as high pressure builds across New England. A coastal low
brings additional rain chances through the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 355 AM EDT Friday...
Latest analysis reveals sfc high pressure in place over the Mid
Atlantic, ridging south into the local area. Early morning radar
depicts a few light showers/drizzle moving onshore in far SE VA near
VA Beach with no accumulation expected. Mainly dry elsewhere with a
stratus deck of clouds over much of the Piedmont and SE VA and
mainly clear skies over the Eastern Shore. Isolated areas of patchy
fog will be possible early this morning primarily in the far NW
Piedmont and northern MD Eastern Shore. Expect any fog to quickly
dissipate shortly after sunrise. Light NE winds this morning will
increase to around 5-10 mph this afternoon with higher gusts near
the coast. Temps as of 345 AM ranged generally from the lower to mid
60s inland and mid to upper 60s near the coast. Mostly cloudy SW and
partly sunny NE today with highs in the mid to upper 70s. PoPs will
generally be confined to the SW Piedmont and SE portions of the area
later today as the local area is in between a weakening trough aloft
pivoting in from the west and a coastal trough/weak coastal low off
the Carolina coast. Expect only isolated showers today with most
showers expected to hold off until this evening.

Wx pattern changes very little for Fri-Sun. Combo of hi pres
near/E of New England and a trough/psbl sfc lo off the coastal
Carolinas will keep onshore winds and prob for rain. There
continue to be model difference wrt where the highest QPF would
be...esp over the weekend. Weakening trough aloft will be
entering the region from the W Sat which would potentially
result in SCT rain. Leaning toward much of the rain being
toward the coast (esp SE VA-NE NC) where coastal trough and/or
sfc lo pres would focus moisture/pcpn. Locally heavy rainfall
and gusty NE winds would be focused closer to the coast. QPF up
to an inch inland...a few inches psbl over SE VA- NC NE.
VRB clouds-mostly cloudy w/ limited forcing for too much coverage
of rain over the local area tonight through Fri evening (PoPs
generally 10-30%...increasing to 40% from interior NE NC to
S Central VA toward evening). Lows tonight in the l-m60s. Highs
Fri in the m-u70s. Generally a cloudy weekend. Highest PoPs
(60-80%) across SE VA- NE NC primarily from Sat afternoon into
Sun morning...30-50% elsw. Lows Fri night in the l-m60s
inland...m-u60s at the coast. Highs Sat/Sun from the l70s inland
to the m-u70s toward the coast. Lows Sat night in the l-m60s.

coastal trough/(weak) sfc lo pres off the NC/SC coast will break
down gradually early next week. Clouds and psbl rain may linger
at the coast Sun night/Mon...OTW improving wx and a warming
trend for most of the local area next week. Ridge aloft building
back into the region from the W will likely put a cap on rain
chcs. Temperatures will avg several degs F above normal.
Lows Sun night in the l-m60s. Highs Mon in the m-u70s. Lows Mon
night in the l-m60s. Highs Tue/Wed/Thu in the u70-l80s w/ nighttime
lows in the u50s-l60s inland...l-m60s at the coast.

.AVIATION /08Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 155 AM EDT Friday...
Widespread MVFR CIGS across SE coastal terminals (PHF-ORF-ECG)
and across much of the VA Piedmont w/ BKN- OVC stratus and
isolated areas of drizzle and light showers along the coast.
Expect mainly dry/MVFR conditions to persist overnight and
through the morning, as winds remain mainly NNE/NE AOB 10 kt
with slightly higher winds along the coast. CIGs are expected to
rise to VFR this afternoon except portions of NC. Showers are
expected to increase in coverage late this afternoon into this
evening across the Piedmont and near the coast. However,
confidence is too low at this time for coverage of showers to
include in the tafs.
Outlook: Developing low pressure off the coastal Carolinas
during the weekend results in an increasing rain threat (again
with highest chcs along the SE coast) with additional flight
restrictions (mainly CIGS) both Sat/Sun. The low lingers just
off the coast into early next week.

.MARINE...
As of 355 AM EDT Friday...
A 1023mb high pressure is centered over ON/QB early this
morning, with a ~1015mb low pressure off the SC coast. This has
created enough of a pressure gradient locally for a 10-15kt NE
wind for the lower Bay, lower James, and ocean S of Cape
Charles, with NE 5-10kt elsewhere. Seas were near 5ft S of Cape
Charles, but have been trending downward, so the current SCA
will continue through 7 AM. Farther N, seas are generally 3-4ft.
The pressure gradient is expected to slacken today into this
evening as the initial high to the north weakens. By tonight and
Saturday as stronger high (~1030mb) builds south out of eastern
Canada into New England. Meanwhile, the low continues to linger
off the Carolina coast. An ENE wind of 10-15kt is expected
today into this evening, before increasing to 15-20kt for the
Bay, lower James, and ocean N of Cape Henry by later tonight
into Saturday. An ENE wind will generally be 10-15kt elsewhere.
SCAs have been issued beginning late tonight through Saturday
for the Bay and lower James, and for the ocean beginning
Saturday morning and continuing through Sunday when seas could
eventually reach 5-7ft.
There is more uncertainty Saturday night into Sunday. The low will
linger in vicinity of the Outer Banks, but there is some question as
to how far N the low will travel. The GFS is the farthest N this
cycle, with the CMC, ECMWF, and NAM keeping it S of Oregon Inlet.
Regardless, there should be enough gradient to maintain SCA
conditions into Sunday for at least a portion of the area, the
primary question will be the strength of the onshore flow. Seas
remain elevated into early next week as onshore flow continues,
albeit weaker.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Prolonged period of east and northeast flow will result in continued
slow rise to tidal anomalies. Nuisance to minor flooding is
possible, especially for bay-side portions of the Northern Neck and
Eastern Shore counties into this weekend.
