High pressure will be centered off the southeast coast through
Thursday. A weakening cold front will move across the area late
Thursday night into Friday morning. High pressure builds into
the area Friday night through Saturday and slides offshore
Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 355 AM EDT Wednesday...
The latest analysis indicates sfc high pressure is centered
well off the SE US coast tonight, with an upper level ridge axis
moving over the local area (the core of the upper ridge centered
over the Gulf of Mexico. High clouds are streaming through the
region, and a warm SW flow prevails with temperatures generally
ranging through the 60s. A few spots may drop to the upper 50s
twds sunrise while most stay at or above 60F.
Partly-mostly cloudy this morning as mid/high clouds drift
across the region, with skies then partly to mostly sunny this
aftn. With dew pts a little higher expect some SCT mid- late
aftn cumulus at least over the interior of the CWA. A few
isolated showers/tstms may develop along the mountains and drift
E into the Piedmont by late aftn, so will have a slight chc PoP
clipping the far NW after ~20Z. Still the high res models are
mostly dry given a breezy W/SW low level flow. Highs today
should rise a few degrees above what occurred yesterday,
generally ranging from the upper 80s to around 90F over central
and southern VA W of the Bay to the mid to upper 80s for the
interior eastern shore and NE NC (the only places that will be
significantly cooler will be along the coast of the eastern
shore and the Outer Banks where highs will be in the upper 70s
to lower 80s).

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 355 AM EDT Wednesday...
The upper ridge slowly breaks down on Thu as the next trough
moves from the upper midwest to the Great Lakes. High
temperatures will again be well above normal, with the core of
the hottest temperatures a bit farther south than on Wed as
clouds will be a bit more prevalent to the N. Highs upper
80s/around southern VA/NE NC with mid 80s over the northern
sections of the CWA. The 00z/28 NAM is most aggressive with
late afternoon/evening convection late Thursday
afternoon/evening with the ridge breaking down while the
remainder of the models generally keep the bulk of the precip N
of the local area until later Thu night-early Fri morning when
the actual cold front moves into the CWA from the NW. PoPs were
mostly maintained to 20-30% across the N (30-40% far N) for
this time period, with mostly dry conditions across the south
until closer to daybreak Fri morning. Warm w/ lows in the 60s.
The models are into better agreement with the front pushing
through w/ the faster solution Fri morning (i.e the slower/wetter
GFS has trended to the ECMWF/Canadian). There appears to be
limited instability w/ the front Fri morning so for now will
mainly just have showers mentioned (though did include a small
area w/ slight chc tstms right along the front between
09-15Z/Fri. PoPs mostly 20-30% Fri morning, dropping off to a
dry forecast for most areas by aftn as much drier air surges in
from the NW (dew pts falling into the 30s and 40s). With the
limited coverage of showers and isolated tstms, SPC currently
has nothing higher than general thunder for the CWA. Becoming
partly to mostly sunny with highs in the mid 70s N and NW to the
lower 80s NE NC.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 320 PM EDT Wednesday...
An upper ridge builds in from the W Saturday night into Sunday,
with high pressure at the surface gradually sliding offshore.
Remaining mostly clear Saturday night/Sunday morning with lows
in the 40s to low 50s toward the coast. A warming trend begins
Sunday with high temperatures ranging frome the mid/upper 70s
along the coast to the low 80s inland. The warming trend
continues Monday as the ridge builds overhead with highs into
the upper 70s to lower-mid 80s. The GFS remains the wettest
solution for Monday as a warm front lifts NE through the area
while the remainder of the models are mostly dry. Will follow
the blends which will allow for a 20% PoP Monday (low chc ~25%
for the Piedmont) as the boundary lifts N. Tuesday then looks
even warmer with highs into the mid-upper 80s (possibly
approaching 90F again) as the local area will be back into the
warm sector ahead of the next trough. There will be a chance for
showers/tstms by late Tue into Tue night. A chc of showers/tstms
lingers into Wednesday as the trough and associated cold front
cross the area.

.AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 730 AM EDT Wednesday...
VFR conditions through the period with mainly just high clouds
across the region (CIGs are 20-25k ft). SW winds will avg 10-15
kt with some gusts of 20-25 kts expected from late this morning
through the afternoon. Some SCT cumulus are expected to develop
during the aftn. Tstms look to remain NW of the main terminals
today and tonight.
Outlook: High pressure remains centered off the Southeast coast
Wednesday night into Thursday. Continued breezy Thursday
afternoon with a SW wind gusting to 20-25kt. There is a 20-30%
chc of showers/tstms from RIC-SBY later Thursday afternoon into
the evening ahead of a cold front. The cold front is expected to
cross the area late Thursday night into Friday morning bringing
a chc of showers. High pressure builds in from the NW Friday
aftn through Saturday and slides offshore by Sunday. VFR/dry
conditions during this period with winds from the W/NW and gusty
Fri into Fri evening. NW winds Sat, generally 10kt or less well
inland but remaining elevated across the eastern shore and near
the coast.

.MARINE...
As of 340 AM EDT Wednesday...
Sfc high pressure is now centered a few hundred miles off the SE
CONUS coast early this morning. A cold front is well to our NW
(extending from the Plains to the Great Lakes). The gradient between
these two features is resulting in SW winds of 15-20 kt over the
waters, with occasional gusts as high as 25 kt (mainly at elevated
sites). Seas are only 2-3.5 ft due to the offshore component of the
flow, with ~2 ft waves on the bay. Will keep SCAs going until 11z/7
AM for the Ches Bay and Lower James River. Winds are expected to
diminish later this morning. However, similar to what happened
yesterday, SW winds will increase over land and there will be a
period of 15-18 kt winds near the land/water interface (mainly over
the rivers/Currituck Sound) this afternoon through early evening. A
period of gusts around or just above 20 kt is likely during this
time, and have issued SCAs for the York/James Rivers and Currituck
Sound from noon-7 PM today. While a few gusts around 20 kt are
likely on the wrn side of the bay, the stable marine BL due to the
cool water should prevent winds from frequently gusting to 20+ kt
over the majority the bay during the day today. Winds diminish over
the rivers/Currituck Sound this evening, but there may be another
brief uptick in SW winds on the bay/ocean tonight, with a few gusts
to 20 kt likely. No new SCAs for tonight attm as local wind probs
for sustained 18 kt winds increase to only 20-40% on the bay for
just a 3 hr period centered around 06z Thu.
The southwest winds will be slightly stronger during the day on
Thursday (again...most pronounced in areas near the land/water
interface). SCAs are likely for the tidal rivers and Currituck
Sound, and possible for the lower Chesapeake Bay. A cold front will
drop south across the area early Friday morning. This will allow
winds to turn to the W-WNW by Fri AM with speeds of 15-20 kt (gusts
to around 25 kt) from early Friday morning through much of the day.
A stronger secondary CAA surge is progged to arrive from the NW
Friday night. The 00z/28 guidance has trended upward with winds, and
solid SCAs appear increasingly likely for all marine zones. Gale
gusts are even possible across the nrn coastal waters Fri night.
Winds quickly diminish on Sat, with sub-SCA conditions returning by
the aftn as high pressure builds into the area.
Seas will generally be 2-4 ft through Thu and will build to 3-5 ft
by Fri AM. 4-5 ft seas are likely Fri night across most of the
ocean. Waves on the bay will be around 2 ft through Thu before
increasing to 3-4 ft by Fri night.
