.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure moves northeast and away from the area early this
morning. A cold front approaches from the west by tonight, then
weakens while crossing the region on Friday. High pressure
briefly builds in from the north on Saturday, with another
system affecting the local area Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 355 AM EDT Thursday...
The latest analysis indicates that the low pressure system responsible
for the heavy rain on Wed has pushed off to the NE of the
Delmarva coast, leaving a weak pressure gradient in its wake
over the local area. Fog has been widespread early this morning,
but VSBYs have been somewhat variable between 1/2SM and 2SM
with some spots down to 1/4SM. The general trend over the past
hr has been for the lower VSBYs to become more widespread and
have decided to hoist a Dense Fog Advisory for most of the area
through 9 am. Have left most of NE NC and all of the eastern
shore out for now but will monitor these areas if conditions
worsen. There are some higher clouds moving in from the SW and
this may allow VSBYs to improve towards sunrise in which case
the DFA could be cancelled earlier than 9am. Temperatures will
generally range from the upper 40s to lower 50s through sunrise
with some upper 40s over interior south central VA.
Low clouds and fog will dissipate through the mid morning hrs
but will see mid/high clouds from the SW move over the area by
midday ahead of the next system. An area of low pressure
develops over the Mississippi Valley this afternoon before
rapidly deepening as it moves into the Ohio Valley tonight. A
trailing cold front will approach from the W overnight.
This morning will be dry, although isolated to scattered showers
are expected after 18Z (highest PoPs in the piedmont). An
isolated tstm will be possible as well though nothing strong to
severe given weak shear and instability parameters. Warm
southerly flow will allow temps to rise into the mid to upper
70s for most (low to mid 70s along the Eastern Shore and upper
60s along coastal portions of the Eastern Shore). A few spots
may even have a chance at hitting 80F in the SE depending on
cloud cover. Warm tonight with SSW winds and a mainly dry
evening followed by increasing PoPs from the NW after midnight.
Lows tonight 60-65F. The cold front approaches the local area
Fri morning with PoPs increasing to 30-50% for the NW piedmont
and <30% east of RIC as precip will be dissipating while the
front continues to push east.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 410 AM EDT Thursday...
Will maintain ~20% poPs through the mid-late morning period on
Fri as the front continues to weaken while pushing into the
local area. SPC has NC counties in a Marginal Severe Risk given
some decent bulk shear values and some instability persisting
through the aftn. Farther N over most of the CWA, the aftn looks
mostly sunny and dry as dew pts fall off significantly (into
the 40s to lower 50s). Even in NE NC, the coverage is expected
to limited given a drying WSW flow so the threat is certainly
conditional at best. Even though the cold front passes Fri, it
will be a dewpoint front as opposed to a temp front and clearing
skies. Therefore, expect highs to rise into the low to mid 80s
for most (upper 70s to around 80F over the Eastern Shore). A
Climate section lists the record highs as they may be
challenged.
Clear skies and lower dew pts Fri night will allow temps to
drop into the mid 40s NW to the lower-mid 50s SE. Dry Sat with
highs in the mid 70s for most and upper 60s/around 70F over the
Eastern Shore and the immediate coast in SE VA and NE NC. Some
mid/high clouds spread back in from the SW late and have 20-30%
poPs reaching into south central VA after 21Z.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 410 AM EDT Thursday...
Only minimal changes to the medium range forecast have been
made with the models in fairly good agreement with the
increasing moisture continuing to spread N into the CWA as a
trough of low pressure lifts Ne from the TN Valley and drives a
warm front through the CWA. This system is initially not really
phased with a potent shortwave pushing E across the Great Lakes
so will keep PoPs Sat night capped in the 40-50% range. On
Sunday, as the sfc low intensifies while moving to the St
Lawrence Valley, a cold front will extend S all the way to the
deep south and will eventually cross the local area by late in
the day. Will have likely PoPs across most of the CWA at some
point on Sun, with PoPs diminishing Sun evening. Have also
mentioned chance for tstms Sun aftn over southern VA and NE NC
with the cold front. Cold front pushes through late Sun with dry
weather returning Mon into at least the 1st part of Tue. The
GFS brings moisture back in by Tue while the ECMWF keeps us dry.
Will have 20-30% for showers coming in late Tue into Wed per
the model blends.
Lows in the 50s Sat night, low 40s NW to upper 40s SE Sun night
behind the cold front, upper 30s to lower 40s Mon night, and mid to
upper 40s Tues and Wed nights. Highs low 70s N to the upper 70s
SE Sun, upper 50s NE to lower 60s SW Mon, 60-65F Tues, and
upper 60s to around 70F Wed.

.AVIATION /08Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 200 AM EDT Thursday...
Low pressure has moved off to the NE of the region, with light
flow and ample boundary layer moisture in place across the local
area. Some low clouds remain on the eastern shore, with areas of
dense fog now across most of the CWA W of Ches Bay. Generally,
widespread IFR-LIFR flight restrictions can be expected at the
main terminals through at least 12Z, probably lingering with low
clouds until ~13-15Z. Skies should become partly sunny for a few
hrs then with aftn buildup of cumulus as moisture increases from
the S. A few showers will be possible, especially well inland during
the mid to late aftn period and have included a "VCSH" group in
the TAF for RIC. Winds today will be from the SSW at around
10kt. Mainly VFR conditions with SSW winds increasing to
10-15kt later tonight into early Fri with bulk of shower
activity remaining W of the main terminals through 06Z/Fri.
OUTLOOK...
The front weakens as it moves east of the Appalachians on Fri
so only expecting isolated showers as skies become partly to
mostly sunny along with a breezy SW wind. Dry/VFR Sat as high
pressure builds in from the N, Showers and flight restrictions
are likely again late Sat night/Sun.

As of 410 AM EDT Thursday...
Marine Dense Fog advisory has been issued for all area coastal
waters north of the VA/NC border until 14z/10AM Thursday. Visibility
has been reduce to less than 1 NM. Fog is expected to dissipate
later this morning, but visibility may remain 1-3 NM into late
Thursday morning.
Winds over the area have come down and are S 5-10 kt this morning.
The southerly winds will increase to 10-15 kt on Thursday in between
high pressure to our east and low pressure lifting NNE across the
Ohio River Valley. That low is progged to track into the Northeast
U.S. by Friday as its associated (trailing) cold front nears the
waters. Winds become southwest and increase to 15-20 kt across the
Chesapeake Bay/rivers and 20-25 kt across our Atlantic Ocean coastal
zones by Friday morning. SCAs have been issued for all area coastal
waters from Thursday night through Friday evening. The cold front
will move off the coast by Friday evening with winds becoming W 10-
15 kt. Seas may remain elevated, around 5 ft, across our northern
ocean coastal zones into Friday night.
A weak area of high pressure will build into the area Friday night
and become centered over eastern VA by Saturday. Winds will be W 5-
10 kt north to E ~5 kt south.
