Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Southeast Alaska has seen a warm and sunny Sunday.
A ridge axis is located over the eastern gulf allowing for skies
to clear and temperatures to warm. A surface low develops south
of the Aleutians and shifts east through Monday. As it does so,
the ridge axis pivots east over the panhandle. At time of writing,
temperatures have rose into the mid to upper 60s across the
region, with communities such as Haines, Skagway, and Juneau on
track to hit 70 degrees later this afternoon. Winds are decreasing
through the inner channels as northerly pressure gradients
lighten and a stable air mass develops. Through the remainder of
this evening and into early Monday, light northerly winds dominate
before switching to the south and increasing ahead of our next
weather system Monday night into Tuesday.

Tonight, temperatures cool to the mid to upper 40s with a few
land protected areas dropping into the upper 30s. As we go into
the work week Monday, skies conditions begin sunny but increase
through the afternoon ahead of a weather front that lifts into
the panhandle Monday night. The northern panhandle including
Yakutat will see rainfall first followed by northeast gulf coast
late Monday night before pushing on into the central panhandle
Tuesday. Total rainfall amounts of less than 0.50 inch is expected
by early Tuesday morning. Winds along the outer coast increase
Monday afternoon with frontal passage with strongest winds focused
along the northern gulf coast.

.LONG TERM.../Tuesday through Saturday/...As of 10pm Saturday. By
Tuesday morning a front should be moving onshore with light to
moderate rain in Yakutat and 20-25 kt winds along the northern
outside waters. Rain will spread inland and southward through the
day, making most of Tuesday and Wednesday wet across the
panhandle.

A new wave/low forms along the front on Wednesday and
tracks eastward across the southern gulf. This should shift the
greatest POP to the southern panhandle for Thursday. Behind the
low a ridge of high pressure will be building over the central
gulf. This should help to push most precip off to the SE during
Friday, but may help to cap in some of the moisture/low clouds
too.

The next "break" between systems looks relatively short at the
tail end of the extended forecast, but models have timing
differences in when the next low pressure system moves into the
area. The latest 00z GFS/ECMWF have rain arriving in Yakutat
Saturday afternoon/evening, but their previous runs had the system
arriving 12-24hrs earlier on Friday afternoon/evening. At this
stage in the forecast we have likely POP for both days, but may
need to adjust the timing of the break and push back the onset of
rain.
