Morning composite analysis reveals a well defined mid level
circulation over the Dakotas with a smaller wave along the
Nebraska/Iowa border. Elongated surface low is over the
Nebraska/Iowa border extending SW to the Texas panhandle. Plume
of moisture stretches of the Texas Gulf coast into the central
Plains ahead of the low with a batch of precip from Missouri
northward into the Midwest and wrapping back into the Dakotas
along a well defined deformation axis with the main circulation.
Across our area, a mix of sun and clouds this morning with some
mid cloud cover and hints of lake induced streamers off Superior
and Huron.

Upstream wave expected to slowly migrate into eastern South Dakota
while sfc low develops into central Iowa by early evening.
Attending deformation axis looking to nose into northern and
central Lower Michigan during the course of the afternoon
spreading some light rainfall into the region, although wedge of
drier low level air below 5K feet noted on forecast soundings may
hang on through the afternoon keeping precip potential/QPF on the
low side. But current radar trends and guidance suggest precip
possibilities will impact areas along/south of M-32 through the
afternoon. Going forecast reflects that idea with little changes
planned at the moment.

Otherwise, increasing cloud cover will be the rule particularly
across Lower Michigan with a bit more filtered sun/high clouds
impacting the U.P. A cool day with below normal temperatures, and
temps running a good 10 to 15 degrees below normal for late May.

.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

...Frosty early morning...followed by increasing chances of showers
this afternoon and tonight...

High Impact Weather Potential...Areas of frost will continue to
impact much of Eastern Upper and Northern Lower Michigan early this
morning.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Cold front has pushed SE of Michigan...
with strong CAA ongoing across the Western Great Lakes region in
it's wake. Skies are completely clear across our entire CWA and
winds have become light/variable...allowing temps to fall into the
30s.

After an unseasonably cold and frost start to our morning...clouds
will begin to increase from SW to NE across our CWA as the NE edge
of the moisture shield associated with developing low pressure over
the Central Plains starts to overspread Michigan. Still appears
increasing shower chances will hold off until this afternoon...with
showers likely thru tonight as the low center skirts south of
Michigan. Near term models differ on just how far north sufficiently
deep moisture will ride into our CWA. Latest RAP limits POPs to
south of M-32...while the latest NAM suggest POPS will lift all the
way to the Straits. ECMWF shows a general compromise of the two
aformentioned solutions. Will lean toward the middle ground ECMWF...
pushing precip chances a bit further north but falling short of the
Straits area.

Next issue is (believe it or not) precip type. Some models are
suggesting the possibility of some wet snow mixing in with the rain
showers across some inland areas of Northern Lower Michigan (mainly
around GOV and HTL). NAM BUFR soundings are nearly completely below
freezing for a few hours late tonight. Not totally convinced of this
occurrence as of yet and will therefore hold off on adding a mix of
snow to the late night forecast for now.

No doubt our temps will remain unseasonably cool for the next 24
hours (at least). High temps this afternoon will only warm into the
50s...with overnight lows tonight cooling back into the upper 30s to
around 40 degrees. Do not expect frost will be a big issue tonight
given rain chances as well as strengthen wind speeds along the
northern periphery of the low tracking just south of Michigan.

.SHORT TERM...(Friday through Saturday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Low

Pattern Synopsis:

A closed upper-level low will progress across the Midwest on Friday
as an associated surface cyclone treks across the Ohio River Valley
and into Appalachia. Amplified upper-level ridging will move
overhead in behind this closed low over the weekend. Subsidence
provided aloft at the inflection point of these features will help
build surface high pressure across the Great Lakes over the weekend.

Forecast/Details:

Precip may be ongoing at the start of the forecast period Friday
morning, especially across the southern half of the CWA. This precip
is expected to quickly depart, however, and is discussed in greater
depth in the near term portion. As this precip associated with the
aformentioned surface cyclone continues to move east through the
day, skies are expected to clear from north to south across the area
as high pressure begins to settle in for the weekend. Prolonged NE
winds are expected through the period which will help bring cooler,
dry air into northern Michigan and should prevent additional precip
from forming. High temperatures are anticipated to be rather cool
again on Friday as most will struggle to reach into the mid 50s
during the afternoon. Highs look to warm up some on Saturday as
temperatures should climb above 60 again. While temperatures look to
dip down into the mid 30s Friday night and possibly again Saturday
night, the very dry low-level airmass in place will create
relatively large temperature/dewpoint spreads, thus limiting the
development of frost across most areas despite clear skies overnight
and relatively lighter winds.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Wednesday)

High Impact Weather Potential: Low

A closed upper-level low centered over the Ohio River Valley will
progress into New England by Monday as amplified ridging continues
to slide across the upper Great Lakes/southern Canada. Surface high
pressure should largely hold firm across the region through the
first half of next week, helping to keep precip chances on the low
side overall. Troughing looks to move across the Great Lakes in the
late Monday/Tuesday timeframe, but meager return flow from the Gulf
of Mexico should result in less than ideal low-level moisture being
in place to support any more substantial rain/thunderstorm chances
heading into the back half of the week. While warm advection into
the Great Lakes won't be impressive, temperatures do look to climb
back to seasonal averages near 70 by the start of next week. A few
days may be on the cooler side should cloud cover and precip chances
materialize.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Friday morning)

Low pressure will track just south of Michigan today and tonight.
Northern edge of deep moisture associated with this system will
ride thru Northern Lower Michigan...producing scattered to
numerous showers beginning this afternoon and continuing thru
tonight. VFR conditions today will deteriorate to MVFR tonight as
showers arrive and increase in coverage. Northerly winds will
become NE at around 10 kts...with some increase in winds speeds
occurring tonight as the low center slides south of Michigan.

Winds and waves will remain below SCA criteria today into early
evening...but will strengthen later tonight into Friday as our
pressure gradient tightens along the northern periphery of low
pressure tracking just south of Michigan. Chances of showers will
increase by this afternoon and will continue thru tonight for much
of Northern Lake Michigan and Northern Lake Huron north of the
low track.
