.SHORT TERM.../Wednesday night through Thursday/...The short term
forecast begins and ends with showers passing over the panhandle.
And the snow showers today have produced significant snowfall
amounts for some parts of the area too. Juneau saw upwards of 4
inches by the early afternoon. Haines received over 6 inches of
snow by the early afternoon, with the snow being heavy at times.
Yakutat has been experiencing quite the mix with precip reports
bouncing between light rain with some reduced visibility, and
light snow with reduced visibility down to near 2 miles at times.
Showers are expected to continue into Thursday as a passing
shortwave moves over. New snow accumulations will be around 1 to 2
inches with most of that falling early in the day. Clouds could
even break up a bit in the afternoon so some folks in the
panhandle may get some peaks of sunshine.
Daytime highs will be in the 20s to mid 30s for the central and
northern panhandle with mid to upper 30s found in the southern
panhandle. Some rain showers are likely in the southern panhandle
but the central and northern areas are more likely to see snow
showers.
The winds should calm down tonight but as the next front
approaches, they’ll pick right back up to 20 to 30 kts by
tomorrow evening.
.LONG TERM.../Friday evening through Monday as of 3pm
Wednesday/...After the heaviest precipitation moves out Friday,
expect snow showers, much colder temperatures, and outflow winds
to begin in the mid-range.
All locations across the panhandle should change back to snow
late Friday. Snow showers will remain through Saturday, resulting
in variable amounts across the panhandle. Models are leaning
towards drying out the panhandle quickly through the weekend, so
the only area reaching advisory level snowfall Saturday into
Sunday is Sitka. Then a break in the clouds and clear skies are
possible Sunday and Monday.
As this surface low moves along SE along the coast, a strong
pressure gradients will result in outflow winds, with the
strongest gusts expected in the Northern Lynn region late
Saturday. Gusty conditions may lead to gale warnings in the inner
channels this weekend.
Temperatures will drop significantly through the weekend. The
forecast anticipates the highest temperature during the mid-term
to occur Friday morning. Once areas reach the high for that day,
expect a consistent decrease in temperatures through the weekend.
For example, maximum temperatures on Sunday will barely reach
freezing in the southern half of the panhandle and the northern
portion is expected to remain in the teens. Gusty conditions from
the outflow event will help to keep some locations in the Northern
Lynn warmer than model guidance. Looking at the long-term, the
trend seems to continue for December 13 - 17, the CPC is
indicating that we will likely remain below normal for
temperatures.
