Low pressure approaches from the southeast Thursday night and Friday. High pressure builds in from the northwest this weekend into early next week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/... As of 720 PM EDT Wednesday... The convection across the se has dissipated with loss of heating. Latest MSAS still has the cold front well NW of the area this eve. This boundary is progged to weaken/wash out as it slowly sags SE across VA later tonite. Expect a mid level cloud deck to accompany the weakening boundary. High res models still differ on whether any pcpn survives east of the mts, but kept a slght shwr chc overnite in case any do dvlp. Little if any QFP expected. Best area to see any shwrs will be across the lwr Md ern shore. Expect some ptchy fog to form in some areas as well. Lows upr 60s - lwr 70s. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY/... As of 340 PM EDT Wednesday... The cold front stalls and washes out over the Piedmont Thur while a shortwave stalls over the region. Meanwhile, a coastal low is expected to develop north of the Bahamas and move NNW towards the Carolinas Thurs-Fri before curving NE out to see. The NHC has a 70% chance of this feature developing into a Tropical Depression over the next 48 hrs. PoPs increase Thurs afternoon with a band of showers/isolated storms possibly developing in the Piedmont between RIC and SBY. Have increased PoPs to 35-45% for this region. Any convection gradually drifts W through the afternoon with showers tapering off Thurs evening. Clouds linger through Fri as the aforementioned shortwave lingers over the local area and the coastal low approaches from the SSE. Additional showers (perhaps a low-end chance of a storm or two in the afternoon) are possible Fri as the low moves NE away from the local area with the greatest chance along and east of I-95 (35-50% PoPs). Cooler Thurs and Fri due to cloud cover with highs generally in the lower 80s (lower to mid 80s for NE NC). Lows Thurs night in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Lows Fri night in the mid to upper 60s to around 70F. The ridge remains offshore/off the SE coast this weekend with models continuing to show a weak coastal low making the northeast turn away from the local area and moving out to sea through the weekend. However, cloud cover likely lingers into Sat given N/NNE flow and the shortwave trough lingering near the coast. However, expect breaks in the clouds by Sat afternoon/evening, particularly in the NE portions of the FA. In addition, a few showers/storms will again be possible Sat afternoon in the Piedmont. Highs Sat in the lower to mid 80s. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... As of 345 PM EDT Wednesday... Behind the coastal low, the main story will be a prolonged period of above normal temps, albeit not as above average as the area saw this week. The MJO is projected to remain between phases 3 and 4 through the extended which favors above normal temps for the local area. Ensembles support this idea with a fairly strong signal for an amplified pattern and ridge over the East Coast late this weekend through early next week with high pressure building overhead. The CPC has a 80% chance of above average temps in the 6-10 day outlook. However, although the upper level pattern is favorable for above normal temps, the low level winds will be generally NE/ENE through mid week which will limit temps each day. High temps will generally be in the lower to mid 80s from Sun through Wed. Overnight lows will remain in the mid to upper 60s to around 70F Sat night, cooling to the lower 60s W to upper 60s E Sun through Wed nights.
