.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure approaches from the west tonight. The associated warm
front will lift north into southern Virginia Thursday afternoon with
the trailing cold front crossing the area Thursday night. An upper
level low pressure system will cross the area Friday. High pressure
builds in from the northwest over the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1150 AM EDT Wednesday...

The fog has lifted this morning, but widespread stratus remains
trapped under the inversion noted on the morning soundings and a
light north wind. Vsby sat loop does show some thinning, but it
should remain a cloudy aftrn ahead. Lowered temps by a few degrees
based on the cloudier scenario. Highs in the 50s.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 400 AM EDT Wednesday...

Surface high pressure slides offshore Wednesday evening, with a
warm front approaching from the SW. This warm front will be
well in advance of a deep upper low that is forecast to move
into the Mid-Mississippi Valley late Wednesday night. Guidance
suggest stratus clouds re-develop tonight across much of the
area, with rain arriving in the Piedmont toward daybreak
Thursday. Forecast lows tonight range from the mid 40s N to
around 50F S.

The warm front is expected to lift through the area Thursday
morning, with rain, primarily across the northern half of the
area. By Thursday afternoon, the upper low moves into the
Tennessee Valley, with some leading shortwave energy moving
across the Mid- Atlantic region. The latest guidance suggests
that morning/early afternoon rain leaves behind a boundary
between a rain-cooled low level 1000-950mb stable layer, and a
more moisture rich higher theta- e airmass to the SE. This
boundary appears to set up in vicinity of the US 58 corridor of
s-central VA based on the latest guidance. Strong deep shear is
present ahead of the 500mb upper low along with low-lever
veering of the wind in vicinity of the boundary. Therefore, the
greatest severe risk appears to be across s- central/SE VA and
NE NC at this time. The main threats are wind and tornado, with
the large hail threat confined to any stronger supercells. The
severe threat could linger into the evening as stronger height
falls arrive ahead of the approaching upper low along with some
upper jet support. It will be difficult for any severe
convection to make it across the Bay to the Eastern Shore given
water temperatures in the mid/upper 40s. Forecast highs Thursday
range from the upper 50s/low 60s N, to the low to perhaps mid
70s SE.

A strong cold front then sweeps across the area late Thursday
night with low pressure developing off the coast Friday morning.
This will bring additional rain to the area late Thursday night
into Friday morning/early afternoon. Temperatures drops sharply
behind the front falling into the 40s for much of the area by
Friday morning. Temperatures aloft are much colder. However, the
latest guidance suggests surface temperatures stay too warm for
any prevailing snow on the back-side of the precipitation.
Nonetheless, a few wet snow flakes could mix in as precipitation
ends. Becoming windy along the coast Friday with a NNE wind
potentially gusting to 40-45 mph. High pressure and a drier
airmass arrive by Friday night. Becoming clear with low
temperatures ranging from the upper 20s NW to the mid/upper 30s
SE.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 100 PM EDT Wednesday...

High pressure moves off the New England coast Sun/Mon. GFS/ECMWF
show a low forming off the Carolina coast with a sfc trof extending
north along the Outer Banks Mon/Mon nite before moving farther out
into the Atlntc Tue. Models show some moisture as far north as the
nrn Outer Banks and psbly into Tidewater. Thus will carry low chc
PoPs across those areas Mon/Mon nite. Another low moves ne across
the nations mid section and into the Gt lakes Wed. Appears moisture
from this systm stays west of the mts thru mid week.

Highs Sun/Mon 55-60. Lows mid 30s nw to mid 40s se. Warmer Tue/Wed.
Higsh Tue 60-65. Lows Tue nite in the 40s. Highs Wed in the 60s to
near 70 across ne NC.

As of 100 PM EDT Wednesday...

The moist NNE wedge is holding firm across the area this aftrn.
Widespread IFR ST along the sern VA/ne NC coast holding firm
while CIGS have crept just above 1K FT at both RIC/SBY. NNE
winds aob 10 kts. These conditions are expected to continue
through most of the forecast period. In addition, look for areas
of fog to dvlp tonite with lcl VSBYS aob 1NM. Rain/drizzle also
psbl tonight before widespread rain ahead of the next systm
overspreads the area Thurs morning.

OUTLOOK...
Rain continues Thurs until a warm front lifts north into srn VA
Thurs aftrn. Pcpn becomes more showery at ORF/ECG/PHF Thurs aftrn
tstms psbl btwn 21Z Thurs to 03Z Fri. Pcpn remains stratiformed
at RIC/SBY. A cold front crosses the area THurs nite with an upr
lvl low keeping the rain chcs going through most of Fri. Strong
CAA Fri will lead to gusty winds late in the day. A few snow
flakes may even mix in with the pcpn before ending late Fri.
High pressure is expected to build in from the north this weekend.

.MARINE...
As of 415 AM EDT Wednesday...

Have allowed the SCA for the southern coastal waters to expire as
seas have dropped below 5 ft.

Winds are generally N around 15 kt over the Ches Bay, NNE 15 to 20
kt over the northern coastal waters, and NW around 15 kt over the
southern coastal waters. Waves are 2-3 ft in the Bay and seas are 3
to 4 ft. There is some marine fog over the southern coastal waters
and Currituck Sound that may briefly reduce visibility to 1 SM. Any
fog should quickly clear after sunrise.

Low pressure off the Outer Banks will gradually move east out to sea
through the day. A brief N surge is ongoing and will continue
through the morning in the Bay with winds occasionally gusting to 20
kt. If winds are higher than expected, then a SCA may be needed.
Winds will become N over the local waters by the early afternoon,
decreasing to 10 to 15 kt. Winds will continue to decrease to 5 to
10 kt in the Bay by late afternoon and waves will decrease to 1 to 2
ft.

Winds become NE 5 to 10 kt by the evening before turning SE
overnight. Expect winds to increase to 15-20 kt late Thursday
afternoon ahead of the next system approaching from the west. Seas
are also expected to increase to 4 to 6 ft by late Thurs afternoon

pressure crosses the region Thursday night with an associated cold
front expected to clear the southern waters by Friday morning.
Guidance continues to remain quite bullish regarding the pressure
gradient and cold advection behind the front on Friday with
increasing potential for a period of Gale conditions (for the Bay
and coastal waters) early Friday through Friday night, especially
for the northern and central coastal waters. Considerable
uncertainty remains after Saturday as High pressure looks to build
in from the north on Saturday while a new low develops and lingers
off the SE coast. This puts the local waters, especially the
southern waters, in the increased wind field due to the pressure
gradient between the high and the low. This will result in prolonged
NW flow through the weekend and into early next week. Waves build to
3-5 ft in the bay with 4-6 ft possible near the mouth Friday night.
Seas increase to 9-12 ft Friday afternoon for the northern waters
and by Friday evening for the southern waters. It will take some
time to diminish, remaining above 5 ft through early next week.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Strong northerly winds will be likely behind a cold front on
moving through the region on Friday morning. This surge of wind
will likely result in higher tides for the Friday and early
Saturday high tide cycles, particularly in the middle and lower
Chesapeake Bay. Minor to localized moderate coastal flooding
