.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure approaches from the southwest tonight and tracks
across the region Saturday. Weak high pressure returns Sunday
into the middle of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 8 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 1030 AM EDT Friday...

Late morning wx analysis shows high pressure continuing to
prevail over the local area, with mainly clear skies and light
winds. A nearly stationary boundary is positioned just off the
Carolina coast. Temperatures have rebounded into the mid 70s-
around 80F, with dew points generally into the 60s to around
70F. Only minor changes were needed with the morning update, and
forecast thinking largely remains the same for today/tonight.

WV satellite imagery shows an upstream shortwave trough now over
srn MO and AR, and as this moves E later today, weak upper
ridging will move over the local area. At the sfc, high pressure
slides offshore later today, allowing the low-level flow to
shift more to the ESE-SE by this aftn (though remaining more due
easterly near the coast in SE VA/NE NC). The models show some
increase in low level moisture across our far south this aftn as
the stalled boundary off the SE coast lifts N, but the general
consensus is for the bulk of deep moisture to stay S of the CWA.
Will have 20-30% PoPs this aftn for a few showers and isolated
tstm confined to the NE NC. Elsewhere skies remain mostly sunny.
Highs will be a few degrees warmer than yesterday, with mid to
upper 80s expected but it will still be fairly comfortable for
early August with dew points remaining in the 60s (the exception
will be near the Albemarle sound in NE NC where they will
likely rise into the lower 70s).

.SHORT TERM /8 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 400 AM EDT Friday...

The aforementioned shortwave trough approaches from the WSW
tonight and lifts NE across the area Saturday. This trough
continues to be rather strong for early August. After mainly dry
conditions this evening, a rapid increase in deep-layered
moisture will overspread the local area overnight from S to N
increase in advance of the shortwave trough. Dew points are
progged to rise into the low/mid 70s across the SE half of the
area by Saturday morning, with mid-upper 60s/around 70F NW. PWAT
values increase to 2.0-2.3" across the southeast half of the FA
by 15-18z Saturday. The latest 00Z/06 deterministic models
continue to be in fairly good agreement with respect to the
evolution of the trough, and are forecasting it to track through
the local area late Sat/Sat night, then gradually pushing off
to the the coast by Sun aftn. Expect showers and tstms to move
in from the south Friday night, and overspread most of the area
(except for the far north) by later Sat morning. Pcpn exits the
area from west to east from Sat evening through the first part
of Saturday night, with just a few showers possible near the
coast during the latter part of Saturday night. Have increased
PoPs to categorical (~80%) across most of southern/SE VA during
at least a 3-6 hr period Sat with high chc PoPs NW (highest PoPs
are generally from 15z Sat-00z Sun). There is certainly a
threat for localized flooding, especially across SE VA and NE NC
(especially since a few inches of rain fell here earlier this
week). The current QPF ranges from 0.2-0.50" N to 1.00"+ south
central/SE VA, but there will likely be localized amounts of at
least 2" within convection. The 00Z/06 HREF probs for 3" of
QPF in 3 hrs is ~30% across much of the SE portion of the CWA
during the day Sat so later shifts may need to consider a Flash
Flood Watch for some sections of the CWA (most likely the S/SE).
WPC has a MRGL Risk for Excessive Rainfall across the SE half
of the FA from 12z Sat-12z Sun. The lack of strong sfc
heating/instability will limit the severe wx threat on Saturday.

Lows tonight range from the mid 60s NW to low 70s SE. Forecast
highs Saturday range from the mid-upper 70s to low 80s, but
there is some uncertainty as clouds and more coverage of
rainfall could hold highs in the low-mid 70s. Forecast lows
generally range from the upper 60s to around 70F early Sunday
morning. Clearing skies are expected on Sunday as the shortwave
trough exits to the northeast. It will be mainly dry with a very
low chc of an aftn shower/tstm across far srn and wrn portions
of the area. Highs Sun in the mid to upper 80s. Lows Sunday
night/Monday morning range from the mid-upper 60s to low 70s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 400 AM EDT Friday...

A fairly typical summertime pattern will prevail next week as
upper ridging builds from the Gulf coast to the SE CONUS. As the
upper heights rise, so will the temperature and humidity, though
nothing excessive is expected. Expect high temperatures to
mostly be into the lower 90s by the early to middle part of
next week with lows of 70-75 F expected. While isolated
aftn/evening tstms are possible on Monday and Tuesday, most
areas will be dry as there is little in the way of lift for any
organized convection. By Wednesday/Thursday, the global models
continue to forecast a couple of shortwave troughs to track
across the Great Lakes, resulting in minor height falls across
the Mid- Atlantic. Will continue with increasing PoPs to 20% to
40% (highest across the Piedmont) for mainly aftn/evening tstms
across the area on Wed/Thu.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 130 PM EDT Friday...

Mainly VFR conditions are expected to prevail through this
evening, with deteriorating conditions likely starting
early Saturday morning. Mainly clear skies are expected across
VA and MD through early evening. At ECG, SCT CU is expected
through early evening with a low (~20%) chc of an isolated
shower/tstm. An area of low pressure begins to move NE tonight
before tracking across the area on Saturday. However, VFR
conditions are still expected through ~06z (some potential for
MVFR CIGs at ECG after 00-03z). MVFR CIGs are likely at all
terminals except SBY after 06-09z. SBY may not see sub-VFR
conditions until late Saturday morning. Widespread showers are
expected at the terminals after 12z Saturday, with a chc of
tstms during the aftn-evening at PHF/ORF/ECG. MVFR/IFR VSBYs
are expected in the showers, with prevailing MVFR CIGs. A period
or two of IFR CIGs is possible at RIC from 10-18z Sat.

evening through Saturday night. Flight restrictions may linger
through Saturday night, especially near the coast. For Sunday
and Monday, mainly dry with VFR conditions expected. VFR with isolated-

As of 350 AM EDT Friday...

Weak high pressure over the region early this morning with winds
generally 5-10 kt from the south and southwest north of the Cape
Henry. To the south, winds are from the east around 5kt. Seas are 2-
4 ft with waves 1-2 ft.

High pressure migrates slowly offshore today with a stationary front
still hung up to the SE of the local waters. The gradient will
tighten a bit across the southern waters later this morning with
winds increasing to around 10 kt. Flow becomes east and southeast
~10kt by this afternoon into the evening. An area of low pressure is
progged to develop to the southwest on Saturday and move across the
region Saturday night into Sunday morning. Models continue to differ
on the exact strength and placement of the low but the general
consensus shows low pressure moving NE across the area with winds
turning west/northwest behind the low center. Guidance has backed
off somewhat regarding potential SCA conditions for the local waters
but enhanced NW flow as the low departs could result in locally poor
boating conditions early Sunday morning, especially across the
northern Bay and coastal waters. Seas build to 3-4 ft during this
period with waves staying in the 1-3 ft range. Thereafter, southerly
flow returns with some sea/land breeze influence near the coast in
the weak flow regime.

Moderate Risk of rip currents for all area beaches today. A moderate
risk is possible for the northern beaches on Saturday.
