.SHORT TERM...Another active week of winter weather for SE
Alaska. The lows this week are coming in from the west (last week
most storms came from the south), taking a track that traces the
Alaska gulf coastline. Generally this track doesn't have as much
warm air available to it for a change over to all rain everywhere,
but is warm enough that the quality of the snow will become
wetter through the event, compared to the dry snow showers many
saw on Sunday. However, temperatures today are plenty cold enough
for precip to start as all snow everywhere tonight with
accumulations expected by Tuesday morning, even for the Prince of
Wales and Ketchikan areas. Winds are expected to increase out of
the south through the evening, causing a gradual warm up and for
most places to see some mixing through Tuesday mid-morning. But
before then, snowfall rates look to be greatest for Yakutat
through the evening; around midnight for the Juneau/Icy Strait
region; and through early Tuesday morning for the Petersburg to
Hyder areas. Please see the latest winter weather statements in
effect for details.

Peak winds will occur late tonight, followed by a wind shift to
the W-SW which will should coincide with the warm-up and mixing.
Yakutat has the greatest likelihood to see strong winds overnight
due to the proximity of the low/front. If snow is still falling
during that time, conditions could be near blizzard, but more
likely is that a mix will have already started with visibility
improving.

.LONG TERM.../Wednesday morning through Friday/...The mid-range
forecast begins as the first impactful storm of the week
diminishes. The low responsible for the event move SE down the
Outer Coast before moving inland later on Wednesday and
dissipating. Behind it, onshore flow will support a period of
rain and snow showers in the forecast before the next system
arrives Friday.

Warm moist air from the West Pacific will move towards the
peninsula of Alaska through the latter half of the week. This
plume of moisture will contribute to the maintenance of a powerful
low over the Bering which will move over the Alaska Peninsula
through Thursday before crossing into the Gulf of Alaska. The
broader system will redevelop as a triple- point low in the Gulf
through Friday. A strong front associated with the system will
bring elevated winds and heavy precipitation across the area. It
looks likely that precipitation will broadly start as snow across
most of the panhandle, before a switchover to snow happens through
the day on Friday. Timing of this changeover continues to remain
a challenge, as the warm air advection ahead of it will be
fighting residual cooler air still lingering in the panhandle.

Behind the front an additional wave will keep chances of precip
over parts of the panhandle through part of the weekend. The QPF
forecast was largely derived from a blend towards the GFS
operational run which broadly maintained consistency until late on
Friday.

/ Sunday to Monday / Some minor timing differences between them,
however, most model solutions are indicating that a high amplitude
long wave trough moves into the eastern gulf and SE AK. This will
allow the colder air to spill southeast to the Yukon Territory
and Northwestern British Columbia. Very cold outflow looking to
start Sunday and continue into Monday. Ensemble means are looking
at standard deviations of around -4 for the temperatures. The
coldest will be near the northern portion of the panhandle along
the border area of Klondike and Haines Highways. 850 Mb
temperatures look to be near -20 to -24 C.
