.SHORT TERM.../ Thru Friday night / A surface ridge is building
over the eastern gulf and southeast Alaska through Wednesday
night. The surface ridge will push the rain out and also assist in
moving clouds out overnight too. Patchy fog may form in the areas
that manage lower temperatures quickly to the dew point as the
clearing passes by.
The next low-pressure system is tracking northward along the
British Columbia Coastal region on Thursday. Expect to see the
rain and wind spread into the southern panhandle Thursday evening
and then work northward to the northern panhandle by morning.
Another slow will lift into the southeast gulf Friday and then
move north-northeast along the panhandle to the Northeastern Gulf
Saturday night. The second system's rain will track north will
continue to stay with light rain for the area for the rest of the
week.
Aloft a trough at 500 Mb over the Eastern Gulf will morph with an
added energy impulse, to a closed low over the gulf by the
weekend. This position will continue to move shortwaves and
precipitation into Southeast Alaska.
Through the next couple of days, there will be some locally
breezy conditions. Expecting gust to near 40 mph for communities
along Clarence Strait Thursday, these gusts may continue into
Thursday evening. The Juneau region is expecting to deal with a
minor mountain wave event ( Taku ) for the downtown area on
Thursday afternoon. Winds gust up to 40 mph possible. Then Lynn
Canal area Thursday afternoon to Thursday night will increase up
to 30 kt out of the north.
.LONG TERM.../Friday through Wednesday as of 10 PM Tuesday/...An
area of low pressure is expected to move into the gulf on Friday.
This low would bring elevated winds along the coast and in the
inner channels as it passes by. Coastal winds could get up to 40
kts and inner channel winds could get up to 20 to 25 kts. Rain
looks to move over the panhandle from south to north.
The weekend looks drier for the north with some chances for rain
in the south. As Friday’s low moves west, the pattern over the
panhandle looks like a general offshore pattern over the northern
half with general onshore flow for the south. So, have left
chances for rain in the forecast for the south while the north
would be drier.
If the offshore flow sticks around for at least the start of next
week, then we may see some cold, below normal temps for early
November for some. Skies could be mostly sunny to partly cloudy
but lows would dip into the teens to 20s in the north, 30s in the
south. Highs would be in the 20s to 30s in the north, 30s to low
40s in the south.
