.SHORT TERM...Cold, dry, windy conditions continue mid week
before pattern change as a low/front moves in for the end of the
week. Satellite imagery this afternoon showing the increasing
outflow winds between the building high pressure over the Yukon
and lower pressure over the AK gulf. Northerly winds over the
inner channels have picked up to gale force already with strongest
winds over Lynn Canal and out of Taku inlet so far. Monitoring
mountain wave potential for downtown Juneau closely. So far model
guidance has been shifting with latest runs having favorable
potential due to col at 500 mb moving over from 06z to about 12z
Tuesday evening setting up the missing critical level component.
However holding off on getting gusts much higher than 50 mph as
guidance also had winds higher earlier in the day and those have
been bit slower to pick up. Cold temperatures have also been the
word due arctic air moving in from the Yukon/BC and clear skies,
resulting in radiational cooling. Temps expected to drop into the
teens and low 20s with below zero for northern locations and
higher elevations. Temps aloft at 850 mb drop down to -20C by
Wednesday morning. Coldest areas are in wind sheltered locations
with warmer locations where stronger winds and mixing occur.

The strong outflow winds will diminish Wednesday night into
Thursday as the Yukon high weakens and expect some increase in
temps. For Thursday night into Friday pattern shifts with a low
moving into the NE AK gulf with associated gale force front
reaching the coastal waters. Precipitation from the front looks to
stay more offshore and along the coast for Thursday night.

No changes in overall synoptic pattern from previous forecast with
models in good agreement. Mostly local changes to winds and
temps. Forecast confidence is above average for overall weather
pattern with still some questions on local impacts.

.LONG TERM.../Thursday through Monday/ As of 10pm Monday. The
"cold air outbreak" is still expected to reach it's peak mid-
week. So the second half of the work week should see temperatures
take a turn to the warmer side. By Friday and the weekend, high
temperatures return to the 20s and 30s. The far southern parts of
the panhandle could reach near 40 while the far northern parts
may still be stuck in the teens to 20s for highs.

The expected stronger northerly winds are still in the forecast
so freezing spray is still in forecast for early portions of the
long range forecast.

A Yukon high pressure will shift down into northern B.C.
Thursday. This will shift the best outflow to be more out of the
eastern interior passes, including potential for Taku winds but
the potential is low. Meanwhile, a low pressure system will move
into the northern gulf from the west Thursday night, increasing
the E-W pressure gradient. A front extending outward from the low
creates the potential for snow along the outer coast as the low
tracks slowly SE Friday and Saturday. Latest models, and their
previous runs, have had more differences with the position and
subsequent track of this low, so have only made minor changes to
this portion of the forecast. But more often than not, the high
pressure and dry air already in place wins out, limiting how far
inland the snow can reach - and may end up just causing increased
clouds. Once the low shifts SE, the cold/dry/northerly pattern
continues.
