Sound and weakening this afternoon. A broad trough will remain 
over the eastern Gulf through the weekend with another low 
pressure system projected to move into the southern Panhandle 
Sunday.

.SHORT TERM.../Through Saturday/

**First Accumulating Snowfall of the Season at Sea Level**

An area of low pressure in the north pacific will lift northward
this evening and head towards the NE gulf coast by Friday. Cold
air at the surface will be locked in place across the northern
Panhandle through Friday afternoon as the surface gradient remains
northerly. Southerly winds at 850 mb and above will pump in ample
moisture across the Panhandle at the same time increasing the
chance for precip from south to north this evening. Rain and snow
showers have already been observed across the Central and
Northern Panhandle Thursday afternoon and will increase in
coverage through the evening. This is a very marginal snowfall
event as the cold air at the surface across the northern Panhandle
is hovering right around freezing. 850 mb temps will only be
around -2 to -5C as the low approaches this evening and tomorrow.
Typically colder 850 mb temps are preferred for a heavy snowfall
event around SE AK. However, model soundings have been consistent
over the past few days showing a deep stable layer at the surface
up to 4,000 feet then a very unstable saturated layer above it.
Mid and upper level lapse rates of 8.5 C/KM and a saturated
dendritic growth zone (DGZ) will make for optimal snowfall
production aloft. With such steep lapse rates, a stable boundary
layer, and northern surface winds, thinking that the heavy
precipitation rates will cool the column enough for P-type to
remain all snow across the Icy Strait corridor northward.
Conditions are very marginal and any warm nose near 850 mb or
below could easily change snow over to a sleet, a mix, or even
rain. Expecting surface temperatures to remain near freezing for
much of the event. Snowfall totals through Friday afternoon will
range from 1 to 2 inches around Icy Strait, to 2 to 6 inches
around Juneau, to 3 to 7 inches around Upper Lynn Canal. Lower
confidence exists in surface temperatures and snowfall amounts as
the forecast deviates from most model guidance. Current thinking
is that models are too warm with surface temperatures and are not
taking into account heavy precip rates and the northerly gradient.
This is bust potential with this forecast as temperatures could
remain too warm for accumulating snow. However, currently thinking
surface temperatures will be cold enough. This will be watched
very closely tonight.

Further south across the Central and Southern Panhandle, expect
rain to continue pushing northward tonight and persist through
Friday afternoon. Rainfall amounts could approach an inch for
many areas. Flooding is not expected at this time.

Winds will also be impactful through this period as Gale force
conditions are already ongoing for Lynn Canal and Clarence Strait.
As the low pushes northward, expect small craft conditions to
develop across all of the Inner Channels. Strong wind headlines
are also posted for much of the Southern Panhandle, Outer Coast,
Downtown Juneau, and Upper Lynn Canal as winds will gust to 40 mph
through Friday morning as the low passes by offshore. The
southwesterly push behind the low will also bring gusty winds and
an abrupt wind shift across the Panhandle Friday afternoon and
evening. Expect a wind shift from northerly to southeasterly
winds to move through the Panhandle Friday morning/afternoon. Then
Friday afternoon/evening expect another wind shift from SE to SW.
Brief periods of strong winds over both land and marine areas are
expected as these wind shifts occur.

Cold air advection aloft is very strong behind the passing low.
850 mb temperatures as low as -7 to -9C move in aloft Friday
evening through Saturday. With steep lapse rates and cold air
advection, expect continued rain and snow showers through the day
on Saturday. Accumulating snow is possible, especially under the
most intense showers. Highest confidence in accumulating snow from
these showers will be around Yakutat, therefore have issued a
Winter Weather Advisory for them as well. Snowfall rates with the
strongest cells could approach 1-2 inches per hour at times. Due
to the scattered nature of the showers, some areas may remain dry
while other nearby areas receive heavy snow. Snowfall
accumulations could be variable over short distances as well
Friday evening through Saturday. The potential is there for
thunder from any convection, especially along the outer coast;
however this is not reflected in the forecast at the moment.

Forecast confidence is lower than normal for the short term as
this snowfall event is relatively marginal. This system will be
monitored very closely over the next 24 hours.

.LONG TERM.../ Saturday through Thursday as of 10 PM Wednesday /
Precipitation will steadily diminish through Saturday night and
Sunday morning, though some areas may still see lingering snow and
rain showers. By Sunday afternoon, skies across at least the N
panhandle will likely be fairly clear. The cause of the clearing
skies will be an outflow event which will take place as the
pressure gradient strengthens between a new low moving N from the
S and a high in the Yukon. Expect that with this outflow event, it
is likely that breezy conditions will be seen across at least the
N half of the panhandle. It is looking increasingly probable that
at least Lynn Canal will see gale force winds, and have added
small craft winds in through many of the central inner channels.
There may also be an opportunity for a weak to moderate strength
mountain wave event to setup over downtown Juneau, though am not
yet confident in this given the differences in timing of the low
to the south.

The windy conditions will most likely begin to subside Monday
afternoon through Monday night as the low in the south attempts to
advance into the panhandle. Ensembles and operational models alike
are in better consensus in bringing the low slightly further N.
However it still looks like the southern panhandle will
experience the bulk of any significant precipitation with this
system. The far N panhandle will likely stay fairly dry, with
precip chances slowly increasing through the Icy Strait Corridor
on South.

Disagreement among ensembles and operational runs alike rapidly
increases after this time period, but it does look like the low
in the S departs the area by Tuesday. It is possible that a new
wave could impact the N part of the panhandle Tuesday or
Wednesday, but forecast uncertainty means this cannot be assumed
with any degree of confidence.
