AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Wakefield VA 1246 PM EST Thu Jan 21 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Weak low pressure tracks across the Carolinas today. Another dry frontal passage will usher in cold Canadian high pressure from the northwest over the upcoming weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 1100 AM EST Thursday... Latest analysis reveals 1018+mb sfc high pressure in place offshore of the Mid-Atlantic/southeast coast this morning. To the northwest, a potent area of low pressure (~985mb) over southeastern Ontario. Aloft, mid to upper level ridging over the Gulf coast continues to slowly dampen in response to deep upper trough over the upper midwest/Great Lakes dropping southeast. Forecast is on track this morning with diminishing radar returns noted mostly south of the VA/NC border. Dry air has limited precip reaching the surface over most of the area but there were a few reports of light rain this morning over NE NC. Farther north, look for partly to mostly cloudy conditions to start and a dry day. All zones clear out for the afternoon and evening in subsidence behind the departing wave (aided by quasi-downslope flow aloft). Highs in the low to mid 50s. Clearing and not quite as cool tomorrow night with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s. && .SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... As of 320 AM EST Thursday... Models continue to trend farther south with Friday system. this should yield some increasing mid to high clouds, with high temps in the upper 40s and low 50s under a partly to mostly cloudy sky. Aforementioned system to the north slowly pushes east into Quebec by late Friday, with the attendant sfc (dry) frontal passage coming Friday night. Clearing sky into Sat morning post-frontal will allow overnight low temps to fall into the mid 20s for the Eastern Shore and along/west of I-95 with upper 20s and low 30s elsewhere. High pressure builds into the region on Saturday on gusty NW winds. High temps struggle to hit the 40 degree mark across the north with low and mid 40s to the south. && .LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... As of 320 AM EST Thursday... Not too much change overall with the systems next week, so only limited changes made at this time. The general consensus for a cold dry pattern Sat night and Sunday remains, followed by more unsettled conditions for the remainder of the period. Beginning Sat night, the 00Z/21 models all depict strong sfc high pressure centered over the Great Lakes/upper OH Valley, moving SE across the local area by Sunday morning. This will bring a mostly clear/cold night with lows mainly 20-25F inland and in the upper 20s/around 30F near the coast in SE VA/NE NC (some upper teens will be possible in the Piedmont and MD eastern shore). Sunny to start Sunday, with a partly cloudy aftn with highs mostly in the lower to mid 40s as the sfc high slowly weakens over the local area and mid/high clouds approach from the W ahead of the next system. Models are coalescing a little bit from Sun night through Tue, but some fairly significant differences remain. The GFS remains more progressive with the frontal wave and a bit colder, with the ECMWF a bit more amplified and potent with the low, and hence slower and a bit N-NW in reference to GFS and CMC, respectively. For the record, the GFS Parallel splits the difference and does indicate potential for some wintry precip across the northern 1/3 of the area late Monday night/Tue morning before tapering off. While forecast confidence is high enough for likely PoPs Mon into Mon night, confidence is much lower regarding exact timing, as well as p-type issues at the onset on the precipitation Mon morning as well as Mon night into Tue (at least over the N). Overall, the operational models as well as the ensembles continue to suggest little to no chance for wintry precip across the much of the CWA aside from perhaps at the onset early Mon with typical wetbulbing issues. Farther N, the latest EPS (Euro Ensemble) from 00z/21 now shows 50% or greater chance for at least 1" of snow now across our very far northern tier of counties, with some lower end chances for light accumulations as far south as RIC metro. Given all of the above, have made only some minor tweaks to the going forecast, pushing timing a bit farther back, with little or no pcpn prior to sunrise Monday morning. Likely Pops then ensue later Mon morning/aftn, before diminishing from W to E Early Tue morning). P-type will be mainly snow or rain/snow at the onset early Mon, then mainly just rain Mon aftn/Mon evening, with some mix back to snow possible again across the N into early Tue morning. For temps, lows Sun night upr 20s- lwr 30s, but with steady or rising temps overnight after a rapid drop off Sun evening. Highs Mon in the 40s (except lower 50s SE). Lows in the 30s to lower 40s Mon night, highs Tue in the 40s N to lower 50s S. PoPs avg 50-60% Mon aftn through Tue morning. Looking ahead a bit farther into next week, latest trends are for drying conditions from the N later Tue and Wed, but given a progressive pattern, confidence in this is also fairly low. GFS develops a coastal system by Wed night/Thu, while the ECMWF/CMC/UKMET are each a bit more suppressed and progressive with the sfc low. Will just show increasing clouds late Wed but keep it dry for now. && .AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... As of 1245 PM EST Thursday... VFR conditions are expected to prevail through the 18z TAF period. Lingering mid level stratus clouds across the southeastern terminals are forecast to clear by mid afternoon. SW winds generally 5-10 kt, slightly higher near the coast, will continue through tonight before becoming westerly Friday morning. Outlook: High pressure builds in from the NW tonight through the weekend. Another dry front crosses tomorrow night, with gusty NW winds post-frontal for Saturday, highest along the coast. Low pressure is expected to cross the region early next week, with periods of rain Monday into late Monday night/early Tue. Sub-VFR conditions will be possible as early as late Sunday evening. && .MARINE... As of 300 AM EST Thursday... Early morning wx analysis shows weak high pressure centered over the waters with a fairly strong area of low pressure just north of Lake Superior. With the high overhead, winds are variable around 5 kt. Seas are 2-3 ft with ~1 ft waves. The weak high shifts south/east this morning and winds are expected to become SW 12-15 kt by sunrise. The pressure gradient tightens a bit today as the aforementioned low tracks eastward across Ontario/Quebec. As a result, SW winds are progged to increase to 15- 20 kt (highest over the ocean). Seas increase to 2-4 ft today (highest N) with 2-3 ft waves. However, will likely see a few gusts to ~20 kt across the Ches Bay (especially at elevated sites N of New Pt Comfort) with a few gusts to 25 kt across the nrn coastal waters (mainly closer to 20 nm offshore). Gusts are not expected to be frequent enough to warrant a headline, so no SCAs have been issued. Local wind probabilities for sustained 18 kt winds are only 20-40% across the mid/upper bay. Winds turn to the W and diminish a bit tonight/Fri AM before another cold front moves off the coast Friday with decent CAA in its wake Fri night/Sat AM. Winds turn to the NW behind the front and sustained wind speeds are progged to increase to 20-25 kt by 12z Sat. Wind speeds will average 20-25 kt through much of Sat before slowly diminishing Sat night. Seas will build to 3-6 ft by late Saturday, with waves building to 2-4 ft. SCAs will be needed for at least the bay/ocean Fri night-Sat (and potentially Sat night). Still too early for headlines with this forecast package. Sub-SCA conditions return by Sunday as high pressure builds in from the NW. Sub-SCA conditions last through at least part of Mon night. Low pressure is progged to track across the Mid-Atlantic from Mon night-Tue with another potential low pressure system late next week.
