sunday.
However, Bufkit analysis here shows a fairly low deck of
clouds. Still some sun should peak out toward sunset. This looks
like the first day of several where our blended model guidance
may be too cool with high temperatures given model bias in
recent week. As a result, most locations have a good shot to hit
freezing Sunday.

Another cold frontal boundary looks to move through on Monday.
One low pressure system is modeled to track into the Great lakes
with another one forming southeast of our region. This puts our
region in a QPF minimum ahead of the front. Still enough lift
and moisture look present for a period of light snow changing
to rain given high temperatures warming above freezing. That is
thanks to the southerly flow ahead of the cold front.

Snow showers linger with potential lake moisture involved Monday
evening before another system brings additional chances for rain
and snow showers Tuesday and perhaps Wednesday. Highs look to
warm a bit each day getting into the 40's Tuesday and Wednesday
for quite a few locations. Same with the low temperatures
warming a bit each night as well.

.AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A bit of a lull in the snow activity early this afternoon has
brought higher visbys than previously expected. This is
expected to be short-lived as more snow gradually spreads across
the area later this afternoon and especially tonight. As a
result, IFR visbys from light to moderate snow is eventually
expected at all terminals by this evening. Ceilings will be
mainly Fuel Alternate with possibly some IFR ceilings Friday
morning. The visby restrictions are expected to last most of the
night before slow improvement is expected Friday morning at the
majority of terminals.

Outlook...

Friday night through Saturday night...Restrictions in CNY due
to lake effect snow showers. Mainly VFR at AVP.

Sunday through Sunday evening...Mainly VFR

Sunday overnight through Tuesday...A couple of systems will
likely bring light snow and associated restrictions.
