AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Wakefield VA 208 AM EDT Sat Mar 27 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A cold front moves off the coast this evening. High pressure builds in from the north late tonight into Saturday. A warm front moves north across the region Saturday night into Sunday morning before a strong cold front crosses the region Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening. Cooler and drier conditions are expected Monday as high pressure returns to the region. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/... As of 715 PM EDT Friday... Cold front crossing the area this evening and will push south of the area overnight. Outside of some stray high cirrus clouds, mostly clear conditions expected through Saturday morning. W/SW winds will continue to gust 15-25 mph for a few more hours before becoming light and variable late tonight and overnight as high pressure builds over the area. Low temps tonight will range from the mid to upper 40s N/NW to low and mid 50s SE. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH MONDAY/... As of 330 PM EDT Friday... A warm front located to the south of the FA will linger in the Carolinas, gradually lifting north to near the VA/NC border Sat into Sat evening before lifting north Sat night. Mostly sunny to partly cloudy for the first half of the day with increasing cloud cover from SW to NE through the afternoon and into the evening. Showers and a few storms will track along the front Sat afternoon with PoPs increasing to 30-45% in far southern VA and NE NC. PoPs will shift north through the evening with everyone in 35-50% PoPs at some point in time (50-70% PoPs in far northern VA and the MD portion of the Eastern Shore). Highs Sat in the mid 70s for most, upper 60s near the coast, and upper 60s to lower 70s for the Eastern Shore. Lows Sat night remain mild in the mid to upper 50s to around 60F (low to mid 50s along the coast). Showers should lift north of the FA by early Sun morning. A rather strong shortwave trough will begin digging into the Middle and Upper Mississippi Valley Sun morning. The trough transitions from a positive tilt to a neutral tilt by Sun afternoon as it moves into the Ohio Valley. The jet stream will strengthen into Sun afternoon and evening to around 130-140+ kt winds at 250 mb over the Ohio Valley. This will place the local area under favorable upper level divergence. At the same time, a surface low is expected to deepen as it moves NE through the Ohio Valley and into SE Ontario. This will drive a strong cold front towards the FA late Sun into Sun evening. At the surface, dews in the low to mid 60s and temps in the upper 70s to lower 80s will allow for ample CAPE to develop with MLCAPE around 1000-1500 J/kg (perhaps even to 2000 J/kg in spots) and bulk shear of 50-60+ kt. In response to the these features, a line of storms is expected to develop ahead of the cold front and push east through the Mid-Atlantic through the day Sun with primarily a wind threat. SPC has the entire CWA in a slight (level 2/5) risk for severe with the majority of the CWA under a hatched area. This hatched area highlights the area with the greatest potential (>=10% chance) of a significant severe weather report within 25 miles of a point. The models are in good agreement with the ingredients and the storm mode (primarily linear) but do differ in timing. The Euro and GFS are quicker, pushing the line through mostly during the afternoon, whereas the NAM is slower, pushing the line through the FA from late afternoon through the early evening. Timing will likely be ironed out as we near the event, but for now, it appears that the best threat for strong to severe storms (likely in the form of squall line) appears to be from the afternoon through the early evening. Apart from the severe weather threat, winds Sun afternoon look to be quite breezy with SSW winds increasing to 15- 20 MPH and gusts to 30-40+ MPH (strongest winds just ahead of the front and storms). The cold front ushers in drier and cooler weather Sun night with lows ranging from the upper 30s to lower 40s NW to the mid to upper 40s SE. Mostly sunny Sun night through Mon with highs Mon much cooler in the upper 50s over the Eastern Shore and low to mid 60s elsewhere. && .LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/... As of 330 PM EDT Friday... A southern stream system tracks through the Carolinas into far SE VA Tuesday into Wednesday bringing another chance of rain to the area. For now did not stray too far from the NBM which has chance PoPs Tuesday and Wednesday. A stronger cold front likely approaches and crosses the region late Wednesday and Thursday, bringing another chance of rainfall to the region. Cooler high pressure settles over the region Friday into next weekend. Temperatures start near to slightly above average on Tuesday and Wednesday with highs on Tuesday in the lower to upper 60s and around 70 on Wednesday. Much cooler, below average temperatures, in the wake of the front on Thursday and Friday with highs only in the 50s (potentially upper 40s NE). Thursday night and Friday night will potentially feature temperatures at or below freezing for much of the area. && .AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... As of 115 AM EDT Saturday... SKC through Saturday morning as a cold front stall across central North Carolina. The front will lift north across as a warm front Saturday afternoon. Clouds will increase and lower from south to north. MVFR conditions area expected for areas across central/southeast VA and northeast NC by the mid- afternoon. CIGs may lower to 300-500 ft after 00z Sunday over NC and southern VA. OUTLOOK: Flight restrictions likely beginning late Saturday night as low level moisture increases. Showers and thunderstorms expected on Sunday ahead of an approaching cold front from the west. && .MARINE... As of 355 PM EDT Friday... Late this aftn, a cold front was pushing through SE VA, while weak sfc high pressure was building into the OH valley. SW or W winds of 15-25 kt with a few gusts to 30 kt were occurring over the waters. Waves were 1-3 ft and seas were 2-5 ft. The cold front will push off the coast this evening, with weak high pressure building into and over the area tonight into Sat aftn. Winds will shift to the W then northerly and diminish this evening into Sat morning. SCAs are in effect until 7 pm or 10 pm this evening. A warm front lifts across the waters Sun, turning winds back to the S-SW. A stronger cold front then crosses the waters Sun night. Models have again slowed with the timing of the frontal passage, and the potential for additional Small Craft Advisory conditions has similarly shifted back into Sun aftn (pre-frontal S-SW winds), with post-frontal CAA Sun night through Mon morning. && .CLIMATE...
