AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Wakefield VA 1149 AM EST Sat Mar 13 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure builds into the area from the north over the weekend. Low pressure slowly tracks across the region early next week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/... As of 1140 AM EST Saturday... Forecast largely on track at midday. Morning update was to lower dewpoint temps with drier air just aloft mixing down a bit more efficiently than modeled. Otherwise, a dry, pleasant afternoon ahead for the local area. Cold front is now well south across S NC into upstate SC. Behind the front, not quite as mild as the past several days, but still mild with highs in the low to mid 60s inland, cooler mid to upper 50s along the coast (except ~50 along the MD Atlantic coast). Partly to mostly cloudy (mid to high clouds) across the south, mostly sunny north. Previous discussion follows... As of 400 AM EST Saturday... Early this morning, a cold front has pushed south of the area into the Carolinas. Also, sfc high pressure was centered over srn Michigan. High and some mid level clouds were streaming into and across the area in the WNW flow aloft. Temps ranged from the upper 40s to the upper 50s, as NW or N winds were ushering drier air into the area. The sfc high will build ESE into and over the region today, bringing very dry air back into the area. Dew point temps are forecast to mix out into the teens and lower 20s for a good portion of the area this aftn. The return of very dry air and lack of any appreciable wetting from the light showers yesterday will lead to concerning fire weather parameters during the aftn when minimum RH values are forecast to fall into the upper teens and 20s. Fortunately, winds are not expected to be strong or too gusty, generally 5-10 kt with gusts ~15 kt. Highs today will warm into the lower to mid 60s inland/piedmont, with 50s expected near the coast and along the eastern shore. && .SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/... As of 400 AM EST Saturday... Dry weather continues for tonight through Mon morning, as weaker high pressure will be over the area through Sun morning, then stronger sfc high pressure will build down into the region later Sun aftn through Mon morning. Clear to partly cloudy tonight with lows ranging through the 30s to near 40. Sunny to partly sunny on Sun with highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s. Mostly clear to partly cloudy Sun night with lows ranging from the upper 20s to the upper 30s. Much cooler on Mon, with increasing clouds from WSW to ENE Mon aftn into Mon evening. Highs will only top out in the mid 40s to near 50. High pressure to the north will translate eastward Mon night with the flow turning to the E and SE after sunset, as the next area of low pressure and warm front nears the region from the west. Models are in generally good agreement that predominant p-type will be plain rain across the region, with a low potential for mixed precip along the northern tier of counties Mon night. Lows Mon night will range through the 30s. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... As of 400 AM EST Saturday... Another weak area of low pressure forms to our south on Tue which will result in chance to likely PoPs for showers Tue into Tue evening. High temps will range from the upper 40s and lower 50s N, to the upper 50s across portions of NE NC. Will have dry wx late Tue night and Wed, before low pressure translates from the Plains toward the Ohio Valley by Thu morning, with moisture spreading ENE into the local area Thu and lasting into early Fri. Highs in the mid 50s to mid 60s Wed, in the upper 50s to upper 60s Thu, and in the 50s Fri. && .AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... As of 1150 AM EST Saturday... VFR conditions across area terminals will prevail at all TAF sites this aftn and tonight into Sun morning, with sct-bkn mid to high clouds. Sfc high pressure builds down into and over the region tonight and Sunday. NE winds this aftn become light and variable tonight, eventually becoming S-SW tonight. OUTLOOK...VFR conditions expected Sun into Mon, as high pressure builds in from the north. Gusty winds of 15-20 kt with gusts to 25 kt (~30 kt KSBY) late morning Sun into Sun night. The next chance for pcpn and possible flight restrictions will be late Mon into Tue night, as weak low pressure crosses the region. && .MARINE... As of 1045 AM EST Saturday... Ended the Small Craft Advisories early as conditions continue to improve. Will be coordinating with neighboring offices this afternoon for potential SCA headlines tomorrow evening. Previous discussion... High pressure builds across the region this afternoon into tonight, and then slides offshore Sunday. Another cold front crosses the coast Sunday night with a potential for a stronger period of CAA. This will bring the next round of SCA conditions. A N wind of 15- 25kt with gusts to 30kt is expected for much of the area, and some gusts to 35 kt are possible, but the probability is not high enough to warrant a gale watch at this time. Seas build to 4-6ft, with 3- 4ft waves in the Bay. High pressure builds in from the north Monday. Low pressure moves off across the Carolina coast late Monday night into Tuesday, before weak high pressure returns Wednesday. && .FIRE WEATHER... As of 1145 AM EST Saturday... A cold front has pushed well south of the area this morning, with northerly winds generally 5-10 mph inland and 10-15 mph near the coast expected during today. Drier air has mixed down behind the front, and will drop aftn min RH values into the low to mid teens north, upper teens to mid 20s southern VA... and to the mid to upper 20s% near the coast in SE VA and over all of NE NC. Concern is increasing for adverse fire weather conditions worsening Sunday. High pressure builds south over the region tonight and Sunday, with diurnal mixing likely bringing gusty W-SW winds.
