...Wintry Mix Causing Some Slick Roads This Morning...

.A wintry mix continues to shift through the area and roads are
slick and crashes have been reported by the Department of 
Transportation in Minnesota and Iowa. Freezing rain is now 
changing over to sleet and snow in many areas. The precipitation 
will be finished by 10 am in Minnesota and Iowa.

Mainly sleet and snow will fall through early afternoon in

Have extended PoPs for another 4-6 hours this evening given the
current location and trajectories of a pair of shortwaves upstream
over western MN. Snow--albeit light--continues to be reported as
far west as Willmar/Glenwood, MN in conjunction with the second
wave up towards the Red River Valley. The heaviest snow should be
in the next 3-4 hours with very high snow ratios resulting in a
quick inch or more of snow in most locales along a broad swath of
the I-94 corridor. Areas around Rochester reported upwards of
2-3+ inches of snow with this system earlier in the day.

.SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Wednesday)

Still dealing with impact of passing short wave trough this
afternoon, which might be a bit stronger than previously thought.
Surface low as of 20z is is tracking across far southern Minnesota
with area of snow advancing along with it. Lift through dendritic
zone is maximizing this afternoon just ahead of this feature so
quick 1-2 inches of 25:1 snow being observed. And with a stronger
low, seeing tighter pressure gradient and some drifting given how
fluffy snow is. Still expect this to gradually end from west to east
going into the evening as feature moves out.

A bit of a break on Wednesday with short term ridging. Even with
colder airmass should see more sunshine and light winds for a
seasonal day.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday Night through Tuesday)

By Wednesday night, mid level ridge passage will begin shift of
overall flow. Next short wave trough will exit the Plains and as
this approaches, expect low level warm air advection and lift to
help saturate and break out precipitation by Thursday morning. This
is especially true east of the Mississippi River. Bulk of this
should be snow but some temperature profiles could support brief mix
with hints of some melting. In any event, precipitation looks fairly
light. If short duration mixed or freezing precipitation does
materialize, might see some matching brief impacts to travel.

Dive into late week details continues to support growing confidence
for an impactful winter event. Medium range guidance and ensembles
continue to be in good agreement that parts of our service area are
in play for heavy snow potential along with a mixed precipitation
threat.

This potential storm has many classic characteristics, including
coupled jet structure aiding lift, positive tilt with ample
moisture, strong quasi-geostropic forcing signal, strong lift
through the dendritic growth zone, clear deformation zone with
persistent mid-level frontogenetic band, and likely longer
precipitation time. Ensemble data continues to support possible
deformation zone crossing our west and northern counties but some
differences in clusters between model groups. Did notice some
increase in blend of models /NBM/ and tighter snowfall gradient but
still not locked on to one solution.

Warmer air aloft does advect into southern areas ahead of system
which could create more mixed precipitation south of KLSE, including
more liquid closer to KDBQ. Convective threat could produce more
sleet. In addition, possibility of dry slot and loss of ice exists
so plenty of questions regarding location of these threats.

Possibility of headlines could start up next forecast period.

The other weather aspect that has been well advertised is the warm
up behind the early weekend event. As broad upper ridge quickly sets
in across mid CONUS, warm air advection will return quickly. But
this might all be tempered somewhat with a fresh snowpack so have
moderated amount of warmup for time being.

Mainly VFR conditions are forecast for the TAF period as light
snow moves out of the area, but some MVFR ceilings/visibilities
are possible over southeast MN and western Wisconsin towards the
09-15Z timeframe (mainly affecting the RST TAF). Confidence in
this possibility was not high enough to mention in the TAFs at
this time. Light and variable winds now shift to the northwest
overnight, then back to the south Wednesday afternoon.
