.SHORT TERM...A low pressure system that moved by Dixon Entrance
into BC is currently responsible for scattered showers and low
clouds, mostly through the central and southern panhandle. A
trough extending back into the northern Gulf should work to keep a
chance for isolated to scattered showers for most of the day,
particularly in the south but any additional snow accumulations
look to be minimal at best.
High pressure to the north will steer cold offshore winds over the
region for the foreseeable future. The pressure gradient will be
strong enough over the northern inner channels to promote gales
through northern Lynn Canal and strong winds in Skagway into the
evening before weakening. Expect this pressure gradient to
restrengthen overnight on Sunday, likely bringing back the
aforementioned hazards. Further, with temperatures dropping in
the coming days, expect that freezing spray may become a greater
issue, mostly through the northern inner channels.
.LONG TERM.../Monday through Saturday night/...Models have
continued to back off on the Monday system as additional data has
become available. It is looking increasingly likely that the
outflow from cold air surging out of the north will be sufficient
to keep the panhandle dry, though some cloud cover, and perhaps
the passing chance of some snow for coastal areas. The big story
will be the cold. Driven by a large area of high pressure in the
Yukon, cold air will surge out of various passes and into the
panhandle itself. This will see temperatures steadily falling
across the area from Monday onwards, with Tuesday night into
Wednesday morning likely to see some of the coldest weather that
this winter has brought to SE Alaska thus far. Given the
corresponding northerly outflow, windchill in some areas could
also become fairly impressive, particularly in Haines and Skagway
and along their respective highways. After Wednesday, ensemble
guidance diverges, although a trend towards warming temperatures
through the second half of next week has been emerging. Overall
forecast confidence is average.

A very strong high pressure system will move southeast from the Arctic Ocean into Northwest Canada early next week. The 1050 to 1060 mb high pressure center will lead to a brisk northerly outflow pattern for the panhandle. Much colder air will push into the region with the coldest temperatures expected Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Low temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be near or below zero for northern Lynn Canal and in the single digits from Gustavus to Juneau. Over the central and southern inner channels, low temperatures will be in the teens, with mid teens to lower 20s for coastal communities near the Gulf of Alaska. Temperatures will begin to moderate by the end of the week.
