High pressure centered right across the area this morning, bringing
with it clear skies and a chilly start to the day. Other than a
few lake clouds scraping our coastlines, expect mostly sunny skies
to continue as overhead high only slowly pushes off to the
southeast. This ample sunshine will help temperatures recovery
quickly, with afternoon readings pushing up into the lower 30s for
most areas.

High Impact Weather Potential...None.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Nor'easter continues to churn just off
the New England Coast early this morning...while strong high
pressure now extends from James Bay thru the Western Great Lakes and
into the Mid and Lower Mississippi Valley. Dry northerly flow and
strong subsidence is maintaining mainly clear skies across most of
our CWA. The exception is some lake cloudiness streaming into far NW
Lower Michgian along and west of a line from TVC to CAD. Over-lake
instability will steadily wane early this morning as low levels
begin to warm. Also...land breeze development has begun early this
morning resulting from weak low level winds and cold temps.
Developing offshore flow should tend to push any remaining lake
clouds out of our SW CWA and into Lake Michigan over the next few
hours.

As we head into today...maintenance of strong subsidence and dry air
thru the column will give us one more mostly sunny early February
day across Northern Michigan. High temps this afternoon will warm
into the upper 20s and lower 30s. (Enjoy this wx while you can!)

Mainly high clouds will increase from west to east across our CWA
tonight well in advance of our next low pressure system slated to
provide our next chance of wintry precip and to usher in much colder
air for the weekend. Low level flow will shift to the south behind
the departing surface ridge axis and ahead of this approaching low
pressure system. Still appears deep moisture and thus any associated
precip with this next system will not reach our area until Thursday
afternoon. So...expect continued dry wx for tonight with some
increase in cloud cover. Overnight lows will drop back into the
teens to lower 20s.

.SHORT TERM...(Thursday through Friday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Wintry precipitation...primarily
snow...with gusty winds and falling temperatures.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

Upper level ridge axis will move over the Great Lakes Thursday
morning...but it will be shortlived...as amplified upstream
troughing digs eastward across the central CONUS. This will begin to
spin up an area of surface low pressure over the south central
Plains early Thursday under region of favorable ascent in left exit
region of 300mb jet. Surface low looks to trek northeastward as the
upper level trough begins to lift and become negatively tilted as
it, too, heads northeastward into the Great Lakes. This should serve
to further deepen the surface low as it crosses the region, and as
it continues its trek northeastward into Ontario, cold air will
funnel into the region on the backside of the system on reasonably
strong west to northwesterly flow...signaling a switch to primarily
lake effect snow...which should extend into the long-term portion of
the forecast...if not beyond.

Primary Forecast Concerns: Timing of onset of
precipitation...precipitation type...precipitation amounts...

With surface high pressure to our southeast...and low pressure
developing in the south central Plains...would expect to see warm,
moist, southwesterly flow develop ahead of the surface low and 500mb
trough. Would therefore expect the atmosphere to begin to saturate
through the day Thursday (if we don't already start off the day with
some mid-high clouds). Guidance does seem to have slowed things down
a tad since yesterday...perhaps by about 6hrs, give or take...with
precipitation looking to start more towards afternoon (from west to
east) into the evening, which will still mean some impacts for the
evening commute Thursday...and certainly for the Friday morning
commute. Additionally...looks like the bulk of the synoptic
precipitation will be Thursday evening into Friday morning as
surface low deepens, therefore intensifying lifting of warm moist
air over the region...and lending to increased potential for higher
precip totals.

Attm, looks as though mid level air will be starting the big
cooldown as the best mid-level moisture arrives into the
region...which will hopefully help mitigate some of the p-type
issues...though there could still be some early on...especially
toward the east side of the state and near the coasts. Snow to
liquid ratios look to be on the low side initially...so a wetter
snow and/or fine snow (given thermal profile looking somewhat
favorable for snowflake growth by riming Thursday evening/night) is
possible...which could also add to travel impacts as it could be a
"greasy" type snow. (As sometimes higher moisture content synoptic
snow can be...) Will continue to message potential for roads to
become slick as snow falls...in addition to falling temps into
Friday.

There are still a few differences in model guidance...though they
all suggest the surface low will move nearly overhead or just to our
northwest overnight Thursday, with winds shifting to the
west/northwest on the backside of the low, and CAA firmly in place.
Will have to still monitor for potential of flash freeze
situation...as more aggressive solution currently drops surface
temps from freezing around 6z into teens across the southwest CWA by
12z. Additionally...either way...once temps start falling, it
currently looks like they won't stop for too much until they bottom
out easily 10-15 degrees below normal for highs this time of the
year.

Otherwise...as winds turn to the west and northwest and 850mb temps
fall into the teens below zero Friday...would expect to see lake
effect machine ramp up through the day Friday. Wraparound moisture
will likely be an aid to lake effect as things switch from synoptic
to more lake-based. Mid-level synoptic moisture could linger into
Saturday morning...which would further assist in lake effect
production.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Tuesday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Medium

As mentioned above...lake effect should be ongoing at the start of
the long term...as cold northwesterly air flows into the Great
Lakes. Will have to keep an eye on shifting wind directions as
various shortwaves drop into the back of the trough this weekend
into early next week...as this will determine where snow bands set
up and for how long. Even so...reasonably confident to put in some
LES based pops for primarily the west to northwest flow areas
through the weekend into early next week...with lower pops toward
the end of the period indicating decreased confidence. Coldest air
of the season should move into the region during the weekend and
into early next week. Will definitely be something to keep an eye
on, especially for those who work outside or plan to do any work
outside. Though there are some disagreements in model guidance
especially beyond the weekend...there are still signals for cold air
to persist perhaps into the middle of the month.

evening gives way to a slowly lowering and thickening mid and

evening as high pressure remains in control of the wx across
Northern Michigan. Conditions will begin to increase to SCA criteria

expected across any of our nearshore areas thru tonight as high
pressure and dry air maintain control of our wx. Widespread wintry
precip will develop on Thursday ahead of deepening low pressure
