.SHORT TERM.../Friday evening through Saturday evening/ The
weather has been winding down across the Panhandle compared to
this time yesterday. Southwesterly flow has taken over producing
scattered to widespread showers across the area. Strong southerly
winds have persisted this afternoon with gusts to 40 mph reported in
Juneau, Sitka, and Skagway while small crafts remain through the
Inner Channels. Expect winds to settle down this evening and tonight
as the gradient becomes more easterly.
The next weather system moves in Saturday morning with a storm
force front pushing into the outer coast. Expect small crafts and
gales to develop in the southern Inner Channels as the front
pushes through with strong winds likely along the outer coast and
around Juneau.
Rainfall associated with this front may be heavy at times with 24
hour amounts around an inch while windward facings slopes may
have higher totals. Persistent flow out of the south will keep
temperatures above average for this time of year, mainly in the
40s. P-type is expected to remain predominately rain for most
areas, except Upper Lynn Canal at times. There is some forecast
uncertainty regarding the snowfall forecast for Haines and Skagway
as northerly flow may keep cooler air at the surface as the front
pushes through. The northerly gradient isn't expected to be strong
and the possibility is there for the southerly push associated
with the front to overcome the weak northerly gradient. Current
forecast keeps temperatures above freezing during the day Saturday
then falling slightly Saturday evening to allow a mix of rain and
snow at sea level. This will need to be monitored closely as a
slightly stronger northerly gradient could keep p-type mainly
snow.
Overall forecast confidence is above average for most areas with
the exception of the snowfall forecast for Haines and Skagway.
Made only minor adjustments to the forecast today.
.LONG TERM.../Sunday through Friday night/...The forecast period
begins Sunday with showers lingering over the region due to the
remnants of a front that passed through Saturday. Conditions
remain cloudy and any breaks in precipitation should be rather
short lived as another robust frontal system begins to make an
approach on the panhandle. Southerly flow around this storm
should keep the temperatures fairly mild for this time of year
before the main band of precip begins to impact the region.
Preliminary looks at IVT and PW anomalies indicate the makings of
a decent atmospheric river headed toward our way by Monday
morning. Models are in good agreement that this feature will
impact western areas of SEAK such as Yakutat first and then swing
southward over the course of the day Monday. This slug of moisture
should swing through the area fairly quickly, but moderate to
heavy rain at times could drive precip totals upwards of two
inches for many locations over the course of the event with
highest totals currently forecast for coastal locations. To
reiterate, temperatures prior to the start of this event should be
warm enough all locations at or near sea level will see only rain.
Higher locations, namely the Haines an Klondike Hwys, could
potentially see some rather substantial amounts of snow. While
still a bit premature to make a snow total forecast with great
confidence, the Klondike Hwy appears to be the most likely
location to be in line for significant snow.
Model discrepancy becomes more pronounced beyond Monday's
system,however, after this storm passes through, showers linger
through Tuesday, and a much weaker system looks to impact parts of
the region on Wednesday, but a bit of a pattern change could be in
store after midweek as ridging builds in over the region. This
could mean that we are in store for some sunny days toward the
end of next week, but with the days still being pretty short,
clear conditions would also send us to some of the coldest nights
of the year thus far.
