.SHORT TERM.../Through Tuesday night/ Last night's system has
completely cleared the panhandle and left anywhere from less then
half of an inch (Hoonah, and Gustavus) to nearly 6 inches of new
snow (Juneau, and Haines) across the area. In its wake,
temperatures have moderated compared to what was seen over the
weekend (more teens and 20s rather then single digits and below
zero) and some areas of clouds still linger.

Over the next 36 hours the weather is somewhat quiet. There is one
very weak system moving through tonight that will bring some more
cloud cover and maybe some light snow to the outer coast (only
slight chance though). Otherwise, the main forecast challenge is
temperatures and wind. Overnight lows tonight will mainly be
determined by cloud cover and wind. Clear areas with little wind
may see temperatures drop into the single digits, but for most
places teens will be the norm. Temperatures are expected to
recover into the 20s tomorrow and may stay somewhat warmer into
Tue night as cloud cover and precip from the next system, and some
southerly flow begin to effect the area.

As for winds, there is a weaker cold push coming down from the
Yukon on Tuesday. This will be just enough to increase winds out
of Taku Inlet and down Lynn Canal, but only up to 25 to maybe 30
kt at most. Otherwise the main story will be a shift of wind
direction to the south late Tue night just before the next system
comes in.

.LONG TERM.../Wednesday through Saturday/ A fast moving system for
Wednesday showing a similar track to the Sunday night low that
produced 4 to 6 inches of snow over parts of the panhandle,
however expect that this low will have lower snow amounts due to
a couple of factors. The system is faster moving, QPF is lower,
air temps will be warmer resulting in more mix of rain and lower
snow ratios are expected. Coastal and southern areas should
receive 1 to 3 inches while central and northern locations getting
2 to 4 inches total. Had 24 hour QPF and snow totals nudged toward
GFS/canadian and were a bit higher than NBM, which has been doing
well the past few events, and still did not get advisory level
snow totals. But with the precipitation mix do expect difficulty
with travel on Wednesday for morning and evening commutes. The
tricky part of this time frame is the change to rain or freezing
rain/drizzle as the low/front moves to the south. Model soundings
along coastal and southern areas have a dry slot in the dendritic
growth zone but still have low level saturated air, which is
conducive for freezing drizzle/rain.

Dry period with sun and cooler temperatures along with increasing
northerly winds for Thursday before the next significant system
Friday into Saturday. A closed low moves in the NE Gulf with the
associated front crossing into the Eastern Gulf early Friday.
Possible snow totals for this event of 6 to 12 inches by Saturday
evening as the main low tracks southward along the coast. EURO and
GFS Ensembles are giving 50-70% chance of greater than 0.50" of
QPF over 24 hours and 20-30% of greater than 1.00" of QPF over 24
hours.

Beyond the weekend very cold arctic airmass moves over the
panhandle due to an amplified ridge building over the western AK
Gulf. This will result in near record breaking minimum
temperatures. Temperature anomalies will be 25 deg below normal
for this time of year. Pressure gradient also sets up for strong
northerly and outflow winds.

Best to prepare now for the New Years system and the arctic
outbreak for the start of 2022.

...Wintry Weather for Wednesday and Significant Storm Friday...

A fast moving low will track across the AK Panhandle from North
to South on Wednesday. This system will produce 1 to 2 inches of
snow along coastal and southern areas and 2 to 4 inches for the
central and northern regions. In addition as temperatures warm
snow will likely mix or change over to rain for coastal and
southern locations with the possibility of a brief period of
freezing rain.

A strong system is expected to move over the entire Panhandle
Friday before moving out on Saturday. This system may produce 6
to 12 inches of snow by New Years Day.

Behind this system very cold air will move in for next week with
near record breaking low temperatures along with strong outflow
winds.
