Mainly dry conditions are expected today and Wednesday, but a
wintry mix of precipitation is likely for much of the region
late Wednesday night through Thursday. Dry and cool weather will
prevail this weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1035 AM EST Tuesday...
The latest satellite imagery and surface analysis shows an
initial frontal boundary pushing offshore, with a secondary
front approaching from the NW. Mostly cloudy to overcast inland,
with some clearing occurring toward the coast. There is a large
temperature gradient with upper 30s NW, to mid 60s SE. All
rain has now pushed offshore. For this afternoon, expect drying
conditions as sfc low pressure moves to southern New england by
late this morning and aftn. Partly cloudy skies develop by late
morning or early aftn. A breezy W/SW wind will allow the low
level CAD to gradually get scoured out across the interior. Will
have high ranging from the mid 50s W and NW to the mid to upper
60s SE.
Low pressure tracks through nrn New England Tue w/ a cold front
pushing to/off the coast this evening. Mostly clear tonight
with temperatures dropping off rapidly overnight. Lows are
expected to range from the lower-mid 20s NW to the lower 30s SE.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 345 AM EST Tuesday...
Strong high pressure settles over the upper OH Valley on Wed,
and slowly builds E to central NY state Wed night/early Thu.
Meanwhile, sfc low pressure organizes over the central/western
Gulf of Mexico Wed then heads NE Wed night. Starting out mainly
sunny Wed then increasing clouds. Very dry Wed with dew pts in
the teens to lower 20s, with highs in the u30s at the coast to
the lower to mid 40s over most of central and southern VA and interior
NE NC.
Have issued a Winter Storm Watch for most of the Piedmont
counties from 06Z/Thu through 06Z/Fri in the areas of highest
confidence at seeing warning criteria ice and/or ice/snow
amounts. The strong sfc high (~1035mb) will continue to keep a
supply of very cold/dry air from the N on Thu (at least through
the morning hrs). As the high shifts NE to the St Lawrence
Valley/northern New England by late Thu/Thu night, there
appears to be just enough low level warming from the I-95
corridor and pt E to have the p-type change over to plain rain.
For sfc temperatures on Thu, followed close to the NAM/GFS sfc
wet bulb values which clearly depict the typical delayed warming
that occurs in these type of patterns (i.e temperatures staying
at or below 32F in the Piedmont for several hrs longer than
what a model blend will show). where the uncertainty lies is
probably more in exact p-type rather than temperatures in the
low levels. The 00Z/16 GFS and to a lesser extent the ECWMF are
hitting snow amounts harder across our northern zones for a good
portion of the day thu, while the 00Z NAM points to almost
exclusively an ice scenario with a fast warming of the airmass
above 900mb. A blend of these scenarios yields up to 2-3" of
snowfall across the far N/NW zones (most of this Thu morning),
with 0.25" to nearly 0.50" of ice across most of the AKQ
Piedmont counties. For now, have enough of the NAM solution
incorporated to keep snow/sleet amounts around 1" or less except
over the far northern tier. The watch has been issued for areas
of high confidence, with an expansion to the E certainly
possible w/ subsequent shifts as current forecast has 0.10" to
nearly 0/25" of ice into metro RIC and 1-2" of snow into the MD
eastern shore. Highs Thu will be 31-33F in the Piedmont, mid 30s
metro RIC, with 50s across the far SE. Mainly rain Thu night
except in the far W/ NW. A cold front crosses the region late
Thu night w/ low temps ranging from around 30F NW to the m40s
SE.

Overall, not much change to the long term forecast w/ this
issuance. Cold front exits the coast Fri morning to be followed
by drying and colder wx into the weekend. With the upper trough
still not crossing the area until later Fri, will hang onto
chance to likely PoPs Fri morning, with chance PoPs lingering
along the coast in SE VA and NE NC through the aftn. Highs Fri
from the low to mid 40s NW to the low-mid 50s far SE. Lows Fri
night from around 20F NW to the upper 20s SE. High pressure
reaches the local area from the W late Sat then exits to the E
Sun night. Cold Sat with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s.
Diminishing winds Sat night will make for a cold night under
clear skies with lows ranging from the mid teens NW Piedmont to
the mid-upper 20s far SE. Moderation begins Sun as winds become
SSW (highs mostly in the mid to upper 40s). A cold front
approaches from the W Sun night then crosses the FA Mon (though
the exact timing of that frontal passage uncertain attm). Dry wx
Sat-Sun then an increased prob for SHRAs Mon. Lows Sun night in
the u20s-l30s. Highs Mon in the u40s- l50s N to the m-u50s in
NE NC.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 1230 PM EST Tuesday...
Gradually improving conditions are expected this afternoon as
low-clouds slowly scatter. MVFR conditions are expected at
RIC/SBY through 20-21z along with a WSW wind of 10-15kt with
gusts to ~20kt at all sites. The wind will shift to NW then N
tonight with speeds of 8-12kt as high pressure builds into the
area under a clear sky. Sunny Wednesday with a light NNE wind.
Conditions are expected to deteriorate late Wednesday night all
as another low pressure system from the SW tracks across the FA.
Expect widespread flight restrictions all day Thursday into
Thursday night. Mainly rain expected at ORF/PHF/ECG (a brief
mix possible at the onset early Thursday). SBY will have a
longer period Thursday morning with a potential mixed p-type
and RIC could see SN/IP changing to freezing rain before a
transition to all rain later Thursday. Another wave could bring
another round of rain Thursday night, and this could be freezing
rain at RIC. Conditions gradually improve Friday with high
pressure building in for the weekend.

As of 645 AM EST Tuesday...
A pair of low pressure systems, one over the Appalachians and
another one over the Mid-Atlantic, will race to the NE this
morning and deepen as they reach the northeast. Southerly winds
will increase to 15-20 kts over the Bay and Currituck Sound, and
20-25 kts over the coastal waters. Waves in the bay will build
to 2-3 ft and seas will build o 4-7 ft. Winds will subside some
this afternoon but then increase again tonight and turn to the
W/NW with a frontal passage. Waves in the bay 2-4 ft and seas
4-6 ft. After a brief respite on Wednesday with high pressure
building in from the north, a system originating from the Gulf
will impact the region Thursday into Friday resulting in
additional SCA winds/seas.
As for headlines, elected to extend the SCA for the bay until
12Z Wednesday morning even though there will be a lull in the
winds this afternoon before they pick back up again this
evening. The lower James and Currituck sound SCA goes until 21Z
today. The middle and upper coastal waters run through Wednesday
morning, and the southern coastal waters run through early
Wednesday afternoon.
