AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Wakefield VA 1256 AM EST Tue Dec 21 2021 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will remain over the area tonight and provide dry weather. On Tuesday, low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico will lift northeast and off the Atlantic coast Tuesday night into Wednesday afternoon. High pressure will build into and over the region for late Wednesday through Thursday, then slides off the coast Thursday night and Friday. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 7 AM THIS MORNING/... As of 730 PM EST Monday... The latest wx analysis places ~0126mb sfc high pressure from Delaware to northeast NC early this evening, with a westerly flow aloft around the northern extent of an upper level ridge centered over the Caribbean/western Atlantic. There are some high clouds over the region, with a small zone of BKN-OVC stratocumulus over southside Hampton Roads. Temperatures have dropped off rapidly this evening in the dry airmass w/ little to no wind across most of the region. Already seeing many locations falling into the upper 20s/lower 30s and even though temperatures will tend to become nearly steady or only fall a few more degrees overnight, this still results in a lowering of overnight mins for most areas. Expect lows to range from the lower-mid 20s in the piedmont with mid 20s to around 30F for most of the CWA, and locally in the mid 30s at the immediate coast in SE VA and NE NC. Skies will average out partly cloudy south and mostly clear north. && .SHORT TERM /7 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY/... As of 350 PM EST Monday... High pressure will still wedge southward into the area to start the day on Tue, as low pressure tracks ENE into Florida from the Gulf of Mexico. Not quite as cold on Tue with the sky becoming mostly cloudy or cloudy from N to S through the day. In general, it will become mostly cloudy across southern VA and NE NC during the late morning, and into the rest of the region by aftn. Highs will be generally in the mid to upper 40s, with lower 50s across NE NC. The 12Z models have come into somewhat better agreement regarding the track of the aforementioned low pressure system, with the NAM actually showing the strongest low. Will show increasing PoPs from the SSE Tue aftn/evening, then spreading north and west into Tue night. Looking like there will be a fairly sharp cutoff to the rainfall across the NW counties, due to extensive low/mid level dry air. Will confine most of the QPF to SE VA and NE NC counties for this event. QPF between 0.25" and 0.75" inch will be possible again over these counties. PoPs decrease quickly after sunrise Wed morning, as the low pulls away to the NE. High temps on Wed will be in the upper 40s to mid 50s, with the sky becoming partly or mostly sunny Wed aftn. High pressure will build into and over the region for Wed night and Thu. Lows will range through the 20s into the lower 30s Wed night. Sunny or mostly sunny on Thu with highs in the mid to upper 40s. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/... As of 400 PM EST Monday... A warm front followed by a cold front will affect the region Fri night and Sat, then another warm front could affect the area late Mon into Mon night. These fronts will bring slight or sml chance for rain showers. Otherwise, high pressure will provide dry weather. The warmest day looks to be Christmas day with high temps in the lower to mid 60s. High temps the other days will be mainly in the 50s. && .AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... As of 1255 AM EST Tuesday... 1024mb high pressure is centered over the region as of 06z. Meanwhile, low pressure is developing in the central Gulf of Mexico, and this low is expected to track ENE across FL today, then NE off the Carolina coast tonight. Mainly high clouds across the region, with the exception of a 6kft cloud deck over ECG. The wind is calm for most of the area, and light N along the coast of SE VA/NE NC. Clouds are expected to increase today, with cigs steadily lowering, especially by afternoon and evening. MVFR cigs are expected to develop by late afternoon/evening, with IFR cigs possible by tonight, especially toward the coast. Intermittent light rain is possible at ORF/ECG this afternoon, which will become steady by late afternoon/early evening, before tapering off later tonight. Rain is likely at PHF tonight, with chances tapering to 40-50% at SBY and 30-40% at RIC. The wind will remain light, generally out of the NE by this afternoon and evening, then becoming NW later tonight. High pressure builds into the area Wednesday into Thursday, then slides offshore Friday into Christmas Day with mainly VFR conditions expected. && .MARINE... As of 330 PM EST Monday... A ~1028mb high pressure was centered over the northern Ches Bay this afternoon resulting in light NNE/NE winds 5-10 kt over the Ches Bay and northern coastal waters. However, given the position of the high, the pressure gradient remains along the far southern coastal waters where winds are 10-20 kt. Nevertheless, as the high slowly drifts E this afternoon, winds will diminish. SCAs remain in effect until 7 PM for the southernmost coastal waters due to 4-6 ft seas. Winds will continue to diminish this afternoon to 5-10 kt over all waters, eventually shifting to W/NW this evening/overnight tonight. Seas this afternoon ranged from 3-4 ft N to 4-6 ft S, eventually subsiding to 3-4 ft over all coastal waters tonight. Waves in the Bay are 1-2 ft. High pressure remains centered over the local waters through Tues. Meanwhile, an area of low pressure will move NE out of the Gulf of Mexico and over the Southeast coastal waters Tues-early Wed, remaining offshore. As a response, winds become N Tues morning before becoming NE and increasing to 10-15 kt across the southern coastal waters Tues afternoon. Winds become N/NNW 15-20 kt (with gusts to 25 kt over the southern coastal waters) Tues night/early Wed. Winds become NW 15-25 kt Wed-Wed night before diminishing late Wed night. Given 15-25 kt winds and seas of 5-6 ft, a period of SCAs are likely from Tues night-Wed night.
