* WHAT...Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet
  accumulations of one to two inches and flat ice accumulations

* WHERE...Litchfield County in northwestern Connecticut, eastern
  Catskills, mid Hudson Valley, southern and central Taconics in

.SYNOPSIS...
Cold temperatures with mostly cloudy skies today. Some light
snow is possible tonight into early Sunday. Temperatures will
return closer to normal for Sunday. Another weak system is
expected to bring light snow on Monday, with a more widespread
snowfall expected Monday night into Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1245 PM EST...Satellite imagery revealing a fairly large
area of clearing with just scattered high level clouds across a
good portion of the area from around the Capital District
northward. Lowered cloud cover for the afternoon in these areas.
Even across southern areas only broken high level clouds in
place. Despite more in the way of sunshine, temperatures will
remain cold. Dry conditions to persist through early this
evening.

A cold and dry airmass continues to feed into the forecast area
from a ridge of high pressure folding in from southeast Canada.
Highs will once again be in the chilly side due to the feed of
Arctic air from the north along with the limited insolation,
with upper teens to mid-20s expected. Some weak isentropic lift
begins late in the day in response to low-amplitude shortwave
energy approaching upstream, but with dry low levels precip will
likely not reach the ground until after 6 PM.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY/...
A couple of subtle features embedded in the very strong midlevel
flow downstream of the orphaned polar vortex over the upper
Midwest/southern Canada may result in some nuisance wintry precip
tonight/Sunday morning and again Monday. Tonight, weak isentropic
lift continues in response to a low-amplitude shortwave trough
quickly moving just north of the St. Lawrence Valley. This will
result in an increase in relative humidity in the 925 to 700 mb
layer from south to north. However, model forecast soundings and
time-height sections show a dearth of moisture above 700 mb. So the
absence of lift through a deep saturated layer will keep QPF rather
light, likely AOB 0.10" for the area. Also, the temperature in the
saturated layer will be warmer than -10C, leading to the possibility
of freezing drizzle/snizzle in addition to light snow. Given the
elusive nature of FZDZ and the lack of QPF, it is uncertain if FZDZ
would have much of an impact even if it developed, so will refrain
from issuing any headlines at this time. Will gradually ramp up PoPs
from chance prior to 06Z Sun to high chance/low likely 06-12Z. Temps
likely fairly steady in the teens and low 20s tonight.

Expect any lingering light precip to end by mid-morning Sunday as
the flow goes back down the isentropes with a ridge of high pressure
once again nosing in. Models suggest deeper mixing than in recent
days, so the high temperature is expected to be a bit milder and
back closer to seasonal normals in the mid-20s to mid-30s. Some
breaks in the cloud cover are possible especially along/north of I-
90 in the afternoon.

The brief period of tranquil weather is likely to continue for
Sunday night before the next system arrives. If we see a bit of
clearing, lows could end up well below guidance. However, degree of
clearing is uncertain. For now will hedge a bit lower than blended
guidance with lows ranging from the mid-single digits over the
southern Adirondacks where clearing is most likely, to low 20s over
southern zones where clouds are likely to be thicker. Will begin
some slight chance PoPs 09Z accounting for uncertainty with the
timing of the next system.

Monday, another weak ripple in the strong midlevel flow is likely to
trigger another weak bout of isentropic lift. Since the midlevel
feature is so subtle, there is low confidence in timing of the
associated precipitation, but generally the highest PoPs in the
likely-categorical range are indicated 18Z Mon to 00Z Tue. Again,
models suggest some loss of moisture above 700 (and especially 500)
mb, but will refrain from including any FZDZ at this time. This
looks like another nuisance event, but possibly a bit heavier than
tonight's event. Early forecast for accum is mainly 2 inches or
less, highest west of the Hudson Valley. The 0C wet bulb temp aloft
is forecast to approach the Mid Hudson Valley and NW CT, so will
include some mixed precip mention, although QPF appears to be very
light here. Cut down highs from NBM guidance a couple degrees given
expected clouds and cold drainage flow; expecting mainly 20s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Active weather pattern with two systems expected to impact the
region: 1) Monday night into Tuesday night and 2) Thursday into
Friday. Both systems will be southern stream systems and are
expected to tap into plenty of moisture.

Guidance is similar with the track of the first system with the
surface low passing just south of Long Island, however not with its
timing. The GFS is faster than the ECMWF with the NAM more similar
to the ECMWF. Guidance from the Weather Prediction Center prefers a
solution somewhere between that of the ECMWF/GFS. Based in this
forecast has precipitation overspreading the area overnight Monday
night into early Tuesday then continuing through the day Tuesday
with a widespread moderate to heavy snowfall. Guidance indicates
some warmer air moves in aloft resulting in chances for sleet and
freezing rain across portions of the mid-Hudson Valley, northwestern
Connecticut into the Berkshires. This would cuts back on the
expected snowfall in these areas.

Only a brief break between systems is expected overnight Tuesday
into Wednesday night as high pressure slides across the region.

Uncertainty with the second system is much greater as the track is
very much in question, however the signal is there for a widespread
precipitation event. The GFS passes the low to our northwest and the
ECMWF to our southeast. The GFS track puts our area on the warmer
side of the system with a transition from snow to ice and then rain
for most areas. The ECMWF track has the area on the colder side
which favors mostly all snow with a wintry mix possible to the south
and east of the Capital District pending on how far north the warm
nose gets. With the system several days out have favored a blended
approach and have snow initially overspreading the area Thursday
into Thursday evening with a wintry mix developing southeast of the
Capital District.

Below normal temperatures expected to continue with a trend toward
normal by the end of the week possible.

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
An approaching upper level disturbance will bring some spotty
light snow or sleet to the TAF sites tonight into Sunday
morning.

VFR conditions should prevail through at least 00Z/Sun. Then, we
expect lower clouds and spotty light snow to develop from
southwest to northeast between roughly 03Z-07Z/Sun. Slightly
warmer air aloft may allow for a mix of light snow and sleet at
KPOU and KPSF. Flight categories should fall into the MVFR range
for Cigs, and MVFR/IFR for Vsbys as the precipitation develops.

There could be patchy freezing drizzle at KPOU and KPSF as well
between 10Z-14Z/Sun, although overall probabilities remain low
and therefore will keep out mention in current TAFs.

The light snow/sleet should gradually taper off from NW to SE
between 14Z-16Z/Sun. Vsbys should gradually improve during this
time to VFR, although MVFR Cigs may linger through or shortly
after 18Z/Sun.

North/northeast winds will average 5-10 KT this afternoon, then
decrease to less than 5 KT tonight. Winds will then back into
the west to northwest at less than 5 KT Sunday morning, although
may remain light/variable at KGFL.

No hydrological issues are expected through over the next
several days. Temperatures are expected to mainly remain below
normal and below freezing, allowing ice to expand and thicken on
area waterways. A widespread snowfall is expected Monday night
into Tuesday which will add to the snowpack.
