.SHORT TERM...A low pressure system over the eastern gulf off the
coast of the central panhandle is causing widespread snow and
some rain along the southern outer coast today. The shape of the
jet stream can seen on satellite as a ridge extending from the
Pacific and westerly flow directed at the panhandle. This flow is
the cause of the warmer air pushing into the southern panhandle
and is expected to remain through Thursday morning. Conversely,
the placement of the surface low off of Sitka is keeping colder
north winds through the northern inner channels down to around
Five Fingers. The relatively warm/moist onshore flow over-running
the cold air at the surface, is a perfect set up for accumulating
snow in the Juneau area and along other west facing slopes. The
snow continues to fall with high ratios (dry) across the north,
but expect it to be wetter and not accumulating as quickly the
further south you go.

The surface low will weaken as it tracks ESE over the southern
panhandle tonight. Expect rain/snow to become more showery on the
back side of the low and diminish through Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, high pressure building over northern Alaska and the Yukon
will cause increased northerly pressure gradient along the northern
border. Then an arctic jet streak pushes SE along the Coast Mtns
Thursday night bringing in another round of cold air. The dry/cold
air will help to limit precipitation to a few isolated snow showers.

For Friday, models have shifted somewhat. A new low center looks to
develop over the norther gulf in the afternoon, then develop as it
tracks ESE toward the panhandle Friday night. For this reason, have
increased POP for Yakutat along with around an inch of snow,
possibly more as they tend to get good rates out of lows just
offshore. Snow showers will then spread over the rest of the
panhandle through late Friday night. The polar jet pushing the low,
similar to the Monday system, should keep snow ratios on the higher
end = more dry fluffy snow that is easier to manage, but also one
of the many parts of snow forecasting that has low confidence.

.LONG TERM.../Friday through Wednesday night/...As of Tuesday
evening. This extended range forecast begins with a quiet start.
SE Alaska will remain largely dry through much of Friday. A few of
the operational models are hinting at a weak shortwave bringing,
at most, some chances of snow to the central panhandle, but am not
sold on this. By Friday afternoon or evening, cloud cover will be
returning in full force to the panhandle as another system starts
to move in. By Saturday morning, much of Southeast Alaska will be
under the precipitation shield from this front. It is at this
point that guidance rapidly diverges, as operational runs disagree
on which part of the panhandle is favored for the bulk of QPF.
Chose to lean more on the ensembles which paint a broader
precipitation shield across the area. It appears increasingly
likely that this will be an accumulating snow event for much of
northern half of the panhandle, including Juneau, though how much
is not yet certain.

After this system passes, even the ensemble guidance steadily
weakens in confidence. Substantial differences in trajectory of
synoptic scale features become more and more evident. Some hinting
at another system arriving early next week does exist, but this
far out that remains a low confidence forecast. It does look like
the possibility of a warm-up across the area exists towards the
middle of next week, but once again, uncertainty remains high.
