Transition to lake enhanced snows continue as deep low pressure
exits into Ontario. Gusty west and southwest winds resulting in
narrow multi-band snow showers, with those gusty winds propelling
them well inland. Not expecting much change for the remainder of
the day, with periods of snow showers continuing...at times
briefly heavy in the snowbelts, with additional accumulations of a
few inches likely by this evening. Gusty winds, often in excess of
25 mph, will result in blowing and drifting snow, only further
exacerbating the hazardous driving conditions. All winter storm
warnings will remain for now...although a transition to advisories
will likely be needed heading into tonight as lake snows
continue. Other story is the cold temperatures, with readings steady
or slowly falling through the teens. Of course, those gusty winds
will make it feel several degrees colder yet, with wind chill
readings dipping into the single digits.

.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

Impactful weather: Accumulating snow and blowing snow. Falling
temperatures through the day.

Pattern synopsis and forecast:

Deep upper troughing engulfs most of the country this morning, while
deep sfc low pressure was moving toward eastern Lake Superior.
Widespread system snow resulting from low level convergence and
still fairly impressive deep layer -divQ continues over nrn Michigan
with strong cold advection now moving into the GTV Bay region. The
pressure gradient was tight, and winds were turning westerly and
gusting up to 35 to 45 mph. Further upstream across the western
provinces, strong sfc high pressure was noted, with much colder and
drier air pushing through the Dakotas/upper midwest.

The synoptic forcing and deep moisture will depart through daybreak,
bringing an end to the system snow. The strong cold advection will
sweep in over all of nrn Michigan, with lake effect snow developing
in the westerly flow regimes as overlake instability increases. The
lake effect snow will persist through tonight, and my be enhanced a
bit by a shortwave that slides into the region today. Westerly winds
will be quite gusty today into tonight, leading to areas of blowing
snow. Inversion heights are not out of this world, reaching 4000-
4500 feet, and will be a limiting factor in how much snow will fall.
1000-850mb winds do remain steady however, which will be in the
favor of decent snow amounts, which look to range from 3 to 7 inches
in the west snowbelts, with little to no snow across much of NE
lower.

After much discussion, all winter headlines will remain intact.
Radar can be monitored to see if the winter storm warning can
continue into tonight, but thoughts are that we could likely
transition to advisories.

Temperatures will fall through the day, down into the teens most
areas, in the lower 20s across parts of eastern upper. Lows tonight
will mostly range from 5F to 12F

.SHORT TERM...(Saturday through Sunday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Ongoing lake effect snow through the
weekend.

Pattern Synopsis:

Broad longwave troughing will encompass most of the Lower 48 on
Saturday as a strong shortwave/jet max pivots off of the New England
coast. At the surface, a cyclone centered over Hudson Bay will
continue to weaken as it becomes more displaced from favorable upper-
level forcing with time. A shortwave embedded in the main trough is
expected to dig into the Midwest and progress over the Great Lakes
Sunday night, providing enough divergence aloft to induce a weak
cyclone along an existing front that looks to trek across the
southern Great Lakes.

Forecast/Details:

Lake enhanced/lake effect snow is expected to be ongoing across NW
lower and eastern upper at the start of the period. Some stronger
organized bands may carry over into the morning, particularly across
the Tip of the Mitt and far northern Chippewa county. However, the
intensity of this snowfall is expected to wane heading into the
afternoon on Saturday as favorable synoptic moisture temporarily
exits the region. Snowfall intensity looks to pick back up Saturday
night into Sunday as the aforementioned shortwave moves overhead. As
the weak cyclone slides south of the region, associated synoptic
moisture will make profiles more favorable for a second round of
more intense snowfall overnight. The main limiting factor for
snowfall amounts Saturday night into Sunday will be the transient
nature of favorable wind direction, forcing, and moisture. That
being said, a few additional inches are possible overnight Saturday
where the heaviest snowfall sets up - most likely across NW lower
and eastern upper. Most of the area is expected to see at least some
snowfall associated with this weak system, but accumulations for
most should stay relatively light. Otherwise, westerly winds will
continue to pour cold air into the region as temperatures will
struggle to get into the teens during the afternoon this weekend.
Wind chills also look to stay below zero through most of the
period.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Thursday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Low for now...Sub-zero wind chills
through most of the week.

Stout longwave troughing is expected to remain in place over much of
the CONUS through the upcoming week as embedded waves rotate through
the main flow at times. Most notably, a shortwave progressing
through the main flow may provide support for a system to track
through the Ohio River Valley Tuesday, bringing more widespread snow
chances to the state. Plenty of uncertainty remains in the track and
intensity of the system, thus keeping confidence low in terms of
impacts that may be seen across northern Michigan. The main story
for this upcoming week remains the bitter cold temperatures and wind
chills that are expected across the area. Afternoon highs in the
single digits will be common, especially across interior locations
of northern lower and eastern upper. Overnight lows will also be
near or below zero. Perhaps most important will be the wind chills
that will struggle to reach above zero throughout the week, even
during the afternoon hours. This will certainly be the coldest air
we've seen across the region so far this winter, and it looks to
stick around for a bit.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon)
Issued at 1235 PM EST Fri Feb 5 2021

Strong cold advection via gusty westerly winds with continue,
resulting in more lake effect snow showers, mainly for the NW
lower airports. CIGS will largely be MVFR, with periods of IFR
CIGS/VSBYS in heavier snow showers and blowing snow. Snow ratios
will be between 16/18:1 and snowfall rates are expected to be
largely less than an inch per hour. Additional snowfall today
through tonight will be on the order of 1 to 4 inches across NW
lower, with the most snow occurring at PLN. APN is only expected
to see a few tenths.

Issued at 347 AM EST Fri Feb 5 2021

Strong low pressure in the region will lift northward and into
Hudson Bay tonight into Saturday. A tight pressure gradient will be
over nrn Michigan and result in widespread westerly gales today into
Saturday morning, with speeds dropping to advisory levels by late
Saturday. Widespread system snow will turn to lake effect through
the day as temperatures plummet and overlake instability grows.
Lake effect is expected to continue into this weekend, being
enhanced by system snow Saturday night into Sunday.
