A ridge of high pressure will build over the inner channels
Friday. A developing low pressure system and gale force front 
moves across the gulf from the west through Friday evening. The 
front then tracks over the panhandle late Friday night. The low 
will slowly weaken over the NE gulf Saturday and shift south 
through Sunday.

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...The low approaches the Southeast Alaska and stalls
west of Prince of Wales Island with a trough north along coastal
waters. That will stay stalled into Thursday. Shower activity
will continue to persist and slowly weaken into Friday as a ridge
moves across the the Gulf of Alaska for the end of the week.

It still looks as if isolated showers will be continuing early
Friday, however a ridge ahead of the next weather system headed to
the panhandle Friday night and into Saturday will try to suppress
shower activity. At the 60 hour forecast mark, the model
solutions from early this morning and the mid morning runs that
I've seem are starting align better. Rain should start moving into
the panhandle Friday evening and the front should be through SEAK
by midday Friday although the low will still be in the northeast
gulf keeping onshore flow and showers for the main panhandle on
Saturday.

Expect to see a band of moderate heavy rain associated with front.
Overall the Friday night to Saturday rain totals are in the 1 to
2 inch bracket right now. Think most that will likely fall in a
roughly 12 hour window. As a result this burst of rain will raise
river and stream levels. Not anticipating flooding issues at this
time.

Wind-wise some small craft winds and seas for the outer coastal
areas, followed by a break. Friday to Friday night outer coastal
winds up to 35-40 kt gale force winds and the inner channels in
the favored channels of 25 to 30 kt.

.LONG TERM.../Friday through Tuesday as of 10PM Tuesday/...We
start off the long-term forecast period with a dirty, flattening
ridge poised over the Gulf and Panhandle. This will bring onshore
flow to the area and cause topographically enhanced scattered
convective shower activity over southeast Alaska for Friday. For
late Friday night through early Sunday morning, a low pressure
system will track toward the Panhandle from the southwest. Just
before it reaches the central Panhandle, it will dip
southeastward. This system will bring good chances for appreciable
rainfall over the majority of the area. Also, it brings a good
long central Pacific fetch of deep moisture. Model forecast IVT
values are fairly decent at around 700 for the Saturday system. Up
to around Gale force winds are possible in the Gulf just off the
central and southern outer coast areas with winds of up to around
30 knots possible over the rest of the Gulf waters, except over
the extreme northeast Gulf waters for Saturday. Winds of 15 knots
or more are possible as the pressure gradient increases over the
Panhandle as the low approaches. Stronger winds are possible near
the ocean entrances of the inner channels as the low nears the
outer coast. The marine wind forecast will likely be nudged upward
for Friday night/Saturday as we become more confident in the low
track, but the low won't be around long as it will be quick
moving.

For Sunday afternoon through the end of the long-term forecast
period, a ridge builds in over the eastern Gulf and Panhandle,
bringing relatively nicer weather to the area with low chances
for isolated showers and mainly broken to scattered cloud cover.
The pressure pattern will progressively relax through the rest of
the period, bringing lighter winds. Therefore, some fog will be
possible over the Panhandle, due to the decreased clouds, lighter
winds, and saturated area soils from the precipitation from the
previous low pressure system.

Forecast models were in good agreement. Therefore, forecast
confidence is generally average to above average for the long-term
forecast period. A GFS/NAM/CMC/ECMWF blend was used until the NAM
ran out. The blend was phased to WPC toward the end of the
period.
