Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Binghamton NY 1242 PM EST Sat Jan 30 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will build into the region for the weekend with continued very cold temperatures. A low pressure system tracks from the Ohio Valley and redevelops along the east coast Monday tracking northeastward on Tuesday. This system has the potential to bring a couple rounds of snowfall to our region through Tuesday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/... 10 AM Update... Though still a cold Arctic day, wind chills are now warmer than 15 degrees below zero and thus the lingering Wind Chill Advisory was dropped ahead of its scheduled 11 AM expiration. Things in the near term are going as planned; however, just giving a heads up that a noteworthy uptick in snow potential has become apparent in many models for the Sunday night through Tuesday system. Expect adjustments to be made today in the forecast for that time period once all incoming models are assessed; mostly to capture probabilities of secondary coastal low to hang tighter to the shore and thus capable of pivoting higher snowfall rates further inland especially Monday night- Tuesday. Previous discussion... A few lake effect snow bands, further enhanced by the Finger Lakes, continue to affect parts of the region, mainly Tompkins, Tioga, Broome, and Cortland Counties. Snowfall rates are fairly light even in the strongest bands, and any snowfall through mid- morning will be a dusting to maybe a half inch. With some drier air aloft moving in today, these bands will slowly diminish in intensity by midday. Surface winds will also back more to the WNW, which may bring some enhanced snow showers into parts of Onondaga County later today, but again, with minimal accumulation. Otherwise, cold temperatures will continue today, though highs will be a few degrees warmer compared to Friday. With clouds expected to break up later this afternoon, especially east of the Finger Lakes, mostly clear skies and light winds tonight will favor stronger radiational cooling, and colder temps. Lows in northern Oneida County could drop below -10, with below-zero temps common east of Interstate 81, especially in colder valleys and hollows in the more hilly terrain. An approaching storm system will bring increasing clouds from southwest to northeast on Sunday, with a slight chance of snow reaching NE PA before evening. && .SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... 10 AM Update... As already noted above, expect upward adjustments to be made today in the snow forecast for this time period once all incoming models are assessed; mostly to capture probabilities of secondary coastal low to hang tighter to the shore and thus capable of pivoting higher snowfall rates further inland especially Monday night-Tuesday. Another low pressure system comes out of the plains to the east coast by Sunday night and forms a secondary low pressure system along the mid-atlantic coast late Sunday through early Tuesday. Model and ensemble waffling continues to be fairly extensive which is typical in miller B setups. For us it is question on how strong the arctic high is to our north that departs Saturday that may limit the northern extent of the low track and precipitation shield. Another issue is with the development of the secondary low. The main issue still present in the modeling is how the secondary low will develop as models are indicating a band of thunderstorms developing just off the mid-atlantic coastline. Some of the modeling is latching on to this causing the secondary low to form further offshore keeping snow chances down. However, there has been a rather large NW shift with the modeling and ensembles on this 00Z cycle 1/30. This is likely because most of the modeling is no longer developing the secondary low with the thunderstorms and is instead tucking it in closer to the coast. This looks like two shots for snow in our region. The first being a period of light snow moving east associated with a dying low pressure system in the Ohio Valley. This wave of snow will be more vulnerable to the arctic high but still has the potential to produce a few inches of snow before it winds down Monday morning. A sharp cutoff will be present for who gets snow. Currently the Southern Tier of NY and NE PA stand the best chance to see this shot of snow. Temperatures generally from around 20 into the low 30's so no mixing concerns. With a reorganization of the storm Monday a notable lull is quite possible during the day with the low pressure system off the NJ coast. However, several snow bands will be moving northwest well inland then pivot eastward as the low departs. Where these setup will be where additional snow accumulates. For now our highest confidence for that is across NE PA into the Western Catskills. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/... Wrap around snow showers, possibly enhanced with a northerly flow off of Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes may linger all the way through Wednesday with temperatures back down in the 10's and 20's. High pressure builds in by Wednesday night. High pressure moves over the area Thursday with winds becoming more southerly starting a warming trend which lasts into Friday. A cold frontal system starts to enter the region Friday. With temperatures warming well into the 30's and possibly 40's a rain/snow mix continues to be forecasted. Freezing rain would be a possibility if the mid levels warm faster than the surface and these temperatures are dependent on that occurs earlier in the week. && .AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... Bands of lake clouds southeast of Ontario remain stretched across much of central NY, leading to MVFR and even fuel alternate ceiling restrictions across most terminals apart from KELM and KAVP this afternoon. Some flurries and light snow may cause a slight drop in visibility at times. As winds gradually shift more to the north and flow turns lighter this evening, lake clouds should gradually break up with a return to VFR at all terminals likely between 23Z and 02Z. High clouds will move into the area tonight ahead of our next system. Outlook... Sunday...Mainly VFR, with gradually lowering ceilings from south to north.
