What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

Area forecast discussion, Jun 18, 1:13 AM EDT, 1 hour 49 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Wakefield VA
113 AM EDT Fri Jun 18 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure builds across the area through tonight, then
slides offshore by midday Friday. A cold front approaches from
the northwest on Saturday and weakens north of the local area on
Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 730 PM EDT Thursday...

Latest analysis reveals ~1018mb sfc high pressure centered
across the east coast. Aloft, mid/upper trough axis is aligned
offshore, as upper ridge over the desert southwest slowly drifts
east. Meanwhile, we're continuing to monitor a broad area of
low pressure over the Bay of Campeche.

Mainly clear skies and pleasant/dry conditions this evening with
temperatures in the 70s and dew pts in the 40s and 50s (some
locations had dew pts into the upper 30s a few hrs ago). Surface
high pressure will remain centered over the area overnight,
bringing mainly clear skies and light winds. Another
comfortably cool night with early morning lows mostly in the
50s, though a few upper 40s will be possible in typically
coolest spots well inland, and lower 60s at the immediate
coast.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 330 PM EDT Thursday...

Surface high slides offshore by late Fri morning, allowing
winds to veer around to the SSW and increase by aftn. The next
northern stream low pushes across eastern Canada Late Friday
through Sat night, with the associated sfc cold front dropping
to near the Mason-Dixon line by Saturday evening. Expect Friday
to be a dry day across the local area, with temperatures
warming to the upper 80s to around 90F (although dew points
will only recover into the upper 50s). Another MCS/MCV looks to
form and drop across the Ohio Valley on Friday, but likely
fading and washing out before reaching the local area Friday
night. Therefore other than some patchy stratocu, partly to
mostly clear and milder tomorrow night with lows around 70F.

Saturday still appears to be dry for most (especially central
and south), increasing moisture pooling along a developing
pre-frontal trough (combined with temperatures rising into the
low- mid 90s/60s dew points) will be enough to warrant 15-25%
PoPs NW of a FVX-RIC-SBY line from Sat aftn into Sat evening.
Warmer and increasingly muggy Sat night with lows in the mid 60s
to low 70s.

Sunday we'll start to turn our eyes to remnant tropical moisture
slowly lifting north from the Gulf coast across the southeast.
12z/17 models seem a bit slower to lift remnant tropical
moisture slowly NE across the southeast and (eventually) the
Carolinas late in the weekend. Locally, Sunday still looking a
bit drier on average with only 15-20% PoPs (highest west) for
isolated diurnally- driven convection. Highs Sun mainly in the
low 90s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 330 PM EDT Thursday...

Latest model consensus continues to slow slightly with the
tracking of Gulf moisture toward the local area. There is fairly
good agreement that the system then tracks NE toward the srn
Appalachians by late this weekend, with remnants of the system
then likely take an east- northeasterly track as it gets picked
up be the W-SW flow aloft (and potentially move to a position
in ern NC by Monday night). If this system impacts the local
area, it would do so late on Monday (and it still appears that
the main impact would be areas of heavy rainfall). The operational
ensembles (GEFS/GEPS/EPS) only have 20-40% probabilities for
>1" of rain from 12z Mon-12z Tue (with the EPS and ECMWF
remaining most aggressive). For now, went with likely to high-
end chc PoPs during the day on Mon. As was mentioned
previously, it is too early too get into specifics.

Attention then turns to a potent shortwave that is progged to
track eastward through the far nrn Great Lakes or srn Canada
during the middle of next week. This feature will likely drag a
unusually strong early summer cold front through the region
during the Tue- Tue night timeframe. Have maintained likely PoPs
during the day on Tue and will continue chc PoPs into Wednesday
to account for this. Highs Mon are forecast to be in the mid-
upper 80s, with highs in the upper 80s-around 90F on Tue.
Cooler and much drier wx then looks to return post-frontal for
later next week.

&&

.AVIATION /05Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 110 AM EDT Friday...

VFR through the 06z TAF period. SKC conditions continue through
this morning with FEW aftn CU possible later today. Will keep it
SKC in the TAFs for now. Light/variable winds become SSW at
10-15kt today as high pressure over the region slides offshore.
VFR/continued dry tonight, with SCT-BKN high clouds possible
late.

Outlook...SW flow continues on Sat/Sun, with widely scattered
late day showers/tstms possible each day, especially NW of the
main terminals. Gradually more widespread showers/tstms
possible Monday and Tuesday, with sub-VFR conditions likely in
the heavier showers/tstms.

&&

.MARINE...
As of 300 PM EDT Thursday...

Sub-SCA conditions are expected through tonight as high pressure
remains in control. Winds gradually become S to SW later this
evening into Friday morning with the center of high pressure
drifting off the coast. The pressure gradient tightens through the
day Friday as another system approaches from the west, with S winds
increasing to around 15 to 20 knots by Friday late
afternoon/evening. Winds remain elevated Friday night before
diminishing Saturday morning. SCA's will likely be needed for at
least the Chesapeake Bay starting Friday late afternoon. In
addition, SCA conditions will also be (briefly) possible for the
coastal waters Friday night due to wind gusts in excess of 25 knots
and seas building to around 5 feet. Sub-SCA conditions are expected
through the remainder of the weekend. Another system potentially
impacts the region Monday into Tuesday.

Low rip current risk is expected for tomorrow and Saturday due to
offshore winds.
