.SYNOPSIS...
Brisk and gusty this afternoon as the storm responsible for the
wintry mix moves away from the region. Dry conditions expected
through Sunday morning as high pressure builds in and moves
eastward across the region. Another storm will quickly follow
bringing a light to moderate snowfall Sunday afternoon into
Sunday night.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Secondary low will continue to deepen as it tracks northeastward
up the New England coast to Nova Scotia by 00Z/Sunday. Brisk
and gusty westerly winds have developed across the local area
with gusts 30 to 40 mph occurring. The winds will begin to
weaken by late in the day as ridging builds in from the west and
the lingering rain and snow showers will diminish. Temperatures
are warming with upper 40s in the mid Hudson Valley however
readings are still in the upper 20s and lower 30s across the
southern Adirondacks. The forecast remains on track.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY/...
Tranquil conditions with seasonable temperatures will occur
tonight, as high pressure moves over the area. Winds will
quickly diminish this evening as the pressure gradient weakens
with the high building in.

Sunday will start out dry with increasing clouds, with the next
storm system already approaching from the south and west. This
storm looks to feature dual-cyclones again, although the
stronger system this time is expected to the coastal cyclone.
Model guidance has generally come to more of a consensus that
our area should receive little, if any precip directly from the
coastal cyclone with northern stream upper level low providing
most of the large scale ascent. So at this time we are expecting
mainly light snow accumulations (1-3 inches), however some of
the area from the Catskills eastward to southern Berkshires and
Litchfield Hills could have borderline Advisory level snowfall
(2-4 inches).

Snow should develop Sunday afternoon and continue into Sunday
night. Thermal profiles from forecast soundings indicate precip
should fall as all snow, however the profile is "warm" for
January with snow to liquid ratios expected to be around 9:1 or
10:1, which is below climo. This should limit totals, but will
result in a more dense snowfall. Will continue to monitor
trends, as a northward shift in the projected coastal cyclone
track could result in greater snowfall. For now, will continue
to mention potential for light to moderate accumulations in the
Hazardous Weather Outlook.

The snow should taper off to scattered snow showers Monday
morning, as cyclone tracks northeastward from just off the Cape
Cod coast to the Gulf of Maine. The upper low is forecast to
only slowly move east into New England, so some wrap-around snow
showers could linger into the afternoon.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Chaotic cyclonic upper flow in general through at least the
middle of next week. Timing and track of upper and surface
features in sources of guidance/ensembles quite different. One
upper feature broadly timed in the later Tuesday, Tuesday night
and early Wednesday time frame. That system looks to affect
mainly northern areas to southern VT and northern Berkshires
with some scattered snow shower activity due to upslope and
western periphery of upper dynamics.

Generally dry later Wednesday through Friday as short wave low
amplitude northern stream upper ridge may temporarily build into
our region. However, there are some hints of trailing upper
energy and flat upper troughing, building back to a closed upper
low in the SE U.S. slowing the upper ridging from building into
our region.

Flat upper troughing possible connecting to the closed upper
low suggests more clouds than sun during the day and intervals
of clouds at night. Cannot rule out some flurry or snow shower
activity but coverage too little to put in forecast until better
consensus from sources of guidance/ensembles on how well the
short wave northern stream upper ridging could build in, which
would suggest less clouds and no flurries/snow showers. Will
have to watch the track and movement of the closed upper low for
beyond Friday.

Highs in the mid to upper 30s through the period of Tuesday
through Friday with upper 20s to around 30 northern areas and
near 40 southern areas.

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
MVFR cigs remain in place at PSF and GFL with VFR cigs at ALB and
POU. Given persistent northwest flow off the still warm lakes, GFL
and PSF will likely remain MVFR. ALB may briefly return to MVFR
which is why we included a TEMPO group. Cigs should improve this
evening to VFR at GFL and PSF but should drop back to MVFR levels
with some IFR cigs not ruled out towards 06 - 09 UTC. MVFR ceilings
linger into tomorrow morning before finally improving to VFR by 15 -
18 UTC. Mid and high clouds ahead of our next system return late in
the TAF period with snow expected late tomorrow afternoon at all of
the TAF sites.

West-northwest winds this afternoon will remain strong with
sustained winds ranging 10 - 20kts with gusts to 25 - 35kts. Winds
should weaken this evening but stay sustained 5 - 8kts through 00 -
03 UTC before dropping below 5kts through the end of the TAF
period.

Hydrological concerns are not anticipated through the next
week.

A storm will continue to bring snow, sleet, freezing rain and
rain to the area through this morning. Total QPF amounts of 1/2
to 1 inch are expected with some enhanced areas just over an
inch in portions of the southern Adirondacks and southern Green
Mountains. Some minor river rises are expected across the
southern half of the area, but will not be significant.

Another storm will bring a light to moderate snowfall to the
area Sunday and Sunday night.
