Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front lifting north this evening brings some light snow
over Central NY and mixed precipitation to NE PA through the
overnight hours. Precipitation ends tomorrow morning with a
brief break in the weather. A more potent system may bring
widespread accumulating snowfall and mixed precipitation to the
area Monday through Tuesday morning.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
3 PM Update...

Weak warm air advection precipitation will move into the region
later this afternoon/early this evening. Very little moisture
is associated with only a few hundredths of an inch of QPF
expected through Sunday morning. However, forecast soundings
continue to show the possibility of freezing drizzle mixing with
light snow or snow grains (Snizzle) overnight tonight. How far
north freezing drizzle will be able to spread is still
uncertain, but most likely area to see a light glaze icing will
across NE PA. Confidence in this forecast is too low for a
winter weather advisory and decided to take a wait and see
approach before issuing a headline due to the uncertainty. Will
mention the possibility of FZDZ and a light glaze of ice
overnight in the HWO for now, and if confidence increases later,
a short fuse advisory can always be hoisted tonight if needed.

CNY and further north to near the NY Thruway looks more like
cloud ice will be present, with thermal profiles saturated to
about -10C, so light snow is most likely there with snowfall
accumulations of an inch or less possible.

The atmosphere dries out quick Sunday morning with precipitation
coming to an end. However, flow turns to the NW later in the
afternoon and the CAA over Lake Ontario will keep clouds
around and possible bring a few lake effect snow showers into CNY
as well.

Finally, flow will turn back to the SW Sunday night, bringing an
end to any lake effect activity. Another wave starts to push in
from the SW early Monday morning. There are currently some
timing differences between the models on when precip arrives
into our western zone, with most of the guidance keeping it out
of the area until afternoon 12Z Monday. For now, due to some
uncertainty, have introduced just low chance PoP across our
western zones early Monday.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
A very active pattern will affect the Northeast U.S. during the
short term period.

A diffuse wave moving through the Mid-Atlantic will spread light
snow across NY and PA Sunday night into Monday before the upper
atmospheric flow ushers the storm out to sea.

A much stronger storm will follow on its heels. This storm will
intensify over GA Monday night and spin into the Mid-Atlantic
Tuesday morning. This storm will spread significant snow into
the NY and PA, with the potential for mixed precipitation over
our southeastern counties. Early indications suggest several
inches of snow could fall between Tuesday and Tuesday night.

We will continue to monitor this developing situation.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As the coastal storm exits the region early Wednesday, snow
will taper off and focus downwind of the lakes as northwesterly
winds drag cold air into Upstate NY.

A storm will develop over the SERN U.S. Thursday and intensify
as it moves up the eastern seaboard. This storm will spread snow
into NY and PA beginning Thursday before warmer air above the
surface works into the region and causes snow to mix with sleet,
or possibly freezing rain Thursday night into Friday.

A prolonged period of mixed precipitation is possible, if
current model projections hold true.

.AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Most sites will see VFR conditions through this afternoon, but
there will be a stratus deck that will likely travel through
ELM from 18Z to 20Z and will briefly bring ceilings to MVFR.
Weak system will push through the region tonight through Sunday
morning and bring some light snow and possibly some mixed
precipitation as well. Confidence is low at this time on
precipitation type from the Southern Tier Southward and it is

mostly MVFR, but periods of IFR will certainly be possible,
especially in areas of snow. Confidence of any FZDZ is highest
at AVP with FZDZ possibly mixing in with snow grains at times.
Very little ice accumulation is expected.

Precipitation begins to move out early Sunday morning. Some
light precip may continue into the middle of Sunday morning, but
intensity will be so light that visibility restrictions will be
unlikely, however, there still may be some areas of FZDZ.

Outlook...

Sunday afternoon through Monday... Lake effect snow with
possible restrictions in CNY. VFR for KAVP.

Monday night through Wednesday...IFR restrictions likely with
wintry precipitation/snow. Intensity of the snow will depend on
the exact track of a coastal low pressure system.
