Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

SHORT TERM.../Through Tuesday night/...A break from the
precipitation, but colder, more winter-like temperatures are
in store for Southeast Alaska in this short term forecast period.

The mid level disturbance discussed yesterday developed as
anticipated and has produced some measurable snow over the central
Panhandle since yesterday afternoon. That mid-level disturbance is
shearing apart as of this afternoon and precipitation is on the
decline. Northerly outflow winds resulting from high pressure to
the north and low pressure well to the south will begin to
diminish this evening. Thus, tomorrows forecast calls for Blue
Skies (cue the ELO song). Seriously, tomorrow should be a fine
outdoor kind of day, but temperatures will be on the chilly side
for this time of the year, ranging from the low to mid 30s over
the northern two thirds of the Panhandle. South of Sumner Strait,
temps might ride to the mid 40s.

Colder low level air already in place over the northern inner
channels combined with small craft conditions still favors light
freezing spray over Lynn Canal, but no such concerns elsewhere.
With the relaxation of the northerly gradient, tonight should be
the coldest night of the week, with temperatures ranging from the
mid teens to the north and upper 20s to the south.

As of yesterday, I was planning on doing some flight-seeing on
Tuesday, and it will be a great day for general aviation
activities. Not so for me, though. It seems the elevator trim
cable has jumped the track and the airplane is down for
maintenance as a result. Bummer.

LONG TERM.../Wednesday through Monday/...Guidance has slowed the
arrival of the next weather system, leaving the panhandle mostly
dry until Wednesday afternoon. Chances of precipitation will
linger Thursday and then a weak atmospheric river moves south of
the Panhandle Thursday night into Friday bringing back widespread
precipitation. The GFS/ECMWF models agree that an upper level
trough builds Saturday resulting in below normal temperatures
Saturday evening into Sunday.

The main story for the long term forecast will be precipitation
amounts and precipitation type. For Wednesday evening, a high
probability for accumulating snowfall for most of the panhandle
based on model QPF, temperature trends, and MOS/NBM guidance.
Winds expected to pick up with this front, and small craft
advisories can be anticipated along the outer coast and inner
channels. Moderate uncertainty for timing of the front.

The next system bringing precipitation is associated with a weak
atmospheric river to the south on Friday. Widespread
precipitation expected, except less likely for Yakutat as guidance
is adjusting this system further south. Highest precipitation
totals on Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan, and Hyder with a
chance of snow north of Petersburg. With the current track of this
low pressure, a tight northerly pressure gradient would build in
the Northern Lynn Canal, creating winds up to 30kts. Overall
confidence remains moderate for temperature changes, but below
average on which locations will see the most precipitation through
the week.
