.SHORT TERM...Allow me to spin you a tale of mystery and suspense.
One in which all that surrounds you, that you move through, and
even inhale can change you and what you may do a minute from now
or a week from now. I of course am speaking of the dreaded and
sometimes incredibly unpredictable "Atmospheric Dynamics"! Case
in point, leading up to this day we had been lured into the belief
that we would all be in store for a very pleasant day, and while
this did come to fruition for many locales, one place refused to
participate and remains mired in a deep mist to this moment. That
place... Juneau. Ah, how the temptation of ideal conditions turned
into a dirty trick as a dense fog underneath a very stubborn
capping inversion has subjugated the residents of this poor city
to ghostly conditions that not only have made traveling around
town a scary proposition, but has also cut us off from the outside
world as air travel has been shut down since the pre- sunlight
hours. There is hope that perhaps this fog may lift before long,
but optimism runs low in these dark times. Soon, monsters and
ghouls (and probably superheroes and princesses and ect...) will
emerge from their hiding places and if the mist prevails they may
be upon you before you even realize it, so if the desire to drive
has overcome you, your best protection is to use your headlights
and to move slowly.

In the larger scope of this narrative, all seems well at the
moment outside of Juneau, but don't be fooled. A stalled front in
the Gulf stands like a tormenting sentry, creating gusty winds
which will make any mariner with a weak stomach sick. High
pressure to our west is only lulling most of the denizens of
southeast Alaska into thinking that there is nothing threatening
on the horizon, but it is there. That is what it wants, for you to
believe that the tranquil conditions that many of you enjoyed
today and nay, some of you will see again tomorrow will be long
lasting, but it will not be so. For as the sun goes down on
Monday, a low pressure system will be churning like a bubbling
cauldron into the Gulf from the south. As the low overtakes the
region Tuesday into Tuesday night all a shroud of clouds will blot
out the scintillating magnificence of the sun that many of us had
become accustomed to, returning us to the dull, gray (and
eventually also wet) existence that typifies our existence in this
part of the world.

.LONG TERM.../Tuesday through Sunday as of 10 PM Saturday/...The
long term portion of the forecast begins with a change in the
weather pattern from a drier to wetter pattern.

Starting with the weakening ridge of high pressure being replaced
with a trough. The timing of these ridge breakdowns are usually
not handled well by the models and last longer than expected. But
if current timing holds true, the ridge will break down Tuesday,
allowing for rain to slowly move in. The rain looks to come in
from the south from a pair of low pressure systems. This set up
would give SE AK a wet Wednesday.

Afterwards, a general area of low pressure will sit over the
gulf, giving the panhandle a chance at showers Thursday into
Friday.

Friday and the weekend could bring some potential active weather.
The individual runs in the models bring strong areas of low
pressure into the gulf. However, because these are 7-9 days out,
the uncertainty is high. Between the deterministic runs and the
member-wise minimums in the ensembles, the strength of the surface
low could be down to near 960 mb but the spread of timing and
travel path is very wide. So next weekend will be monitored over
the coming days.

There isn’t much for snow potential in this long term forecast.
850 mb temperatures really don't get too far below 0C so for now,
rain is likely if any precip is expected.

Highs and lows will slowly cool down during the long term. The
long term forecast starts with highs in the 40s to low 50s and
lows in the 30s to low 40s. But by next weekend, highs average in
the mid 40s with lows in the low to mid 30s.
