What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Wakefield, VA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Oct 17, 10:41 PM EDT, 2 hours 34 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Oct 17, 10:41 PM EDT, 2 hours 34 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Wakefield VA
1041 PM EDT Sun Oct 17 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure builds into the area through midweek, bringing
more seasonable temperatures and dry conditions. A cold front
crosses the region later Thursday into Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY MORNING/...
As of 1020 PM EDT Sunday...

Latest analysis reveals ~1024mb sfc high pressure over the
western Gulf coast extending NE across the Mid-south. Aloft, an
upper shear axis and weak shortwave trough is crossing the
Delmarva area this evening, and will push offshore overnight.
Upper level ridging will build in late tonight and into the day
on Monday. Cool, dry airmass and decoupling winds away from the
immediate coast have allowed for temps to fall off quickly,
with lows already in the 40s over much of the piedmont into
central VA and interior NE NC as of 02z. Early morning lows are
forecast to be in the low 40s in the VA Piedmont (possibly
upper 30s in the typically cooler spots such as LKU), low to mid
40s in most other inland locations, and mid 40s-low 50s near
the immediate coast.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 245 PM EDT Sunday...

The dry/mainly sunny wx will continue through Wednesday, but with a
noticeable warming trend through the short term period. NW flow
aloft is expected to continue through Tuesday as the upper trough
slowly pulls away to the NE (but lingers INVOF Atlantic Canada). The
upper level flow should finally flatten out by late Wed. At the
surface, high pressure will continue to slowly build toward the
area, and is progged to become centered just to our WSW by late Mon
night into Tuesday. The high will then shift to a position off the
Carolina coast by Wed, allowing for the low-level flow to shift to
the SW. Forecast highs on Mon are in the upper 60s (Lower Eastern
Shore/Northern Neck) to around 70F for the remainder of the area.
Cool again Mon night with lows a touch cooler compared to what is
expected tonight due to high pressure becoming centered further
east. Highs are expected to reach the lower 70s on Tuesday, and mid
to perhaps locally upper 70s on Wednesday. Lows mainly in the 40s
Tue night, and in the upper 40s-mid 50s Wed night.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 245 PM EDT Sunday...

An upper level ridge extending over the Great Lakes and into
Canada builds mid week, allowing warmer temperatures in the mid-
upper 70s in the CWA on Thursday. A shortwave passes to our
north Thurs night- Friday morning, bringing with it a cold
front. There's a slight chance for SCT showers associated with
the FROPA Friday morning, but precip totals should remain low
thanks to a lack of moisture. There is a slight chance of precip
for eastern portions of the CWA on Friday night into Saturday
as well with the potential development of a surface low off the
coast. Temps will be in the low-mid 70s for most of the area on
Friday, with slightly warmer temperatures in the NC counties.
Min temps Friday night will be in the upper 40s-mid 50s. Cooler
temperatures in the 60s return for the weekend. Lows will be in
the 40s Saturday and Sunday night for most of the area.

&&

.AVIATION /03Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 735 PM EDT Sunday...

VFR conditions across area terminals this evening, with VFR
conditions expected through the 00z TAF period. NW winds will
continue to diminish this evening, and will be light/variable
overnight under a mainly clear sky. Winds increase again late
Monday morning, and become gusty for all terminals with gusts
~20-25 kt.

Outlook... VFR conditions persist Monday night through midweek.
Next chance for Sub-VFR conditions come with an approaching
frontal boundary for later Thu/Thu night, with a low shower
chance during this same period.

&&

.MARINE...
As of 210 PM EDT Sunday...

Deep layered NW flow will keep winds over most of the local
waters elevated into Tue. A bit of a decrease in speeds expected
this evening/tonight. Secondary trough to cross the region early
Mon to be followed by another uptick in speeds until late Mon.
Wind probs show the spikes in speeds (generally better than
40-60%) through Tue morning. Sfc high pressure settles over the
mid-Atlantic waters Tue into Wed providing quiet marine wx
conditions by that timeframe. SW winds ahead of the next
approaching cold front may increase Thu.

SCAs will be extended on the rivers/sound until late Mon due to
second surge expected (Mon). OTW...SCAs to remain as they are
for all other areas.
