.SHORT TERM.../Through Sun night/ A strong short wave moving north
along the front that is stalled over the southern panhandle dumped
quite a bit of snow on the southern panhandle overnight. Ketchikan
in particular got hit rather hard with reports of 11 to 14 inches
of snow received from various spotters there between midnight and
3 am. Snowfall rates may have reached up to 2 inches per hour at
times overnight based on webcam views and the 0.2 inch hourly
liquid precip measured at Ketchikan Airport several times
overnight. Elsewhere, Stewart, BC (near Hyder) got 9 inches, and
various reports from Wrangell, and Prince of Wales Island ranged
from 1 inch to up to 4 inches. Snow continues to fall across the
region though rates from Ketchikan and Wrangell westward are
starting to diminish as the low that caused it exits to the north.
Hyder started to see snow rates increase a few hours ago so their
heaviest accumulations will likely be before 9 am. Precipitation
should diminish into this evening for most areas as what is left
of the front finally pushes off to the east. The winter storm
warnings and winter weather advisories remain up for the area
though the expected snow totals have been increased for the
Ketchikan and Hyder areas based on reports received so far.

Farther north the weather is a completely different story. Snow
from the southern panhandle system does not quite make it past
Frederick Sound. This is mainly because the northern panhandle is
dealing with increasing cold northerly outflow. Winds have
increased to gale force in Lynn Canal overnight with small craft
winds extended down Cross Sound, Chatham Strait, and Stephens
Passage. Winds are also starting to gust to 40 mph near downtown
Juneau and Douglas as mountain wave activity starts acting up due
to cross barrier flow increasing to 30 kt overnight. Overall these
winds will be at their highest this morning as the northerly
pressure gradient maxes out with the interaction between the low
in the southern panhandle and the high in the Yukon. The low
weakens and gets pushed east this afternoon and evening leaving
the Yukon high behind to continue feeding the weaker outflow Sat
night. Even the high eventually gets pushed east on Sun as a new
front starts to approach from the west allowing outflow winds to
diminish Sun morning.

Sun night see the next front starting to affect the area. Gale
force winds are expected along the front in the gulf and precip
will be starting to spread along the gulf coast down to Cape
Decision by late Sun night. Conditions will still be rather cold
in many areas so the precip is expected to start out as snow even
for Sitka. As for snow accumulations Yakutat will have to be
watched as with the amounts of expected QPF and the cold
conditions a significant snowfall is looking more and more likely
Sun night.

.LONG TERM.../Monday through Friday/ As of 10pm Friday. A low just
over the Prince William Sound area and its associated front will
be the main weather maker for the start of next week. The front
will already be over the Yakutat area early Monday morning and
looks to quickly spread over the northern and central areas
through the morning, then reach the southern inner channels in the
afternoon. With cold air already in place, there is potential for
several inches of snow, especially for Yakutat, until the winds
shift S-SW in the afternoon and likely cause mixing or change over
to rain. Even outside of Yakutat, the snow could affect the
Monday morning commute for a good portion of the region, so be
prepared to give yourself some extra time that day. However, the
main part of the front moving through during the daytime should
limit accumulations (lowering snow ratios) and cause a change over
to rain for the south and a mix most other places. The quick
moving front pushes through fairly early Monday evening, with some
breaks or a transition to showers. However, some models are
showing a wave or a new low tracking up along the front and making
a new triple point, this would effectively prolong the rain
through Monday night.

The next low pressure system looks to track northward into the
Gulf of Alaska on Tuesday. Models have large differences on the
track and timing of this low (even at the upper levels), from the
eastern side of the gulf (Canadian) to the western gulf (GFS).
There is slightly better agreement that the warm front would
track from south to north over the panhandle sometime Tuesday,
causing greater chances of liquid precip or limited snow
accumulations due to warmer temps. This system will still be in
the gulf on Wednesday, but whether the front will be just offshore
or directly over top of us is still in question. For this reason,
have limited POP to 10-70% for Tuesday onward. We also give a
word of caution to mariners that the wind directions may need to
be adjusted as we pin down different low/front tracks, but did
make a point to increase winds on the inside waters to account for
the fronts.

By the end of next week, models start coming into better agreement
on a low becoming somewhat stationary just south of our offshore
area. This position usually translates to offshore flow and lower
precip potential for the north. Am also seeing downslope warming
show up in the 850mb temps on Thursday. This could be an
inversion...or potential for a very warm spring day, so kept
Thurs/Fri as the warmest days of the week in the forecast.
