Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Weakly unstable air has contributed to some light
rain showers with some mixed precipitation with wet snow flakes
sneaking in at times over the course of the day. A ridge oriented
across the Panhandle supports light southerly breezes across land
areas and a bit stiffer winds of 10 to 20 knots through the Inner
Channels. However, these winds have been a cake walk compared to
Monday's strong winds across the region. One of two exceptions
has been Upper Lynn Canal where tighter gradients have resulted in
southerly gusts up to 40 mph in Skagway and small craft 25-kt
southerlies through northern Lynn Canal. The other exception is
the Inner Channel gateways to the Pacific where 30 kt westerlies
race past Capes Spencer and Decision. These winds should subside
overnight as the upper trough in western Canada continues eastward.

With 850 mb temperatures between -6 and -7 C tonight and surfaces
temperatures invariably falling with increasing breaks in the
clouds, we continue the trend of mixed precipitation showers into
this evening with diminishing snow showers late. With such spotty
nature of showers, we expect little if any snow accumulations by
Wednesday morning. The building ridge will impact the southern
Inner Channels the most with increasing subsidence such that skies
clear more, showers end the earlier, and winds ease quicker.
Therefore, the probability that fog develops across the south is
high with moderate confidence of fog across the central Panhandle
including Juneau.

Later Wednesday, a weak system denting the ridge to the west
tracks east to Southeast Alaska. This extends the duration of
mixed rain and snow showers into Wednesday for the northern and
central Panhandle, but a stronger mean ridge across the southern
Panhandle should recast skies with clouds but keep the weather
dry. This system quickly loses strength as it progresses across
the Panhandle and support for showers diminishes Wednesday night
as a result, preparing our region for what looks to be the driest
day of 2021 so far--Thursday. Skies begin to clear from west to
east, but we have to temper the hopes of sun with an increasingly
real threat of morning fog that could persist into the afternoon.
Be mindful that fog could present more significant impacts
regionwide on Thursday. We extended fog to 21Z Thursday, but will
consider extending it all day in some areas later.

Forecast confidence is generally good. Temperatures were cooled
for the next couple of days to account for the cooler air mass as
well as increasing nighttime radiation loss. We also allowed for
more mixed precipitation at much higher temperatures (upper 30s)
to account for the cooler atmospheric column supporting the mixed
preciptiation despite such mild surface temperatures at times. The
most significant wind edits consisted of matching the forecast
with present trends this evening.

.LONG TERM.../Friday through Tuesday as of 10 pm Monday/ The
upper level pattern in the extended range continues to herald
changes to the ongoing pattern. Most notably, more frequent
ridging across the Gulf of Alaska and the Panhandle will bring
chances for drier weather back to the area. Much of Friday in
particular will likely see clearing skies and numerous breaks in
the clouds as synoptic scale flow moves away from the onshore
regime which has helped bring precip to the region.

Unfortunately, this initial ridge will be pushed out as upper
level trough advances across the gulf, heralding the return of
precipitation by Friday night into Saturday. It continues to look
like the accompanying system will be weaker than some of the more
recent systems which have impacted the area. The rain will not
last and ensembles remain in fair agreement that this system will
have departed by the latter half of Sunday. Behind it, there are
some indications that pressure gradient forces driven by a
rebuilding ridge over the area could create an outflow event, but
confidence remains low. Should such an outflow event occur, it
would usher in cooler temperatures across much of the area.
Ensembles also continue to hint at a broad trough dipping into the
area for the latter half of the week, but this far out it remains
difficult to discern specifics.
