Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 232 PM AKST Thu Feb 4 2021 .SHORT TERM...The jet stream and a surface low passing through Dixon Entrance continues to advect clouds and moisture over the southern panhandle today. Low clouds lingered over the northern inner channels with some brief flurries/drizzle observed. Most of this moisture will shift southward through the night as a polar jet streak pushes SE over the region. This will bring in another round of cold/dry air. Meanwhile, building surface high pressure over the northern interior will keep north winds going through the inner channels with higher gusts likely out of interior passes. The southern areas look to have lighter winds by Friday morning and after rain on top of snow today, will be a good scenario for fog. A new low looks to track across the gulf on Friday, brining snow and rain showers to the region starting late Friday afternoon. Flow aloft continues to show the polar stream, but this also merges with a warmer jet out of the SW. Latest models have shifted the surface low track to be more in line with the SW jet, which changes the timing and trajectory of showers for the panhandle. Previously the low tracked from NW to SE, giving snow showers to Yakutat first. Now the low takes a bee line for the southern half of the panhandle, giving very little precip to the north at all. In both cases, the low shifts ESE away from the area through early Saturday. The ECMWF and Canadian held on to some remnant showers the longest associated with a low over the northern gulf. Have gone with a blend of these options for POP, with more weight on the SW track. But due to models shifting track from day to day, there is lower forecast confidence in this part of the forecast. .LONG TERM.../Saturday through Thursday night/...The extended forecast starts with a system moving through the panhandle. Though the system no longer looks as impressive as it did in previous runs, do still expect that much of the panhandle, including Juneau, will see some accumulating snow. Given the cooler air in place for much of the system, the big question will be how high the snow ratio will be. Chose to lean towards a 15:1 to 20:1 snow ratio, given the cooler weather involved. This system will quickly move out of the panhandle, and by the second half of Saturday, large parts of the area may already be drying out. A dry spell will then dominate, driven by broad outflow winds, before another system moves in from the NW. Increasing indications that this system may in part stay offshore, and so have reduced POPs for the area through Monday and Tuesday as a result. Afterwards, ensemble spread rapidly increases, and the forecast becomes more and more uncertain. While previous runs had hinted at a warmer week ahead, it is now looking increasingly likely that next week will be on the cooler side. && .AJK WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... PUBLIC...None.
