.SHORT TERM.../Through Friday evening/...Snow began early in
Yakutat and there was a concern that the winter weather advisory
there might need to be upgraded to a winter weather warning. But
after a quick 3 inches of snow overnight last night, snowfall
rates tapered off considerably. The situation there for today and
tonight was studied carefully and in the end it was decided to
leave the weather advisory in place. Snow rates are expected to
pick up again tonight, but am not currently forecasting enough
snow through 9 am tomorrow to justify a warning.
The very cold temperatures at White Pass have moderated some and
winds have calmed down as well. Overnight wind chill values of -20
are expected tonight, so no wind chill advisory was issued with
the afternoon forecast.
Of greater concern and greater uncertainty is a low that is
expected to form on the existing frontal boundary and track north.
Two major solutions were being offered regarding the track of this
low. The ECMWF and Canadian were resolving this nascent low
farther offshore, whereas the NAM and GFS tracked this feature
much closer to the southern outer coast. The choice was made to
use the solution closer to the coast. By this afternoon, both the
ECMWF and the Canadian were in line with this idea as well, so I
made a good guess this morning. Seriously, this will result in
stronger winds along the southern outer coast, southern Chatham
Strait, and western Sumner Strait Friday night. Appropriate
changes were made to wind grids to reflect this, but additional
increases to winds may be necessary based on how the models
perform overnight.
.LONG TERM.../Friday night through next Thursday/Friday night and
Saturday an upper low over the Gulf of Alaska stalls as another
deep low rolls to the Kamchatka Peninsula, effectively creating an
omega block. As a result, Southeast Alaska should experience much
of the byproduct of southerly flow, that is chances of
precipitation and eventual warming at low levels. A 5-degree
increase in temperatures across Southeast Alaska Saturday, is
most significant for the southern and south central Panhandle with
temperatures reaching the high 30s even north into
Petersburg/Wrangell. Were it not a surface low moving northwest
along the coast pulling out to sea and allowing more drying to
take place, we might have added chances of rain showers in the
forecast. Incidentally, the low that does track along the coast
spreads more unstable lapse rates across the region, therefore, we
changed precipitation to showers into early next week. Gradients,
too, increase as the low initially closes in on the shoreline,
thus we expect small craft northerlies to develop through Lynn
Canal and Stephens Passage with likely gale force southeasterlies
offshore of Baranof affiliated with the passing low.
Yet another surface low develops underneath the upper low now
situated well to the south for Sunday, and thus precipitation
pulls to the south and offshore. This should allow the northern
and much of the central Inner Channels a period to dry out with
only chances of snow showers across Prince of Wales and the
southern Inner Channels. Aiding in this drying pattern, should be
the redevelopment of outflow winds especially late Sunday into
Monday.
A shortwave pivoting into the eastern Aleutians early next week
looks to shove the remains of the upper low into BC by late
Monday. A ridge follows behind across the gulf and Panhandle, but
there is still a disparity on when exactly the ridge axis folds
east of the Panhandle, at which point we should be confident that
precipitation begins. The current forecast reflects rain chances
building across Southeast Alaska Monday into Tuesday night when
confidence is highest. Likewise, there are important discrepancies
in the frontal orientation which will either open the southerly
gates to warm oceanic air or keep it locked tight away from the
Inner Channels. At this point, we have allowed warming to commence
sometime Wednesday and introduced rain across most zones, but this
could change.
