Ice accumulations up to 1/10 of inch will be possible which will lead to slick roads. Eventually the freezing drizzle will transition to snow this evening, with amounts across the area mostly in the 2 to 6 inch range. The highest totals are expected in parts of northeast Iowa into far southwest and central Wisconsin. The heaviest snow looks to fall this evening, when rates could reach 1 inch per hour at times. Water vapor imagery early this morning shows this weekend's system of
interest spinning off the CA coast with a plume of mid to high level
moisture streaming east from the Rockies into the plains. Meanwhile,
low-level clouds continue to spread east across IA/MN. A few
flurries are possible under the stratus early today.
Otherwise, warm advection continues today and tonight as mid-level
ridging spreads across the area with increasing deep southerly flow.
Despite the cloud cover, seasonable highs in the 20s are expected
today with milder overnight lows in the teens and 20s tonight with
breezy southerly winds ahead of low pressure developing to the
west.

The 29.00z models are in fairly good agreement that the surface
low will track east northeast from southwest Kansas on Saturday
morning to central Indiana by Sunday morning. The upper level low
will track north of this track. In addition, there will be an
inverted trough to the north and northwest of the surface low
which will bring moisture in the region. Strong 850 to 700 mb
frontogenesis will develop across Fayette and Clayton counties in
northeast Iowa and Grant County in southwest Wisconsin from late
Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. This will enhance the lift
located across the counties. As a result, it continues to look
like these counties will see the highest QPF (0.5 to 0.75 inches).
Much of this QPF will likely fall between 5 PM and 11 PM. The
HREF indicates over an 80 percent chance of hourly snowfall
amounts of 1 to 2 inches per hour. This may result in 5 to 7
inches in these counties. Due to this, issued a Winter Storm Watch
from 3 PM Saturday through 12 PM Sunday. Further to the north
toward Interstate 94 snow total will range from 2 to 5 inches. The
highest totals will be in northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin.
Meanwhile, north of Interstate 94, snow totals will range from 1
to 2 inches.
Looking further out, the 29.00z models continue to agreement that
there will be a system impacting the region in the mid to late
part of next week. While this is the case, the ensemble members
are still all over the place with their track, strength, timing,
and precipitation types. As a result, opted to just stay with the
NBM for now.

MVFR ceilings early this afternoon expected to push off to the
north and west giving way to VFR conditions into this evening.
More MVFR/IFR ceilings will push in to RST from the west by the
late evening hours, with an eventual drop to MVFR visibility as
well. Lower ceilings should remain west of the Mississippi River
for much of the TAF period, but do expect LSE to eventually drop
to MVFR at some point Saturday morning. Some guidance hints at
some light freezing drizzle Saturday morning as well, but
confidence is not high in this occurring. Otherwise, winds will be
out of the southeast at around 10 kts through the period, with
gusts in the 20 to 25 kt range starting by late this afternoon at
RST.
