Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Through Monday night/ The short term is much
quieter than it has been over the past few days. While the chance
for rain increases tonight, Southeast Alaska will get a well
deserved break from the rain and active weather Sunday and Monday.

Aloft, an upper low tracks SE through the gulf tonight and then
off into BC Sunday. A jet streak rounds the base of the trough as
it passes overhead which helps spawn a weak surface low in the SE
gulf tonight. The surface low moves NE into the Southern Panhandle
early Sunday morning increasing wind speeds and the chance for
rain during that timeframe. Current satellite and radar imagery
clearly depict the wave and an associated stream of clouds and
moisture aimed at the Panhandle. Ensembles show a healthy plume of
moisture associated with this system with IVT values upwards of
500+ kg/m/s. Widespread large scale ascent from the left exit
region of a 90+ kt jet streak combined with an approaching surface
wave and copious amounts of moisture will lead to heavy rainfall
rates across the Southern Panhandle tonight. Highest totals
expected across the south where 0.75 to 1.25 inches could fall
through Sunday morning. Amounts diminish further north away from
the best dynamics with 0.10 to 0.50 expected for the northern half
of the region. A drying trend begins late Sunday morning and lasts
through Tuesday morning as slight ridging builds in the gulf,
giving the Panhandle a well deserved break from the wet weather.

With cold air advection moving in aloft, there is quite a bit of
unstable air over the gulf. Numerous lightning strikes have been
detected associated with a group of showers on the backside of the
approaching system in the central gulf. There is the potential
for continued lightning across the SE Gulf and possibly portions
of the Outer Coast later this evening. Currently think the
lightning activity will diminish before reaching the coast;
however this will need to be monitored closely.

The main wind issues in the short term will be tonight through
Sunday morning as the weak surface low pushes into the Southern
Panhandle. Expect small craft conditions to develop after midnight
across the far SE Gulf and southern Clarence strait. Southerly
winds will increase ahead of the low then quickly shift to the
west Sunday morning as the low passes by. The abrupt wind shift
may cause localized areas of higher erratic wind speeds and
directions across the south. Wind speeds diminish during the day
on Sunday. Persistent westerly flow continues through early next
week; however the pressure gradient over the panhandle remains
weak leading to light winds through the Inner Channels with
afternoon sea breezes for the rest of the period.

Overall confidence remains high through the short term with the
overall pattern. Lower confidence regarding the lightning
potential near the Outer Coast tonight.

.LONG TERM.../ Monday to Saturday, as of 10 PM Friday / Ridging
will slowly rebuild through much of the Monday through Tuesday
timeframe over SE AK. In the lower levels of the troposphere,
this will help cut off the supply of moisture responsible for the
lingering chances of rain in some parts of the area. Consequently,
expect that the panhandle will see an opportunity to dry out,
especially in the southern half of the panhandle. Some offshore
flow will even yield breaks in the cloud cover for the area.
Although a lingering chance of some showers will remain for the
northern half of the panhandle, think that this might still be a
little bit more bold than strictly necessary.

Unfortunately, the return of more pleasant weather will be short-
lived, as a system races up from the Alaska Peninsula into the
area. Though the operational runs are not yet marching in full
lockstep, the ensembles have broadly come into better agreement
that the second half of Tuesday onwards will see the return of
rain to SE Alaska. This system looks likely to have a reasonable
plume of moisture accompanying it, and so anticipate that it will
bring a respectable amount of rain to SE AK. However, while it
does look like the plume of moisture extends through a deep column
of the atmosphere, it does not look like it will stay over one
particular part of the region for an extended period of time at
this point in the forecast. Consequently, flooding concerns are
anticipated to be on the low side, although this will be closely
monitored in the future should conditions change. After Wednesday,
forecast confidence rapidly decreases as diverging solutions make
it increasingly difficult to differentiate any definitive signal
one way or another.

.HYDROLOGY...The Situk near Yakutat crested around 72.4 ft around
3:45am AKDT Friday, which was solidly above minor flood stage of
71.5 ft. It has since fallen to 71 ft, so the Flood Advisory was
cancelled at 4:30am AKDT Saturday. The Taiya near Skagway crested
around 19.2 ft around 2:00pm Friday and remains above moderate
flood stage (17ft) at 17.2 ft, but it is dropping. A Flood Warning
is in effect for the Taiya until 1pm AKDT Saturday. The Mendenhall
Lake near Juneau continues to rise. It currently is at 11.53 ft,
which ties for the 3rd highest crest, and it is still rising at
about 0.02 ft per hour, with a current forecast crest of 11.6. A
Flood Warning is in effect for the Mendenhall Lake until 4pm AKDT
Saturday. Other Juneau area streams have receded substantially,
with Auke Lake, Montana Creek, and Jordan Creek all below flood
stage. The Flood Advisory has been allowed to expire for those
areas Saturday morning.
