Area forecast discussion, Aug 3, 2:03 PM EDT, 1 hour 20 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Wakefield VA
203 PM EDT Tue Aug 3 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
An upper level trough will stall west of the area across the
Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys from today through Thursday.
Meanwhile, a frontal boundary will also stall near the Carolina
and Mid-Atlantic coasts with several waves of low pressure
tracking northeast along the boundary.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 8 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1020 AM EDT Tuesday...
For the morning update have tweaked pops a touch higher across
the region for today and this evening as the current radar
trends show more activity a bit farther west and also the high
res models show a little more activity this afternoon after 18z
in the VA Tidewater and NE NC.

Overall thinking remains the same as the initial shortwave is
exiting the eastern US trough over the Southern Appalachians
and moving across VA this morning. Then the stronger shortwave
will begin rotate through the trough over the TN valley this
evening and through the Carolinas on Wednesday. Initial
precipitation should be light and spotty today especially for
inland areas as dry mid level air limits the chances for rain to
reach the ground. Later in the afternoon activity will increase
in coastal areas where the moisture depth is better. Did not
adjust temperatures at this point as cloud should keep readings
in the mid 70s to near 80 today.

Prev Discussion
GOES water vapor channels depict an amplified trough digging
across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys with moisture increasing
along the Southeast coast in a region of SW flow aloft. At the
surface, 1020mb high pressure extends from the Great Lakes
across the northern Mid-Atlantic into Southern New England. A
stationary front is located off the Carolina coast co-located
with an inverted trough. Partly to mostly cloudy locally this
morning under mid and high clouds. Temperatures range from the
low 60s NW to the low 70s SE, with dewpoints primarily in the
60s.

An area of low pressure is expected to organize along the
stationary front today and track NE off the Outer Banks this
afternoon. Meanwhile, high pressure will remain anchored N of
the region and ridge southward into the Piedmont. Showers, and
perhaps a few embedded tstms (although instability will be
limited) are expected to spread across SE VA and NE NC later
this morning into the afternoon. Farther inland, a very atypical
early August day is expected as high pressure ridges southward
under increasingly moist SW flow aloft. This will result in
thickening cloud cover. The sub-cloud layer below 10kft will
remain dry. However, a few light showers/sprinkles are possible
later morning and early afternoon with increasing moisture and
some lift aloft. High temperatures will mainly be in the upper
70s to near 80F.

&&

.SHORT TERM /8 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 400 AM EDT Tuesday...

Another area of low pressure organizes along the stationary
front tonight into Wednesday morning and tracks northeast across
the Outer Banks and off VA coast. The 03/00z model guidance has
shifted eastward with this system, with the greatest threat for
heavy rainfall over coastal NE NC, with a slightly lesser
threat for interior NE NC, SE VA, and the VA Eastern Shore.
During this time a powerful ~110kt 200mb jet develops over the
Northeast, with SE VA and the coastal Carolinas located under
the RRQ of this jet. PW values increase to the order of 2.0-2.3"
in vicinity of the stationary front. Where the heaviest rain
falls will likely be dictated by where the best instability
gradient locates beneath the upper jet, and as previously
mentioned locally this will be over coastal NE NC, but
regionally is S of the Albemarle Sound. WPC has NE NC in a
slight risk for excessive rainfall, with a marginal risk for
interior NE NC and SE VA for tonight and Wednesday/Wednesday
night. A Flash Flood Watch has not been issued at this time, but
later shifts may need to consider issuing a watch for far SE
portions of the area.

The front will remain near the the coast Wednesday night into
Thursday. However, the upper support will weaken as the upper
trough to the W fills and lifts northeast, and also the best
moisture gets shunted offshore. Surface high pressure will
continue to remain over the Piedmont Wednesday through Thursday
maintaining low-level dry air. Therefore, a sharp gradient in
QPF is expected across the area. The latest storm total QPF
ranges from no rainfall over the NW Piedmont, to less than 0.25"
for the RIC metro, to ~0.75" for SBY, to 1-2" for Hampton
Roads, and 3-4" for coastal NE NC.

Clouds and onshore flow will result in highs in the mid 70s to
near 80F Wednesday, then upper 70s to low 80s Thursday. Lows
will mainly be range from the low 60s NW to around 70F SE.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 1145 AM EDT Tuesday...

The chances for rain shower continue along the coast on Friday
as the weakening frontal boundary is still lingering near the NC
coast, but the chances for rain are much lower than early in the
week. A shortwave trough swings across the Mid-Atlantic States
on Saturday allow for a better chance of shower across the
entire area, 30 - 40%. Temperatures on Friday and Saturday
remain generally below normal with highs in the low to mid 80s.

After the upper trough exits the area, a strong upper level
high pressure system will build over the southeastern US area
more traditional summer will return. Expect a low chance for an
afternoon shower on Sunday and Monday with temperatures
returning to more season summer like values in the upper 80s to
lower 90s.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 200 PM EDT Tuesday...

A stationary frontal boundary is running up along the eastern
seaboard and will remain there for the next 24 to 36 hours as it
is between a trough of low pressure over the Ohio valley and
Tennessee valley and a ridge of high pressure over the Western
Atlantic. At this time seeing many VFR conditions at the TAF
sites, but will see rain gradually spreading over the area from
south to north as a shortwave rotates through the trough and up
the eastern seaboard. Expect mvfr conditions during the
overnight hours with occasional IFR conditions possible for ECG
and ORF as more persistent rain and easterly flow reduce
ceilings. The wave of low pressure will lift north along the
front during the day on Wednesday and should be north of the
region by late afternoon Wed. This will turn the flow west and
should return most of the area to VFR conditions by Wed evening.

Outlook Wed night through Saturday...expect mainly vfr
conditionsexcept along the coast where occasional showers on
through Friday could produce periods of mvfr conditions.

&&

.MARINE...
As of 650 AM EDT Tuesday...

An inverted trough of low pressure and it's associated frontal
boundary remains nearly stationary from the coastal plain of SC
to the southern Outer Banks of NC early this morning. Winds are
E to NE at 10-15kt across the southern coastal waters and the
Currituck Sound and generally around 10 kt (or less) over the
remainder of the marine area. Seas avg around 3 ft in the NC
waters and This afternoon, weak high pressure extends over the
waters with 2 ft farther N, with waves 1-2 ft in the lower Bay
and around 1 foot over the rest of the Bay and rivers.

The boundary is expected to gradually lift a bit to the N later
today, and then continue lifting N overnight into Wed, as an
area of low pressure rides along the boundary. The models
continue to show some disagreement with respect to the precise
placement/strength of the low. The general trend is that today
will feature the stronger winds confined to the Sound and NC
waters (but possibly reaching as far N as the lower Bay and VA
coastal waters S of Cape Charles). By Wed, the strongest winds
are more likely to move N and reach into the Bay and coastal
waters N of the VA/NC border (while diminishing a bit to the S
in the vicinity of the boundary). Have issued a SCA headline for
the Currituck Sound beginning later today for winds of 15-20kt
and have added the NC coastal waters with the 7am update cycle.
Will hold off across the lower Bay (where winds will avg around
15kt) and southern VA coastal waters with seas expected to
build to 4 ft with 15-20kt winds. Otherwise, confidence is
increasing that much of the rest of the marine area will at
least reach marginal SCA conditions by Wed morning with seas
expected to build to 5-6ft N and 4-5 ft S with 15-20 kt winds
into the Bay and at least the lower James as well. Will hold off
on any headlines given this will be either very late 2nd or
more likely 3rd period. The trough will slowly move offshore and
weaken by Thu allowing conditions to improve with seas of 3-4ft
and winds 10-15kt or less.

Will go with moderate rip current risk for southern beaches
today (low north) and moderate for all beaches on Wed.
