AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure builds into the area through midday Saturday. Low
pressure will track along the coast Saturday night through
early Sunday bringing rain and snow.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 950 PM EST Friday...

Late evening wx analysis shows the cold front now approaching SE
VA. All pcpn has moved offshore. Temperatures are generally in
the 40-45F range across the FA. However, have seen a rapid
drop in dew points following the FROPA (RIC is down to ~20F
while the dew point is still 44F at the Wakefield airport as of
9 PM). The front is expected to push through the area this
during the next few hours. Expecting some clearing overnight,
but SCT to BKN mid and high clouds likely linger over a good
portion of the area. The colder/drier air will eventually
filter into the area overnight with dewpoints dropping into the
20s over SE portions of the area by morning. Overnight low
temps range from the upper 20s to lower 30s.

High pressure builds in from the south on Saturday. Plenty of
sunshine early with clouds increasing in the afternoon. High temps
generally in the lower 50s.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 400 PM EST Friday...

Uncertainty remains regarding the Saturday night/Sunday system.
Models have continued the NW trend with at least some form of precip
looking very likely for the entire CWA with winter weather likely
for at least the NW half of the CWA. The general trend has been for
a faster system with precip beginning as early as Saturday evening
in the SW. Precip will likely start as light rain with temps still
in the 40s late Saturday. However, colder air aloft and increasing
precip rates as an area of strong WAA approaches from S to N will
cool temps into the low 30s rather quickly. Temps will remain
marginal through the event in the 32-34F range with the coldest
temps under areas of heaviest precip. Precip spreads from SW to NE
through the night with heavy snow possible in the NW and heavy rain
possible in the SE.

The wildcard factor for this event is where a band of strong Fgen
sets up. This feature has shown up on all of the CAMs for SE VA/NE
NC. It is especially strong on the NAM. Although the NAM is likely
too amplified, confidence is high in some level of Fgen banding in
SE VA. This will lead to an enhanced area of lift and snowfall rates
NW of the band. Locations under the Fgen band will have the best
chance of sleet mixing in which will greatly cut off total snowfall
amounts, leading to a high bust potential. Areas SE of the Fgen band
will likely transition to all rain as surface temps and mid level
temps will be above freezing. If the Fgen band sets up further SE,
the heaviest snow will shift SE and vice versa.

GFS ensembles (midday run) have once again increased total snowfall
(10:1 ratio though so likely too high given marginal surface temps
and WAA) with the prob for >= 3 inches of snow >70% for the NW
2/3rds of the CWA with a bullseye of 80-90% over Richmond. It even
has a 40-60% prob for >= 6 inches in a WSW to ENE oriented band from
Amelia to Wicomico (and including Richmond). However, this is
assuming a 10:1 ration which is too high for this event. A more
realistic ratio is 5-7:1 SE and 7-9:1 NW. Considering the lower snow
ratios as well as the impacts from compaction (due to heavy wet
snow) as well as surface temps above freezing at the start of the
event, taking 2/3rds of the ensemble snowfall is a more realistic
approach. This would place the heaviest band in the 4+ inch range
instead of the 6+ inch range. Where this band sets up (just to the
NW of the greatest Fgen) will be the location most likely to reach
warning criteria. The NAM has been more amplified with the Fgen band
and rain/snow line further inland versus the GFS and GFS ensembles
which keep the band further S.

For now, have opted to issue a Winter Storm Watch for the NW 1/2 of
the CWA due to the potential for up to 4 inches or more of snow just
NW of where the Fgen band sets up. Other locations not included in
the watch will likely need a Winter Weather Advisory in later
updates as details regarding the rain/snow line become more clear.

All precip moves out quickly by late morning/early afternoon with
some partial clearing possible in the late afternoon, especially in
the piedmont. Therefore, have highs in the low to mid 40s for most
with upper 30s over the Eastern Shore. Total QPF of 0.75-1.00 inches
possible for most of the CWA. Cold temps return Sunday night as high
pressure moves in with lows in the upper teens NW to the mid to
upper 20s SE. Dry Monday with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 355 AM EST Saturday...

On Tuesday a low pressure system is expected to pass by to the north
and drag a weak cold front across the area. Chance pops are in
for mainly the 2nd half of Tuesday lingering into the late
evening over the eastern shore. Precip with this system should
be in the form of rain (although a brief mix is possible in the
NW at the onset). Warm temps on Tuesday with highs ranging from
near 50 NW to mid and upper 50s SE. Low temps Tuesday night
near 30 inland and mid and upper 30s SE. High pressure builds in
from the NW on Wednesday with cooler temps expected. Highs
range from the low 40s N/NW to upper 40s SE. Overnight lows
range from the mid 20s to lower 30s.

A low pressure system originating out of the deep south will
impact the area towards the end of the week. Still significant
timing differences with the GFS much faster than the ECMWF.
Also, the models continue to struggle with the placement of an
arctic airmass spilling into the Midwest, basically placing the
Mid-Atlantic in a region between an arctic airmass to the W, and
a warm moist airmass off the coast. Continued with a broad
period of chance pops for both Thursday and Friday to account
for the differences. Some wintry precip is possible with this
system.

.AVIATION /09Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 1245 AM EST Saturday...

High pressure is centered over the Southeast Conus as of 06z,
with low pressure located N of the Great Lakes. SCT-BKN cirrus
are streaming over the region, with a light westerly wind. High
pressure slides off the coast today as low pressure approaches
from the SW. Cirrus should thicken during the aftn, with the
wind gradually becoming SSW 5-10kt, the SE toward 00z. Light
rain is expected to approach from the WSW from 00-03z this
evening at RIC/PHF/ORF/ECG with cigs lowering to 5-10kft. Pcpn
overspreads RIC/PHF/ORF/ECG from 03-06z, but mainly after 06z
for SBY. A period of snow is expected from RIC-SBY later tonight
as the pcpn intensity increases and pulls cooler air to the
surface. A rain/snow mix is possible at PHF, with mainly rain at
ORF/ECG. Cigs fall to MVFR toward 06z tonight, with IFR cigs
developing after 06z tonight. IFR/LIFR vsby is expected in snow,
and moderate to heavy rain will likely produce periods of IFR
vsby.

Low pressure is expected to move off the SE VA/NE NC coast
around 12z Sunday, and then farther offshore by Sunday aftn.
Snow will change to rain at RIC and SBY, with rain ending during

crosses the region Tuesday, with another area of low pressure
approaching from the WSW Wednesday.

.MARINE...
As of 355 AM EST Saturday...

High pressure centered across the Southeast Conus early this
morning will slide off the Southeast coast today. Low pressure
approaches from the SW this evening, and tracks across the area
late tonight and off the SE VA/NE NC coast Sunday morning. This
low will strengthen as it crosses the coast, and especially as
it moves offshore later in the aftn. The wind will be WSW 5-10kt
today, and then become SSE this evening. The wind will become
NE later tonight, and then become N to NW as the low moves off
the coast Sunday. Overall, wind speeds are expected to be
20-25kt with gusts to 30kt, with 15-20kt with gusts to 25kt for
the upper rivers. Given that this system is southern stream in
origin, it will have minimal cold air to work with, so CAA and
mixing are limited. Therefore, gale conditions are not
anticipated at this time, but a brief period (less than 3hrs) of
gusts to 35kt are possible with the strongest pressure rises
for the ocean N of Cape Charles. SCAs have been raised beginning
late tonight and continuing into Sunday. Seas build to 5- 7ft,
with 3-4ft waves in the Bay. A secondary CAA surge is possible
Sunday night as high pressure builds into the region. High
pressure prevails by Monday. Another cold front crosses the
region by Tuesday.
