.SYNOPSIS...
Cold high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south
will continue to bring freezing rain or freezing drizzle to much
of the area through tonight. Additional storm systems will
bring mainly rain to the area on Sunday and again Monday night
into Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
As of 340 PM EST Saturday...
Late afternoon surface analysis continues to show Arctic high
pressure centered from the Canadian Prairies to North Dakota. This
high is ridging into the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Carolinas and
is supplying a feed of cold dry air into the region from the north.
Aloft, a cold upper low remains near the US-Canada border with a
broad upper trough over central/wrn portions of the CONUS. SW flow
aloft prevails from the wrn Gulf coast to the ern CONUS, with
several upper disturbances embedded in the flow from TX to the Mid-
Atlantic. One of these disturbances is crossing the area this aftn
as warm/moist air overrides colder air near the surface. Light to
moderate pcpn is ongoing across the area with temperatures still in
the 30-32F range along and west of a EMV-FYJ-CGE line. Will keep
the placement of Ice Storm Warnings and Winter Weather
Advisories as is, and will extend them through 15z/10 AM Sunday
to account for lingering freezing drizzle through the night. On
average, 0.25-0.40" of radial ice accretion has been measured in
the warning area.
Regional radar mosaic shows that pcpn is still over much of the
area, but starting to see a noticeable decrease in pcpn intensity
across south-central VA. Numerous trees have been downed across
much of the warning area, especially along and west of I-95.
While temperatures have risen to 31-33F across most areas in the
warning (except for the far NW), ice is still accumulating on
trees and powerlines. We saw this here at the office earlier
when the sfc temperature was 32-33F but icing was visible on
tree tops/powerlines. Light to moderate RA/FZRA will taper to
drizzle/freezing drizzle over the majority of the area by mid
to late evening, with DZ/FZDZ continuing through tonight.
Temperatures will drop a couple degrees tonight, and that is the
reasoning behind keeping a buffer zone of advisories in areas
where temperatures are a bit above freezing at this hour.
Additional ice accums from now through tonight will generally be
0.05-0.20" in most of the warning area, with an additional
light glaze to perhaps 0.05-0.10" possible in the advisory area
(Northampton NC to Wicomico MD). Expect more tree damage/downed
power lines through tonight with the additional ice accrual.
Again, it is important to emphasize that the combination of any
new icing and snow/ice that is already on the trees will make
for a very dangerous situation in the warning area. This is
already happening as widespread downed trees are resulting in
numerous power outages/road closures.

Lingering drizzle or freezing drizzle should taper off by the middle
to latter part of Sunday morning and temperatures should finally

areas of low pressure track near or across the region. The first of
these systems is expected to track just offshore of the area late
tomorrow through early Monday morning. Expect a period of light to
moderate rain (best chances/highest QPF across SE VA/NE NC) from Sun
aftn-early Mon AM. Areas north and west of a FVX-SBY line should
only see 0.10" of rain at most (and could remain dry during the Sun
PM-Mon AM period). Will have chc PoPs across the NW increasing to 80-
90% across far SE VA/NE NC prior to 06z, then lowering PoPs
through 12z Mon. Rainfall totals will likely average around
0.50" across far SE VA/NE NC. With the snow/ice on the ground,
temperatures will only rise into the upper 30s in most areas on
Sun (low 40s across the far SE). Lows Sun night generally in the
33-40F range. Monday doesn't look like a complete washout but
cannot rule out some light rain during the day. PoPs from 15% SE
to 30% NW. Highs Mon range from the upper 30s NW to mid/upper
40s SE.
Both the ECMWF and GFS have continued to show a warmer solution for
the storm system on Tuesday. The storm track is looking to be right
over our area, which would mean all rain Monday night into Tuesday.
High temps on Tue will likely reach the mid 40s-low 50s from central
VA to the Lower Ern Shore, and upper 50s to low 60s for most of SE
VA and NE NC. Widespread rain is more likely during the morning
hours on Tuesday with drying conditions for the afternoon.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 200 PM EST Saturday...
After a brief respite on Wednesday with high pressure in control, a
couple of systems both originating in the deep south will impact the
area on Thursday and Friday. The first system is forecast to cut
across the far SE portion of our area early on Thursday, and with
high pressure to the north wedging in cooler air, the possibility
exists for some mixed precip inland, likely along and west of I-95.
The second system rides up the Appalachian spine late Thursday into
early Friday, dragging a cold front across the area Friday morning
into the early afternoon. Mostly rain is expected with this system.
High pressure and drier conditions expected for the weekend.
Generally below normal temps expected outside of Thursday into
Friday where temps will be above normal ahead of the cold front.

.AVIATION /00Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 655 PM EST Saturday...
Poor flying conditions expected for the entire 00Z TAF period.
IFR/LIFR ceilings will persist. Freezing Rain and Rain will
taper off to drizzle/light rain and freezing drizzle inland
later this evening into early Sunday morning, but could still
produce vsby restrictions of 2-4sm. The wind will be out of the
north through the period 5-10 kts at RIC/SBY and 10-15 kts at
PHF/ORF/ECG.
Poor flying conditions will persist Sunday night and Monday as
another system impacts the region Sunday, and yet another
system late Monday into early Tuesday. Some improvement in
flying conditions is finally expected during the latter half of
Tuesday into Wednesday. Another low pressure system approaches
from the SW Thursday.

Weak lo pres was located off the VA Capes attm w/ sfc hi pres INVOF
nrn New England. NNE winds 15-25 kt will remain persistent through
tonight into Sun...though speeds are expected to lower gradually
as the lo pres moves away from the coast. Waves in the Bay are 2-4
ft (near 5 ft at the mouth of the Bay)...w/ coastal seas of 5-7 ft.
SCAs to remain in place (except on the VA rivers) into/through Sun.
A second weak wave of lo pres is expected to track NE off the NC
coast Sun night...and this may tend to increase the NNE winds
again...esp over the srn 1/2 local waters. Another round of SCA
flags may be needed over the lower Bay and the Currituck sound.
Wind probs remain lower than those of the current wx. Sub-SCA
conditions are likely for Mon. A stronger lo pres system then
impacts the area Tue into early Wed. Thus...the forecast is more
uncertain during this period by may see winds shift to the SE
and then the S for some of the region on Tue before then turning
to the W to NW behind the system.
