.SHORT TERM...The panhandle has gotten one more day under the
ridge of high pressure. Many areas got a good taste of sunshine,
even Juneau where some areas still managed to hold onto the
persistent Halloween fog into the morning hours today. Expect
clouds to fill in over the area in a south to north fashion
beginning this evening and continuing into Tuesday as a weak low
moves into the eastern Gulf. The pressure gradient around this low
appears to be impressive enough to warrant gales in the coastal
and open Gulf zones late tonight through Tuesday, but as of now,
the low center stays far enough out to sea that the inner channels
will only see small craft criteria winds, and mainly in those that
have ocean entrances. Fog may become an issue again tonight,
particularly for locations in the northern half of the forecast
area where cloud cover will be late to close in before the clouds
move in. Precipitation chances increase through the day Tuesday
region wide, but greatest chances exist in the southern panhandle
and along coastal areas. Tuesday night, a secondary low/trough
moves into the Gulf behind the previous low with the exception
that this feature takes aim directly on SEAK. This low is actually
expected to become washed out in the overall flow as it moves over
land. This will cause the pressure gradient to loosen further and
any remaining gales will decrease below criteria. Rain chances
will increase though for nearly all locations Tuesday night into
Wednesday though. While some locations could potentially see
amounts over an inch, totals generally within the half to one inch
range appear to be the norm through the end of the forecast
period. As we close in on the end of the short term, rain chances
begin to diminish for southern areas as early as Wednesday
afternoon as flow turns offshore. This lull in precip will
continue to spread north and east and then by the waning hours of
the forecast PoPs will only be warranting for slight chances for
precip.

.LONG TERM.../Wednesday through Monday as of 10 PM Sunday/...The
long term portion of the forecast begins with a wet Wednesday.

A passing trough at the 500mb layer with associated surface low
pressure will give SE AK passing rain on Wednesday. As of now,
24hr QPF totals between the EURO and GFS ensembles give around 0.5
to 1 inch.

Thursday could play out to be a drier day due to a quick moving
ridge of high pressure. Still left some PoPs in due to ENS
averages having some QPF amounts. This could be because of the
uncertainty in the arrival of the next round of systems.

In fact, Friday and the weekend has some very high uncertainty in
the exact details but next weekend could play out active. The
global deterministic models have a couple passing storm systems
next weekend and the surface low pressure ENS member-wise
minimums show there is potential for a couple rounds of storm
systems as well. But strength and timing and tracks of the these
lows are nowhere near settled. So the ENS averages just keep a
steady area of low pressure sitting and spinning in the gulf. So
next weekend will need to be monitored closely.

There isn’t much for snow potential in the long term forecast.
850 mb temperatures really don’t get far below 0C until next
Saturday.

Highs and lows will slowly cool down during the long term but
overall, temperatures look to say at or above normal until next
weekend.
