Low pressure over the far southeastern Gulf of Alaska will
continue tracking southeast towards the Pacific Northwest coast
by Wednesday afternoon. An inverted trough over Southeast Alaska
will weaken as an equally weak surface ridge builds over the 
eastern Gulf on Thursday.

.SHORT TERM.../ Through Tuesday night / A moderate 980 Mb low
about 300 nm southeast of Kodiak Island has been moving East-
southeast and will continue to do so through Tuesday ending up
about 300 nm southwest of Vancouver Island Wednesday morning. A
trough of lower pressure that was hanging around from the previous
weather systems is getting a nudge eastward that is spreading
light snow/flurries into the Yakutat area. This band of clouds
with linger near the NE gulf coast and could try to drift towards
the Northern Panhandle. The low as it passes under the panhandle
will keep the precipitation nearly completely away from the
southern panhandle.

The winds have diminished almost every where in Southeast Alaska,
with just a few areas continuing gusty conditions like near
Skagway. 15 to 20 kt is generally the max winds for the marine
areas today through the inner channels. A small craft advisory
lingers over Cross Sound early Tuesday morning.

The temperatures over the area has been colder than normal as
some sites were about 15 degrees cooler than normal for Monday.
Lows temperatures for Monday night while still on the cool side
for the Panhandle area with clearer skies, however, it should not
be colder that Tuesday morning lows.

.LONG TERM...The extended forecast is looking to stay below
normal for temperatures an less active than winter has been so
far. Generally lowered temps and pop/qpf for this forecast package
and kept some of the northerly outflow winds going.

An upper level ridge rebuilds over the western gulf Wednesday and
extends northward into the arctic, with the subsequent NWLY jet
stream across SE Alaska. This flow pattern will keep us mainly dry
and cold on Wednesday, but models are picking up on some precip
(snow showers) tracking across the area (NW to SE along the outer
coast) assoc with some upper level vorticity and a weak lingering
lee side low over the northern gulf. Think that the dry outflow
will put a damper on the snow potential and will see some clouds
with it but only light snow.

Wednesday night, surface high pressure builds in the Yukon,
causing increased north winds through the northern inner channels.
The upper level ridge will shift eastward across the panhandle
through the day Thursday with flow backing to the SW followed by
a quick moving trough pushing through for Friday. At the surface,
a low moves across the northern gulf Thursday night, only to be
taken over by another low tracking across the north Pacific, well
south of the area. This north Pacific low is further south than
yesterday and the northern gulf low is quite a bit weaker too in
the latest models. The trend of systems becoming weaker with new
model runs is fairly common when we've had dry/cold/outflow in
place. It takes longer to overcome the dry airmass and models tend
to do that too quickly, then find themselves backtracking the
next day. Still, snow ratios look to be on the high side to start
(dry/fluffy snow) so could see a quick couple inches late Thursday
night through Friday afternoon.

The break between systems looks brief Friday night through Saturday
morning as another upper level trough and weak surface low will be
moving in from the west by afternoon. Again this looks to be a quick
moving system with minor accumulations Saturday night.

Early next week is up in the air as far as what is expected to
happen. For the most part it appears to be quieter with maybe a
weak system coming through from the NW on Mon. However, guidance
is at odds on how much cold air will be in the area with some
suggesting more upper level ridging moving into the area and
possibly some warming while others keep the cold air around.
Forecast confidence is poor in the far extended.
