.SYNOPSIS...
Weak high pressure builds across the region tonight into Thursday
ahead of our next low pressure system currently over the
southern plains. This system will move toward the region
Thursday night and pass through the area on Friday. Clouds and
widespread rain will spread across the area by Thu night and
persist through Friday. In addition, gusty winds are expected on
Friday especially close to the coast.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/...
As of 300 PM EDT Wednesday...

Generally quiet weather tonight as the area is currently in between
the two areas of strong low pressure off the New England coast, and
the other over the plains. High pressure will continue over the area
tonight along with clear skies (other than some partly cloudy skies
near the coast). Lows will drop into the mid 40s except 50s close
to the close.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 PM EDT Wednesday...

Impactful weather returns for Thu night and continues into Friday.
The broad trough over the plains will develop into a closed low over
the southern plains and gradually move east. Meanwhile, a large area
of sfc low pressure will continue to develop over the MS valley
on Thursday and move east to the SE by Friday morning. Broad
warm advection and isentropic lift will move into the area ahead
of the system late Thu and overspread the area from the SE Thu
night ahead of the occluded front. As such, will spread
categorical PoPs across the region from SW to NE Thu night into
early Friday morning. Will generally continue categorical PoPs
across the entire region Friday morning, then diminish PoPs
Friday afternoon into Friday evening from south to north. Friday
is tricky for Pops, especially in the afternoon as the NAM
shows two waves precip, one with the upper warm advection, and
the second with the slower surface front and triple point which
moves over the eastern part of the area. GFS is faster overall
and keeps the triple point offshore. This will play an important
role in whether or not any storms will develop on Friday. A NAM
solution would allow for thunderstorm development along the
occluded front with 500-1000 j/kg MLCAPE and would bring at
least a small chance for severe potential due to the strong wind
fields aloft. The GFS would not bring thunder however. Still,
given that this system is so dynamic, will include schc of
thunder for much of the area Friday into Fri evening. QPF for
the event will generally be 0.5 to 1.5 inch, with the highest
values over the NW piedmont. Very impressive U wind anomalies
suggest locally higher values possible especially further
inland.

Perhaps the more significant concern will be the brief period of
moderate to even strong wind associated with the tightening gradient
and strengthening U wind anomalies just north of the occluded front
on Friday. Guidance continues to show increasing easterly wind along
and just north of the occluded front Friday which could bring gusts
to 35 to 45 mph across Hampton Roads, the Peninsulas through the
northern neck and across the eastern shore. In fact, guidance
suggests that the easterly wind will become stronger as the front
moves north and the gradient tightens up even more. Would not be
shocked to see even stronger gusts from WAL and points north. Wind
gust guidance from the NAM and GFS shows gusts at the shoreline and
open water of 50+ mph. This may be more indicative of
instantaneous gusts, but most likely wind advisories will be
needed for Friday for portions of eastern VA and the lower MD
eastern shore.

Still cannot rule out a few showers Fri night, especially
across the north and northwest which will be closest to the
surface and upper low. However, any widespread rainfall not
expected due to drying aloft.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 300 PM EDT Wednesday...

The vertically stacked low pressure over the central Appalachians
will slowly move north through the weekend. With the cool air aloft
associated with the upper low and plenty of moisture available, will
need to keep chance PoPs across the region on Saturday,
especially west of I-95. Even Sat night into Sunday morning,
the upper trough and associated moisture will allow for a few
showers/sprinkles across the northern tier. However, by Sunday
afternoon, any remaining light showers/sprinkles should move out
leading to partly to mostly sunny skies. Highs Saturday will be
in the low to mid 60s, with mid to upper 60s on Sunday.

Generally quiet weather is expected for next week as upper flow
becomes westerly in advance of the deep upper trough over the
northern plains and central Canada. A weak cold front will attempt
to move through the area Tue or Wed, but very little moisture will
be available with this system. In fact, will keep a dry forecast for
now, although it is possible that low PoPs may be needed for Tuesday
or Wednesday in future forecasts. Overall, temps will be seasonable
with mid 60s to around 70 Monday and Tuesday, falling to the low-mid
60s on Wednesday.

.AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 200 PM EDT Wednesday...

VFR conditions expected through the period. Some stratocumulus at
around 4000 ft continues over the eastern shore due to the strong
low off the New England Coast. However, expect this to diminish and
move late this afternoon into this evening. N-NW winds of 10-15 kt
with gusts to 20-25kt continue through the afternoon close to the
coast. Low pressure over the plains moves eastward on Thursday, with
a frontal system moving toward the area. This will allow for
increasing high clouds on Thursday and winds turning NE then east.

A strong low pressure system will bring the potential for showers
and degraded flight conditions later Thursday night into Friday. In
addition, gusty east to southeast winds are possible Friday
especially closer to the coast and eastern shore where gusts of
35- 40 kt are possible. Unsettled conditions continue Friday
night into Saturday as upper level low pressure lingers over the
area. Improving conditions are possible by Sunday.

.MARINE...
As of 640 AM EDT Wednesday...

Powerful (~980mb) surface low pressure is stationed just off the MA
coast early this morning with high pressure building in from the
upper Midwest. The resulting pressure gradient continues to support
strong NW winds across the local waters with sustained winds of 15-
25 kt with gusts 30-35kt (highest across the northern/eastern Ches
Bay and coastal waters). Winds in the tidal rivers are generally 15-
20 kt with gusts to 25 kt. Waves in the bay are 3-5 ft with seas
offshore 4-7 ft.

Conditions are forecast to gradually improve this morning as the
surface low slowly weakens. The low is forecast to move away from
the region but will retrograde to the SW well offshore through this
afternoon before continuing away to the east. Made some minor
adjustments to headline timing with the southern coastal waters and
Ches Bay Gale headlines now set to end at 7am. Both of these areas
will have SCAs after the Gale headlines come down. Coastal waters
north of the mouth of the bay will maintain the potential for
frequent gusts to Gale force through early afternoon (closer to
the retrograding surface low), so Gales will continue until
16z/1pm. All waters (except the upper James, York, and
Rappahannock rivers) will see continued SCA conditions this
afternoon as winds slowly decrease. Winds will diminish to 15-20
kt by late afternoon into this evening for both the bay and
coastal waters as the gradient relaxes. Waves may take some time
to fall below 4 ft in the central and southern bay late this
afternoon/evening. Seas are forecast to diminish but will remain
above the 5 ft SCA threshold through the brief reduction in
winds expected today into Thursday.

Much quieter conditions are expected on Thursday as high pressure
briefly traverses the area, switching winds from N to NE and
eventually to the east by late in the day. Easterly/onshore flow
strengthens Thursday night ahead of approaching strong low pressure
over Tennessee Valley. Guidance is in relatively good agreement
showing vertically-stacked low pressure approaching the region early
Friday morning with deteriorating marine conditions. Timing and
intensity issues between the models remain, however. The
GFS/GEM/ECMWF have similar timing with the NAM remaining the
strong/slow outlier. Continued with a blended approach for this
forecast package which results in strong SCA to low-end Gale
conditions across the waters on Friday. Local wind probabilities
continue to increase with respect to Gale conditions, especially for
the northern coastal waters (and to a lesser extent, the northern
Ches Bay). Seas will again increase Friday with 7-10 ft N and 6-9 ft
S, lasting well into the upcoming weekend.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 640 AM EDT Wednesday...

Chesapeake Bay/Tidal Rivers: Tidal anomalies continue to decrease as
strong NW winds funnel water out of the Ches Bay. The general trend
will be a decline over the next day or so due to the northwesterly
flow draining water out of the Bay. However, as the next system
approaches the region later in the week a strong easterly flow
develops which will likely trap water in the Bay (especially the
northern Bay). Tides will dramatically change across the northern
Bay, from near low water today/tonight to moderate (to even major)
flood stage Friday into Saturday. Guidance continues to show strong
signals for at least a moderate flood event late Thursday-Saturday
for the northern Bay sites with models starting to hint at even
major flood levels for Bishops Head and Lewisetta. For the central
and southern Bay, we could see minor flooding starting with the
Thursday afternoon tidal cycle and persisting through Friday. Sites
on the western shore of the Bay and up the rivers may approach
moderate flood levels, especially with the Friday afternoon/evening
high tide.

Atlantic Coast: Tidal anomalies will increase along the Atlantic-
facing Eastern Shore (including Ocean City inlet) with this
afternoon's/early Thursday high tide and especially on Friday as
onshore flow ramps up considerably. Coastal Flood Advisories will
likely be needed for portions of the Eastern Shore as a result.

   Coastal Flood Watch.

Another strong area of low pressure approaches the area from the
Mississippi River valley later this week. Locally heavy rain as well
as isolated storms with gusty winds are expected Thursday night into
Friday. East to southeast winds are expected to gust to 40 to 50 mph
on Friday. This may cause some downed trees and power lines. In
addition, high surf of 9 to 13 feet along with the strong onshore
flow and moderate tidal flooding could lead to beach and dune
erosion Friday and Friday Night.
