Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...A ridge parked across the eastern Gulf of Alaska
today has kept low level onshore stratocumulus across the northern
Panhandle (Kake northward). The same ridge supports drier
northwest flow bringing sunny skies across the southern Panhandle.
With clouds parting overnight across the south, some dense fog
formed in Petersburg, and this held back temperature rises there
to ensure highs do not reach 60 degrees. Elsewhere temperatures
have been on the warm side. Klawock and Ketchikan are nearing 70
degrees at the 2 PM observation. Winds across the south have been
firmly geostrophic at northwest given the ridge. Some stronger
winds up to 20 kt will blow offshore tonight but will persist
through the weekend due to a weather front dropping south.

Meanwhile the front mentioned above sinks to the south tonight
into Saturday. Scattered rain showers spreading into Yakutat and
isolated showers into the northern Panhandle will grow in coverage
through tonight and pull away from the north into the south on
Saturday. Rainfall amounts should be generally a tenth or less.
Southerly winds responding to nearing low pressure to the
northwest have already begun to accelerate through Lynn Canal and
Skagway this afternoon. This will persist a few hours into the
evening before gradients ease and eventually become northerly
by Saturday morning. This should all but complete the transition
of Inner Channel winds to northerly and set the Panhandle up for a
warm sunny day on Sunday as an extra well- deserved treat.

Forecasted temperatures leading through Saturday looked solid. But
as we clear out behind the front Saturday night, we feel
radiational cooling should help lower things even further for a
distinctly early autumn feel in late August. Could someone have an
early season frost Sunday morning? Not likely, but it could happen
in wind sheltered locations in the north. It is something to
watch. Sunday looks amazing...widespread 60s with some locations
pushing 70. We are running out of time on the calendar to
experience days like this. Read about it below.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday through Thursday/...As of 10pm Thursday.
On Sunday the upper level flow will be N-NWLY due to a sharp
ridge of high pressure over the central gulf. At the surface, an
inverted trough over the inner channels and a ridge of high
pressure over the gulf will add to the N-NW winds. The winds will
peak around 10-20kt through the northern inner channels early in
the morning while the southern inner channels should see that
peak during the day along with a tip jet around the southern tip
of Baranof Island and Cape Decision. Overall, this flow pattern
is a dry one and should aid in low POP and few clouds Sunday.
Downsloping and weak/non-existent sea breezes across the north
will make Sunday the warmest day of the week with temps above or
on the high end of guidance at 65-70F.

Monday the ridge will start shifting eastward, allowing the next
low pressure system and assoc front to move into the gulf from
the west. Timing of this front moving across the gulf has been
slowed down by models AND latest runs are looking weaker with it,
making for a longer dry break. Consensus still has rain gradually
spreading into the area late Monday night, making for a wet
Tuesday. Highest POP remains along the outer coast from Yakutat to
Sitka during the day Tuesday. After that models diverge, but keep
systems tracking through with periods of rain.
